008 | saving lives is a day-to-day occurrence
she needed a hero and
that's what she became
"TODAY'S TRAINING WILL BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT." started their dead-looking teacher. "You'll have three instructors. Me, All Might, and another faculty member will be keeping tabs on you."
"Sir! What kind of training is this?" Sero asked, raising his arm, which Serena saw no point in doing as he went ahead and spoke.
"Rescue," Aizawa said as he pulled out a card. As he explained today's lesson, Serena felt her eyes drooping from both exhaustion and boredom. Last night, her dad came home and informed her that he was 'unretiring' as he called it and to celebrate, they stayed up all night binge-watching Rin's favourite show, Brooklynn Nine Nine. It was an American show in English, something he had come across a while back. It was how he was slowly learning the foreign language. Serena would always laugh when he messed up his sentence, finding it hard to stay serious when he tried to talk to her. "That's all. Start getting ready."
Serena got up and grabbed her costume case, walking to the changing rooms with a yawn escaping her lips. "I am so excited for this class!" beamed Hagakure, who rose her arm into the air. "It's going to be so cool!"
The blue-haired beauty quickly got into her costume, not wasting any time in the changing room. She wasn't bothered to get scolded at by Iida for being late. Serena, like most of the class, ignored Iida's instruction. The bus's open layout ruined it anyway. Serena was one of the last people to get on.
Seeing the only available seat next to Todoroki, she moved to sit there. She flashed the boy a small smile before slipping on her headphones. When the bus rode over a bump, Serena felt a weight on her shoulder. She glanced to the side and saw Todoroki fast asleep, his head leaning against hers. Not minding the position at all, Serena continued to listen to her music, zoning out her classmate's and unaware of the jealous glares that were thrown at the sleeping Todoroki.
"We're here, stop messing around." The bus pulled up to a stop in front of a large dome building. As the students piled out of the bus, Serena shook awake the teen next to her.
"Todoroki," she called softly, her shoulder movement stirring him awake. "We've arrived." When he lifted his head up, he felt slightly embarrassed that he fell asleep on her shoulder. However, something warm tingled within him at the fact that she didn't move or anything.
"Thank you," he mumbled before the two got out as well.
"Hello, everyone! I've been waiting for you." greeted the Space Hero: Thirteen. Serena stood by Todoroki, watching the class awe at the hero in front of them. "I can't wait to show you what's inside."
When they stepped into the building, Serena couldn't help the gasp that left her lips. Inside the dome were different types of rescue training areas. There was a mountain, a landslide, a place with collapsed buildings, a water area for a shipwreck, a red dome which she presumed was for fires and even a stormy area.
"Holy crap! It looks like some type of amusement park," commented Kirishima as he, like everyone else, began to buzz with excitement.
"A shipwreck, a landslide, a fire, a windstorm, etcetera. I created this training facility to prepare you to deal with different types of disasters. I call it the 'Unforeseen Simulation Joint' but you can call it USJ." Thirteen said, resulting in everyone thinking of the Univeral Studio of Japan.
"Hey, shouldn't All Might be here already?" Serena turned away from the teachers, instead looking at her classmates that stood with excited grins on their faces. She couldn't help but zone in on Kirishima. Something about him acting happy brought her own up to the surface. "Clocks ticking. We should get started."
As Thirteen started her inspirational speech, Serena looked around the USJ, her mind coming up with multiple situations to each area. It was only until the sound of the bulbs fusing out and the fountain's water slowing down that Serena zoned back in. Her body tensed up when she caught sight of a purple swirl before the fountain.
"Mr Aizawa," she called, the cold, seriousness of her tone alerting those around her. Aizawa's eyes widened when he caught sight of what she was looking at.
"Everyone stay close together," he said, turning around to see a figure stepping out of the portal gate thingy. "Thirteen, protect the students!"
"W-what is that thing?" asked Kirishima as they finally saw the massive purply black thing in the middle of the USJ. "Wait, has the training started already? I thought we were rescuing people."
When Midoriya took a step forward, Aizawa shouted for him to stay back. He placed his eyepiece on, telling the students everything they needed to know. Serena's fists clenched up into fists. "They're villains," she informed them as Aizawa got ready to fight.
"So, you scumbags used the press as cover and snuck onto campus," realised Aizawa as the disgustingly ugly villains stepped closer. Serena could feel her anger rise.
"What? Real villains? No way! How can so many of them get into a UA facility this secure?" she heard Kirishima question.
"Yeah, Thirteen. Why aren't the alarms going off?" Yaoyorozu asked.
"Good question. I'm not sure," said the hero as she glanced at where the sensors were supposed to be.
"Is the entire campus under attack or is this their only target?" questioned Shoto Todoroki, surprising many who finally heard him speak. "Either way, if the alarm sensors aren't being triggered, then one of these villains must have a quirk that's masking their presence here." As Shoto continued his observation, Serena activated her ice quirk, feeling the rush of coolness along her skin.
She moved towards Aizawa, standing by his side. "Let me help you," she spoke, her voice void of emotion, yet her eyes were filled with determination and hatred at the sight before her.
"I can't let you do that," he spoke, stepping forward. "Thirteen, get them out of here and alert the main campus. Actually, if they've got the ability to block our sensors, then they might be jamming our regular communications too. Kaminari, try using your quirk to contact the school."
"What are you going to do?" Midoriya asked, worry and concern evident in his tone. "You can't fight them on your own." Serena felt her irritation grow when Midroiya underestimated their teacher.
"You can't be a Pro if you only have one trick," he said, glancing back at the students. His eyes then moved to the daughter of his ex-lover, who began to shake with anger. "Serena." the said girl turned towards him. "Remember what your father said. Whatever happens, don't show it." Even though the others didn't know what he meant, Serena understood it loud and clear. Her father warned her at the beginning of the year not to show the enemy her quirk; it would put a target on her back if she did. "I'll leave it to you, Thirteen."
Serena watched in slight amazement as her teacher managed to take down so many villains at a time. "Serena! Let's go," yelled Kirishima, who watched the girl try her hardest not to jump right in and help Aizawa fight.
The group all skidded to a stop when the purple villain warped its way in front of them. "It's a pleasure to meet you," it spoke, it's menacing yellow eyes looking down at them. "We are the League of Villains. I know it's impolite, but we've decided to invite ourselves into this haven of justice to say hello." Although they were up against a villain, Serena was surprised by how well mannered he was. I guess you really can't judge a book by its cover. "And besides, isn't this a fitting place for All Might, the symbol of peace, to take his last breath?"
Serena's eyes widened and just like that her anger flared up. "I believe he was supposed to be here today, yet I see no sign of him. There must have been some change of plans we could not have foreseen. Ah, well, in the end, I suppose it doesn't matter," it spoke as it began to extend its arms. "I still have a role to play."
Serena watched as Thirteen was about to release her quirk, when Bakugo and Kirishima lunged at him, activating their quirks and aiming for the villain, creating smoke from the explosion.
"Did you think we were just going to stand around and let you tear this place to shreds?" Kirishima asked, his whole arm hardened.
"You live up to your school's reputation." Serena watched as the villain stepped away without harm, showings into its metallic body. "But you should be careful children; otherwise, someone might get hurt."
"You two, get out of the way, right now!" Thirteen yelled.
"I'll scatter you across this facility to fight combats and torture you to death!" Serena felt nauseous when she felt herself being warped to somewhere else. One second she was standing in front of the gate, and the next, she found herself in the landslide zone.
"Akari!" hearing the voice of Todoroki, she got up from the floor, looking around for him.
"Todoroki!" When she saw him, she couldn't help but sigh in relief. At least she knew that someone was safe. "Are you alright?"
"Yes." The two looked around, seeing no others with them. "It seems everyone's been scattered around, just like he said." Serena felt a dangerous and psychotic rage build up within her. Hearing thundering footsteps making their way towards them, Serena and Todoroki both acted on impulse. They combined their ice powers to freeze the bodies of the villains that tried to sneak up on them. "Aren't you embarrassed to lose to children? For god sakes, you're adults, put up a real fight."
They continued to fight until all the villains in the area were frozen. "T-This power." one cried out, and Serena couldn't help but roll her eyes at how pathetic they sounded.
"Todoroki. I'll leave them to you," she said, her body overwhelming with power fueled by her emotions. As Todoroki gathered information from the low-level thugs, Serena used her ice to blast her off the ground, making her way over to the area where her teacher was currently was. She landed a few feet away from them, at the top of the stairs. She winced when she caught sight of his exposed and bloody elbow, seeing how the skin around it decayed.
'That must be his quirk' she thought as she glanced down at the male with the hand fetish.
"Mr Aizawa!" she yelled before lunging at the thug that tried to attack him with his chains. She gripped it in her hands, freezing the metal before destroying it with just a single crush. She threw her arm across the air, effectively freezing the villains in front of them. "Let me see your arm."
She grabbed it, shocking her teacher. Placing her hand over it, she encased the wound in a strong protective layer of ice, the inner layer soft and moist so it wouldn't stick to his skin. Aizawa nodded thanks to her, and they continued to fight against the thugs with Serena just warming up.
They fought back to back, making sure that neither got hurt by one of the thugs. If they weren't fighting for their lives, Aizawa would've felt pride swell up in his chest as his number one student managed to keep up with him and the never-ending waves of thugs. However, the only thoughts that occupied his mind were the safety of his students.
Her whole body began to get covered in frostbite, another drawback of hers, just like Todoroki's. The tips of her hair were glowing, signalling the use of one of her quirks. Aizawa was glad that her eyes weren't. Because that would mean she was using her other quirk, which he didn't want any of the villains to see. He promised Rin that he would protect his little girl, and he wasn't going to let him down again.
"Oh, by the way, hero." Serena heard the person that seemed to be the leader talk. "I am not the final boss." Everything happened in slow motion. The monstrous beast that stood behind Aizawa rose its hand, its claws extending before slashing at Aizawa's face. Serena watched with wide eyes as his gloves came flying off with blood soaking it. "What do you think of him, Eraserhead? Hm? He's the bioengineered anti-symbol of peace, but you can call him Nomu."
When the creature let out a growl, Serena felt her whole body explode with a power she didn't know she had and when it crushed his arms and smashed his face into the ground, her body began to glow a light blue, the air in the room tensing. "You can erase people's powers, that's irritating, but it's nothing impressive. When faced with true, devastating power, you might as well be a quirkless —"
The villain was cut off by a burning cold punch sent to his face, his body flying across the area. The Nomu glanced at its master in shock, his grip on Aizawa loosening but in his weak state, he couldn't move, especially with his broken arm. Aizawa's eyes widened when he saw his student glowing all over.
"I'm going to kill you for hurting him!" she snarled, a large wave of blue energy rushing out of her once she swung her arms out, freezing the whole area she was in, including the beast. When Aizawa saw her eyes glow, his own widened.
"Serena, no!" But it was too late, time around her froze, and she rushed after the creature, jumping into the air and raising her leg, wrapping it solid cold ice. She aimed for his chest, adding more power into the kick before unfreezing time, the Nomu crashing into the large rock behind him. Shigaraki watched in shock as the girl went from one side to the room to the other.
'Teleportation?'
Serena froze time again, crouching down and encasing Aizawa's body in ice, soothing the stinging pain and protecting him. She used her ice to move him away. If she was going to fight this beast, she was going to have to do it without worrying about anyone getting hurt.
When she unfroze time again, the beast was just starting to get up. She observed its reaction to her attack. The Nomu was strong, but it would've at least gotten an injury from her attack, yet, as it stood, she could see none.
'He must've absorbed the power of the kick' she analysed, watching as it stalked up to her. 'That's his quirk' she realised. Serena knew that in order to actually defeat the monster, she'd have to continuously hit him until he's at his limit or rip off his head.
When the Nomu charged after her, Serena froze time once again, using her ice powers to jump off the ground and into the air. She then formed a large make-shift hammer and unfroze time, smashing it down onto its head.
It was then that Shigaraki realised what exactly her quirk was. There was no way she could teleport and make a hammer without it being seen so that meant she could manipulate time and ice. A broad grin overtook his features, hidden behind the hand gripped onto his face. She continued to land multiple blows on him, waiting for the perfect opportunity. Each move she took was calculated in her head before it was made.
Midroiya, Asui and Mineta couldn't help but watch in utter awe. Their classmate was managing to defeat a monster that even their teacher couldn't.
"DIE YOU FUCKING BASTARD!" she yelled, gripping his arm just before it could punch her. Instantly it froze, engulfed in her deadly ice. She jumped off the ground and froze time. Him being airborne made it easier for her to throw him over her shoulder. She held onto the arm tightly and as the Nomu crashed into the ground, face first, his arm still in her grasp. Serena unfroze time, panting as she threw its ripped off arm away from the creature.
"My, my, my, you truly are powerful," hearing the voice of the leader of the group that called themselves the League of Villains had her skin crawling with anger. "I have a proposition for you," he said, grinning delightfully. "Join us. We could certainly use someone like you on our team." She turned towards him, sending him the nastiest glare she could muster up.
"If you think that I would consider joining your disgusting group of criminals, then you're fucking crazier than I thought." she spat, her eyes blaring with a fire that hooked Shigaraki in. There was something about her that ignited a flame of desire within him. He wanted — no, he needed her.
The male sighed. "That's too bad. You would've made an excellent queen by my side, but, if that's your decision, so be it."
While Serena was focused on the head villain, she didn't see the Nomu rise up behind her, regenerating a whole new arm, until it was too late.
"OOF," she flew to the other side of the area, crashing into the fountain and getting her soaking wet. "And I fucking liked this costume," she muttered furiously, lunging back at the monster who she knew she had to defeat with numerous blows sent his way. He had to pass his limit of shock absorption. She froze time and ran after it, immersing her fist in ice, packing a lot of energy into her punch and uppercutting the Nomu, his head snapping up once she unfroze time.
"SERENA!" hearing the voice of her green-haired friend made her eyes widen. She didn't know anybody else was here. Because of her hesitation, the Nomu swung his arm around, his hand slamming into her body and throwing her into the pond where her three classmates were. "Oh my god, are you alright?" the bush boy asked, fumbling around her.
Serena nodded, getting up. "Get Mr Aizawa and go. I'll deal with that thing." Her eyes held a whirlwind with emotions; even a blind man would tell see feared the beast before her. It was painfully apparent in the way she trembled in the pain it caused her. However, above all, the negative emotion was outshined by one emotion that stood out to all those who saw it. Bravery. It was this that blossomed into determination. As long as she was alive, Serena would not allow any of the people she cared about getting hurt.
She jumped back into the area, continuing with her battle against the Nomu. Slowly but surely, her powers were being sucked out of her. She was going over her limit, but in order to save her friends, she had to keep going. She had to protect them because if she didn't, who would?
The battle between the hideous beast and stunning goddess carried on for a while, with Serena damaging it just as much as it destroyed her. The blue-haired girl knew that when this was all over, she was going to be in so much pain. She knew that her body was probably injured beyond repair, but she thanked those above for creating the hormone adrenaline. Blood was slowly oozing out of numerous wounds in her face and arm, a small but relentless flow of crimson, but she felt no pain.
But as the fight prolonged, Serena's moves started getting sloppy. Her brain was tired, and she was using her energy to the max. When Serena went in for another punch, the Nomu managed to grip her body, throwing her up into the air. Serena stopped time, position herself so she could dive back down with an ice spear forming in her hand. When she unfroze time, her eyes widen when she didn't see the creature.
"Fuck," was the only thing she could say when she spotted the Nomu from above her. It raised both its fists and slammed her into the ground, a blood-curdling scream escaping her lips as she felt something snap in her back. Her pain was an icy wind choking the breath from her lungs and making a noose around her neck. It's savage, bitter blasts cut right to her bones and gripped her brain in it's freezing claws. Her heart constricted in its wake as if not sure if it should go on beating.
Class 1-A all froze in their places. They recognised that scream as the blue-haired beauty's, and it scared them to death. Todoroki, Kirishima and Bakugo sped up, sprinting to the area where the end of one battle was happening.
Serena coughed up blood, her vision becoming blurry as black dots began to fill it. Slowly, she tried to get up but quickly realised how futile it was when she had to bite her lip to keep from crying out. Sharp pain lanced through her body and dark spots flashed in front of her icy blue eyes.
'I need to get up' she thought to herself. 'I need to protect them.'
But alas, Serena had used up too much of her power. She was down, and she wasn't getting up any time soon. Just as she was about to slip into darkness, her ears picked up on the sound that brought great relief into her system before she passed out, her eyes rolling to the back of her head.
"FEAR NOT FOR I AM HERE!"
