Chapter 114
Third person pov
Where do villains come from? Sitting here in Mihoko's living room wedged between her dad and Shoto, Lillian found that she didn't really know. It wasn't something she'd ever thought about before now. Not in depth, anyway. She sort of wished she had now. Despite feeling utterly exhausted, she couldn't get herself asleep. She felt nervous and on edge even though she knew well and good that she was safe. It had been a fight to get her out of the hospital, and an even bigger one to try prying Bakugo away from her. Mitsuki stopped trying after Katsuki started to cry. It had been a breaking point for her, and now he was in the kitchen cooking with Mihoko to try and take his mind off things.
Taking eyes off Lillian had been harder for Katsuki than he'd thought it would be. Even now, he kept popping his head around the corner to look at the back of her head, just to reassure himself that she was still there. It was dumb of him. He felt weak and out of control, but there was nothing he could do to calm himself down. Looking at her and seeing that she was physically there, okay and safe, was the only thing that satisfied the fear that would creep up in him. He hadn't felt like this yesterday. He could recall easily not feeling this way. So why was it so severe now? Why was he... why was he so fucked up?
Lillian's dad had gone through half a bottle of eyedrops, and was now sitting beside her with his head tilted back and a wet washcloth set over his eyes. Lillian didn't really understand who that main villain was or where he'd even come from, but she was far from an idiot. She could deduce that he had to be All Might's rival-- the head villain, or something like that. He'd displayed more than one quirk. How had her dad canceled that many at once? It was a miracle he could still see. Just thinking about what could've happened to him had his quirk become too overwhelmed in that moment made her stomach turn.
The news played softly in the background, reporting quietly on All Might's new form. Shoto's left hand gripped hers tightly as he stared at the screen. He was more alert than anyone had expected him to be. Hawks had talked to him. Nobody was sure what he'd said to the teen to make him calm down, and they weren't about to ask. It had worked, and Lillian was grateful. She wasn't sure she could stand to watch him break down again. The devastation that had rolled off him in waves back on the battlefield had shattered her heart even further. Even now the air felt heavy.
"Dad?" Lillian asked quietly. Her dad shifted, surprised. Lillian hoped he didn't mind. It was around ten in the morning now-- it was surreal to recognize how much time had passed-- and Lillian had come to several realizations in the past few hours. One of them was that she didn't have time to dawdle. She could die any day. Her dad could too. It had taken less than a second for Awase to crumble out there. There was no time to waste on fretting over whether or not she should call him 'dad'. He was her father, and she loved him with everything in her. She didn't want to risk beating around the bush anymore. If she suddenly dropped dead tomorrow, she wanted to do it with as few regrets as possible. "What happens now?"
Aizawa took in a slow and deep breath. Lillian's question was a loaded one, and he wasn't sure he had a good answer. He himself had no idea what was going to happen next. For a moment, he didn't say anything. He could feel Lillian's eyes on him. Todoroki was probably waiting too. He wanted to say something that would comfort them, but he knew they didn't need falsities right now.
"....The world just lost its Symbol of Peace. Its trust in UA, a school they rely on to create the next generation of heroes, is compromised." He'd never been one to soften the blow. He pulled the washcloth from his face, looking to his daughter. She was gazing at him intently, and Shoto was doing the same. They looked so young. Sitting there so expectantly was just another reminder that they were children. It made Shota's heart stutter and his stomach turn. "The new heroes rankings will drop within the next few days. Hawks is up next in line, so he'll have to step up to bat. We lost Endeavor-- rightfully so, but it still reflected on Hero society-- and now we've lost All Might. All in the span of a few months. Villains are going to see that as an opening. So I think... things will get harder, now. And it's going to depend on how us Heroes react."
Lillian accepted the answer with a nod, looking to Shoto. He looked grim, but he nodded as well. They knew Mr. Aizawa was right. The top two pros were out of commission. One was brought down ultimately by a villain, the other was a child abuser, and one of UA's hero course students had shot and killed one of their peers on live television. Things weren't looking good. Villains were worming their ways into every crack and crevice it seemed. They were only going to become more active now. All Might wasn't around to keep the peace.
On the TV, a replay of the blonde man himself pointed right at the camera. He was bandaged to high heaven, having been whisked away by some of the healers on the scene. Lillian was still shocked to find it was her who'd essentially caused the giant hoard of people to come face All For One. The main group had been made up of her fans, and then more people had come in to add to the mass. It was flattering, and it gave her hope. If they could come together and stand up in such a dark and dangerous time, maybe they could survive the calamity to come in the days to follow.
"You're next." All Might proclaimed. Lillian's chest constricted in on itself for a moment, and she swallowed thickly. It was a simple phrase and it was vague enough that it could be meant for anyone. Villains, future heroes, civilians— it covered all the bases heavily, leaving her feeling almost enlightened in a sense. She was next. They all were. With All Might essentially gone, there was no choice but to step up.
"Breakfast is fucking ready!" Bakugo called from the kitchen, drawing her from her train of thought. She blinked, shifting slightly and looking towards Shoto. He also seemed to be dwelling on All Might's words, staring at the screen even as it switched to something else on the events of last night. There was a lot being placed upon them, and Lillian wasn't sure how she was supposed to feel anymore. She wanted to stand up proud and tall, because she had survived. But Awase hadn't. In a way, Izuku hadn't either. Their number one hero had fallen, and everything just felt... broken.
"Let's go eat." Shoto spoke, his voice quiet. There was a new clarity in his eyes. All Might's words had reached something in him. Lillian's eyes stung with fresh tears as she looked at her friend. She'd never seen him look so impossibly tired before. Even with how absolutely exhausted he appeared, the dazed look that had previously clouded his face was wiped off. Before, he'd seemed almost catatonic. But Shoto was strong. Lillian knew he was, and she would do her best to support him. She knew he'd do the same for her. "We're going to need our energy."
"You're right." Lillian breathed, shaking her head. They were fine. They'd be okay. They just had to get things settled again and everyone would be alright. "Sitting here crying isn't going to fix anything. We should try to get out a little. Maybe we could go visit Chad, or Hitoshi."
Aizawa felt moderately stunned as the two teens pushed up off the couch, talking about all the things they could go out and do today. He didn't know what to say. Lillian had almost just died, and though he wasn't super aware of Shoto and Izuku's relationship, it had been rather clear that they were close. His students were rather flexible. They'd all bounded back from the USJ incident rather quickly, and even now he was getting status updates on them being relatively fine, even in the wake of Izuku's betrayal. But Lillian and Shoto? The ones who'd been on the front lines? They were talking about getting ice cream, for fucks sake. Did they not realize they were allowed to stay in? To be depressed over this all?
"You... You're allowed to mourn." Aizawa said, and they turned to look at him. He cleared his throat. "I mean, you're children. It's not rational to assume you'd be over it that fast."
Lillian gave him an odd look, and Shoto snorted like he'd made a joke.
"We're never going to be over it." Lillian shrugged, as though stating a simple fact. "B-But... It already happened. And I don't like being sad."
"She's right. I... I don't know how to feel, but I cried. I will continue to be sad for a while, I think. But I think while it's healthy to mourn our losses, it's also good to celebrate and appreciate what we saved." Shoto murmured, his voice so quiet Aizawa almost didn't catch it. He looked at Lillian, and actually managed to smile a little. "Lillian is alive. I can't discount that."
Lillian smiled back at him. Aizawa was pretty sure that was the exact moment he knew that even though it might take a while, his daughter was going to be just fine.

"So what're we doing?" Kaminari questioned as Chad tore through traffic, weaving through honking cars in a way that seemed almost professional. He'd definitely done this before. Kaminari was more than a little exhilarated by this all. He felt less despondent, that's for sure. He was positive his parents were freaking out right now. Even with the text he'd shot them, he doubted they were even slightly okay with him running off. He had almost just died, after all.
"Going to UA." Chad cracked his neck as he spun the wheel. Dabi was muttering about speeding from the passenger's seat. He was a terrifying dude in general, but Kaminari was beginning to realize he was actually just the mom of the group, that was all. "I've been talking to that rat guy that's the principal and I guess he's impressed with my gun shit, because he wants to talk to me about being on campus more. Something about dorm rooms and shit. I just finished another semester at college and I'm not even sure I'm going to sign up for anymore, you know? I may do that shit."
"We're getting dorms?" Kaminari asked, excited. Dabi's head whipped in Chad's direction, his blue eyes wide and accusing. Chad might be moving onto UA's property?! What the fuck did that mean for Dabi and Eri? The idea of actually facing Shoto again scared Dabi. They'd brushed past one another, but they hadn't actually talked. Dabi had been too afraid to reconnect with his family. He knew at least Detective Tsukauchi knew who he was-- no thanks to Chad, of course. That meant his mom probably knew too... did his siblings?
"Hell yeah you are, Sparky." Chad flipped on his blinker despite the fact that he was running a red light in an intersection. "Dabi, honey, I can hear your thoughts from here. He said I could bring any family I had!"
Dabi immediately relaxed at that. That meant a free pass for he and Eri both. Dabi didn't really want to live on campus, but he would. Shit, the things he did for this man. He really was whipped. At least Eri would be safer. The Yakuza was starting to get irritated. They'd become a lot more violent in their attempts to get the girl back, and All Might's fall was only going to make that worse. Despite how careful Chad always was when they went home, it was only a matter of time before they finally found the apartment. Even if Chad had it under Hawks' name, that didn't mean much.
"Wait." Dabi's thoughts came to a halt. "Then the Nomu-"
Chad's grin widened, and Dabi's heart dropped. Did they know that a majority of Chad's supposed 'family' was made up of Nomu? AKA, the very thing they'd had to fight this last night? The whole USJ attack? Nezu was a genius, but Chad was a slippery man. While Nezu definitely knew about Vlad by now, it was doubtful he was aware of the three latest additions. Which was... concerning. If Chad rolled up with four Nomu, a child, and a scarred man most thought to be a villain, what would they say? Their security was obviously going to be tight. Surely they wouldn't take too kindly to a bunch of Nomu stampeding onto campus.
"We get to live with Lillian?!" Eri gasped out exuberantly the moment she realized just what this implied. "A-And Neito, and Shoto, and Hitoshi?!"
"That's right, squirt! Isn't that super duper groovy?" Chad looked at the girl in the rear view mirror. Kaminari grinned at Eri as well. He didn't really know who she was, but she was adorable and practically vibrating due to how happy she was. Kaminari couldn't blame her. He had nothing against his own family, but living with them could... well, they were a complicated bunch who didn't exactly think he had the ability to become a hero when to came down to it. 1-A felt more like family than they did at times.
"Yeah, it'll definitely be awesome!" Kaminari agreed in an animated fashion, golden eyes wide. "But... what did you say about Nomu?"
Dabi groaned, and Chad let out a ferocious cackle. Kaminari had several questions. He just wasn't sure he wanted the answers to them.

Aizawa was hesitant to leave Lillian at Mihoko's despite knowing she'd be safe. He and All Might wanted to present the idea of dorms forth as soon as possible. The League was still going to be regrouping, but nobody was willing to risk much of anything at this point. Later that evening, he dropped Shoto and Lillian off at the hospital so they could hang out with Neito and Hitoshi. Mic was with them, and Hawks was in the building as well. Both were small comforts as All Might shuffled out to the car, one arm in a cast and bandages spiralling their way around most other visible parts of his body, excluding his face.
"Aizawa." He said politely as he opened the passenger side door. He sounded dead tired, and far too depressed for a man normally as optimistic as himself. "Thank you for agreeing to drive me. I'm not sure I'd have been able to come along otherwise."
"It's no problem." Aizawa said, prying his eyes away from the hospital his daughter had just vanished into. He properly took the previous number-one's appearance in with a grimace he didn't bother to hide. "You look like shit."
Toshinori let out a small, broken laugh. He felt like it too. He wasn't sure where he'd gone wrong with Izuku, or if it had all started prior to them meeting somehow. It was... devastating. The closest thing he'd had to a son had... god, it made him sick just thinking about it. He didn't know what to do. He felt hopeless, and like All For One had already managed to win. His successor belonged to the other side. He was the traitor. It made him want to scream in frustration. How had he not seen it? How had Young Midoriya fallen so far, and how had he missed it? If he'd only known... if he'd only helped...
"I just..." All Might didn't know. He had absolutely no idea. His chest felt empty. "I failed. I just failed, Aizawa. I've made a great many mistakes in my life, but this one... this one is the biggest one yet."
"I understand." Aizawa said, shifting the car into drive. All Might looked at him in surprise. Aizawa scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Maybe you missed it, but I have a kid. I know how you felt about Midoriya. I feel the same way about Lillian. I failed her. She grew up anxious and isolated because I wasn't there for her. Even though it's really not my fault, it still feels that way. I feel as though I've let her down. I let her get kidnapped, and she almost died. Even back before I knew she was mine, she was still suffering because of me. At the USJ..." He shook his head, turning out of the parking lot. He shot All Might a glance. Great, the man was crying. "Being a parent isn't easy. Sometimes you feel like you've fucked up so bad you can't come back from it. But I know not everything Midoriya presented was fake. Some of it was genuine. You need to believe that, and realize it wasn't your fault."
All Might was still crying by the time they made it to their first stop, Tsu's house. Aizawa parked and let them sit for twenty minutes until he was ready to go in. Toshinori didn't say it out loud, but he was thankful.
