Chapter 120
Third person pov
"Maybe this is some sort of trick and he doesn't have it. You know, a mental game Midoriya is playing to psych us out." Tsukauchi suggested as they drove back in UA's general direction. Chad still had no idea what in hot hell was going on. He had a few inklings, but they were being too vague for him to really get the whole picture. Not very cash money of them if he did say so himself. Oh well. Sucks to suck, he guessed.
This entire encounter had him feeling odd. Ever since leaving the prison, Chad had been experiencing this weird gut feeling that seemed to radiate through his entire body and tell him that something was wrong. He didn't know what. He felt off-balance. Like someone had thrown a wrench in the workings of his very being, or something deep like that. He wasn't sure what it was, or how he felt about it just yet. All he knew was that something was throwing his mojo off, and informing him that some bad shit was about to happen.
"I don't think Young Midoriya would do that." Toshinori answered immediately, almost on reflex. Tsukauchi sent his blonde friend a look. Toshinori's expression twisted immediately. Right. That actually was something Young Midoriya would do, wasn't it? If he could lead them all on for so long, it surely wouldn't be that big of a deal to construct an apology and give Chad a piece of hair without the intent of passing his quirk on. So what did they do now? Was there anything they could do?
On one hand, if Chad had it, that wasn't the worst thing ever. At least now it could be passed on again, or wielded by Chad himself should they come to the conclusion that he was a good fit. On the other, if Chad didn't have it, at least it was still with Izuku. In a box where no one could possibly get to it. All For One was down for the count, and the League had taken a hard hit. They'd be out of commission for a while. Really, this entire situation wasn't even that bad. Just mind numbing.
Chad tuned out of the conversation for a moment, looking around. Seriously. Some shit was off and he wasn't digging it. This was not a tune he wanted to get down to. He looked ahead of them, and on both sides. He twisted around and looked out the back window as well. They were going up a long-winded hill, so he had a good view of all the cars behind them. He searched for what was looking for, his heart already sinking. It wasn't hard to spot. At least he knew now that he'd been right. This was without a doubt not good.
"Hey, guys—" Chad started, only to be cut off immediately after.
"He would do that. That's the problem." Tsukauchi sighed. This was one big mess. He knew bringing Chad here had been a mistake, but Toshinori had still insisted. He was a soft man. He still cared for Izuku greatly despite what he'd done. "And what if Chad did get it? How do we tell?"
"Bros—" Chad tried again. Behind them there was a faint screech of tires that both men up front ignored.
"We can't until he shows any signs. I'd probably have to inform him of how it activates so he can try for himself. But that would mean telling him..." Toshinori trailed off, letting out a puff of air. "And if he doesn't have it, I'd have told him for nothing. It's quite the issue."
"Listen, my taco amigos—" Chad chimed a bit more frantically, twisted around in his seat and looking out the back window.
"He's good at keeping secrets. Better than you'd think just talking to him. I think we can trust him." Tsukauchi had to give Chad the benefit of he doubt. He was his son in law, technically. If he and Dabi were actually going to seal the deal. Had they already? Tsukauchi didn't keep up with their lives as closely as he should've. That being said, Rei wasn't either. She was unconcerned about it, instead dedicating her time to making custom bird feeders, Shoto, and helping Mihoko restore her old building.
"HOMIES!" Chad finally screamed at the absolute top of his lungs. Toshinori jumped, and Tsukauchi swerved slightly, his hands tightening on the wheel. Before anyone could scream back an impassioned 'what the fuck is wrong with you', Chad was getting in his last two cents. "We're being followed by those Yakuza fucks with the weird bird masks!"
There was a pause of tense silence before Tsukauchi and Toshinori twisted around fully to look at him.
"We're what?"
And that's about the time the gunshots started.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Chad told Tsukauchi to drive and said not to worry, he'd handle it.
Seeing him on action was something else. Before either of them could get a word in, Chad was rolling down the window and climbing out of it like some sort of messed up spider. He easily made his way onto the roof of the car, maintaining his balance as Tsukauchi made a sharp turn and jostled over a speed bump. He wasn't sure where to drive too. The police weren't equipped to deal with the Yakuza, and most heroes were helping with the clean up of Kamino right now.
The Detective didn't want to lead them right to UA, even with all the heroes there. Losing them was their best bet. All Might was still injured from his fight, and Tsukauchi couldn't do much from behind the wheel. Couldn't do much out from behind it, either. This was all Chad.
"Why're they after us? Is it me?" Toshinori squeaked out as the car swerved. He kept waiting for Chad to fall off, but he never saw him tumble. There were still gunshots ringing out from the roof of their vehicle and thumping from his feet, so he was clearly still up there. How did he have so many guns? And moreover, how was he so good at shooting them? It was as amazing as it was terrifying.
"It's Chad. He stole a kid from them." Tsukauchi took another sharp turn, pressing the gas hard. He knew he should've refilled his tank before they left! At this rate they were going to run dry. Which wasn't ideal seeing as they were being shot at. Could this day get any weirder? When Tsukauchi woke up this morning, this was not how he'd been expecting his evening to progress.
"He kidnapped a child?!" Toshinori asked, eyes practically bugging out of his skull at this point. His heart couldn't take much more of this. This man potentially had his quirk, and had kidnapped a child?! From the Yakuza, sure, but kidnapping was kidnapping no matter how you put it! God, what had he gotten himself into. He should have said his peace with Young Midoriya and left it at that for now. Let the boy stew before complying with any of his requests.
"One the Yakuza kidnapped first. She needed help, in Chad's defense." Tsukauchi clenched his teeth as a bullet crashed through his car's left side mirror. His insurance company was going to be less than happy. How many times had he damaged his car this year at this point? How many more times would he? "But yes, he just picked her up off the sidewalk and drove away."
"Oh, god." Toshinori groaned, dragging a hand down his pale face. On the roof Chad let out an alarmed shout that sounded an awful lot like the words 'rocket launcher', which was not what Tsukauchi wanted to be hearing at the moment. There were several more gunshots from above their vehicle, these ones faster than the last. Tsukauchi glanced at his gas meter. With the turns he'd been taking and the pressure he'd been giving his gas pedal, they weren't doing so hot.
He continued nonetheless, dodging through traffic and swerving when needed. They were going away from UA. He was trying to pass places pros and police officers may be patrolling. Hopefully they'd notice the car chase and recognize either Chad on the roof, or the fact that it was a police car. Doubtful, but it was definitely worth a shot.
There was this faint whooshing sound. Like air decompressing, followed by something whizzing through the air. It all took less than a second. Tsukauchi was looking in his rear view window. He spotted the missile coming towards them the same time Toshinori seemed to. Chad let out a loud curse. Before the missile could tear through the metal of the car, a bullet hit it hard and sent it ricocheting into the asphalt with a deafening boom that seemed to shake the ground. That missile was military grade without a doubt. How had they gotten their hands on something like that?
Before Tsukauchi could even let a curse out, their car was sent flying through the air. And his world went dark.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tsukauchi woke up not even ten minutes later to screaming, and to Chad's face hovering about a foot above his.
"Wake up, bro." Chad said in a hushed tone. The air was full of smoke, making it hard to see. Toshinori peered over the younger man's shoulder and down at his detective friend, looking a bit disheveled, but alright over all. Tsukauchi groaned. His lungs felt like they'd shrunk in size, and his left arm was on fire. He allowed himself to be ushered into an upright position, his head spinning and his vision blurred. He blinked a few times to try and adjust. All that did was make his eyes sting more.
"Are you alright, Naomasa?" Toshinori questioned, gazing down at him with obvious concern. There was shouting from somewhere close. A quick look around, even disoriented, told Tsukauchi that their car had managed to tumble it's way into a clothing store. He must've been thrown from the car somehow, seeing as he couldn't see it and wasn't in it. That, or Chad had dragged him out. The latter wouldn't surprise him. How had Chad even survived that, being on top of the car? He was coated in ash and had shards of broken glass in his hair.
"I'm... I'm alright." Tsukauchi managed to cough out. He straightened himself slightly. His body ached in protest, but it wasn't impossible to move. It was a good sign. "The car... are you both okay?"
"I'm quite alright." Toshinori noted, crouched down slightly. Why was he speaking so lowly? Were the Yakuza still in pursuit? "Young Chad pulled me from the car and made sure I was alright. He pulled you out too. Though, his foot..."
"Shit's wrecked." Chad grimaced, reaching down to help him. "Up, up, my bro-slice. Those Yakuza fucks are on their way. They're going to be looking for us when they realize our sorry asses aren't in the car."
"Where is the car?" Tsukauchi rubbed at his forehead. It felt like he'd just been hit in the head with a sledgehammer. He knew it would've been worse had Chad not shot the rocket before it could make impact. They probably all would've died. Nonetheless, this was still bad. At least he didn't have to worry about refilling the gas tank now.
"Next door." Chad said, helping to pull him up. "Woulda gone further but again, my foot peaced out and shit's fucked. Car's on fire, hence the smoke. A separate car crashed through the front of this baller box if you catch my drift. I just pulled you through the window. Bad bitch style."
"The explosion and our car rolling caused a lot of other cars to lose control." Toshinori verified. He glanced away, looking remorseful. He'd been conscious for the entirety of the crash, and it hadn't been pretty. "I'm afraid it's... not good."
"That's what I said." Chad said vaguely, yanking something off a nearby rack of clothing. It was a hideous dress. He shoved it into Tsukauchi's hands as though the detective would know what to do with it. The man blinked at it. At what point did this situation warrant him to hold a dress? Was he missing something? "Lose the Sherlock get up and put that on. Disguises are gonna be the only way to lose these fucks at this point. Unless we can find a car, but it'll be hard to find the time. Plus y'all don't break laws and shit which makes it harder."
Tsukauchi nodded slowly, still blinking and trying to process. Toshinori winced as Chad looked him up at down. His arm was still in its cast, and his leg was bleeding. Getting him into a disguise was going to be hard. Getting him into one fast was going to be impossible. The detective swallowed heavily as the reality of the situation set in. Their car was totalled. Toshinori was injured, and Chad— the most capable one here— was too. Tsukauchi was the only one who could actually walk and get away.
Tsukauchi hurriedly shed his singed jacket at that note, not seeing any reason to argue. Had he been on fire? If he had, Chad had put it out. How'd he pulled them from one store to the other with his foot like that? Maybe it hadn't been as bad, but had gotten worse when he helped them. Tsukauchi felt his chest tighten. Chad could've left them behind, but he hadn't. And now he was immobilized. Heroes were probably on their way, but they wouldn't be here in time. He knew response times, and they weren't going to make it.
The sound of angry and demanding voices sounded outside just as Tsukauchi got the dress on, feeling ridiculous. Chad slapped a wig crookedly into his head. The detective gave him an alarmed look.
"Don't worry, bro." Chad gave a grin, as though things were fine, his sunglasses glinting. Tsukauchi saw a knife slip into his hand from out of the sleeve of his jacked up hoodie. "I've got this. Go out the back, and take your homebody with you. I'll be fine."
"What? You're hurt!" Toshinori looked flabbergasted by the idea of leaving Chad behind. Tsukauchi swallowed heavily.
"Chad, we can't leave you when you're hurt." Tsukauchi said gently, adjusting the wig on his head so it looked a bit more natural. He was glad his hair was short enough to pull it off. He felt like an idiot standing here in a dress, pants, and a wig, but he was too spooked to care.
Chad looked over the tops of his cracked sunglasses, his golden eyes steely. Tsukauchi felt his entire body tense at the intent present in his gaze. His shoulders tightened, and he suddenly felt like he was being held under a microscope. Seeing someone like Chad so painfully serious sent a shiver down his spine, and he reminded himself that this man had just stood atop a moving car, shooting at people who were shooting back at him, and then managed to shoot a rocket out of the air. And then he'd dragged them from a burning car with a broken foot.
"Listen. This is my shit, and you just happened to step in it. So scrape it off your shoe and make through the back door. They want my ass, not yours." Chad said, his voice leaving no room for arguement. He then straightened, turning his head back towards the entrance of the store. It was smoky, but the approaching silhouettes of two figures could be clearly made out. He glanced back at Tsukauchi. "Go. And tell someone my ass is grass. And for the love of fucking god, watch Eri."
And then he was gone, twirling his knife in his hand as shifted quietly and slowly through the smoke, favoring one leg heavily. Tsukauchi still felt dizzy, turning towards Toshinori. The man have a wry smile.
"I can stand, but I can't walk either." He admitted, looking down at his bleeding leg. Tsukauchi bit the inside of his cheek. "I'll stay with him. I may be crippled, but I know a thing or two. Get to UA. Tell the heroes what happened."
Tsukauchi felt oddly like crying. But he didn't. Instead, he clenched his fists, nodded his head, and raced towards the back of the store. He couldn't help Chad fight, and he couldn't save Toshinori, but he could go get help. So that's what he'd do.
