Chapter 6
You lead him to one of your favorite places to go. It took a while to get there, but it was very worth it to see the look of pure joy on Sans' face.
The two of you had been walking for a good three hours, but he never complained, which was odd for anyone normal. Then again, Sans wasn't what could be called 'normal', but he was still smiling. You stopped him and stood behind a tree, blocking his view.
"Alright, close your eyes." Sans tensed up slightly and took a single step back. "Calm down, I'm not gonna hurt you. Why would I have helped you if I wanted to hurt you?" You asked him. He seemed to calm down just a little and nodded, covering his eyes with his ears. You grabbed his hand. "No peeking until I say, alright." He nodded again, still covering his eyes with his ears. You dragged him down to the shore where you had a small dock.
"Alright, open your eyes." You said, stopping at the end of the dock and sitting down. You looked at him as he opened his eyes. He started to smile and sat down beside you. You looked out at the lake. This was a hidden lake, you were the only one who knew about it, and now Sans did too.
It was a beautiful sight. The sun was setting, and the light was glimmering off the water. It looked like there were a million gemstones floating on the surface. The sky was lit up in an array of reds and oranges, fading out to deep, vibrant blues and purples as the sky slowly faded to night.
You and Sans had your feet hanging off the edge of the dock, swinging them back and forth just above the glassy surface of the water. Sans was fully relaxed beside you, staring out across the water. The sun finally fell down past the treeline and the stars began to shine above you.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" You asked Sans. He nodded beside you. He was smiling up at the stars. "You know, I've never seen the stars before. They're beautiful." You turned to him, startled. "What do you mean you've 'never seen the stars'? You've been up here for a month." He turned to look at you, and looked down at his shoes, kicking the water. "I-I don't wanna talk about it." You were worried, so you scooted closer and put your arm around his shoulder.
"I know that we only met a few days ago, but you can tell me anything. I won't tell another soul." He tensed up under your arm, but relaxed again, taking a deep breath. "I-It's a kinda long story." You kept silent, and he took another deep breath. "It's my brother. He fucking hates me, and when we got up here I saw the sun. That's the only light I'd seen for months. After that he threw me in a hole somewhere and left me. The human, Frisk; she helped me escape, but Papyrus found me. That's why I was so beat up in that damn cave. He left me there to die."
There were tears pricking at the corners of his eyes. You were dumbstruck and silent. Anger and sympathy battled for control of your actions. Sympathy won that battle and you pulled Sans into a hug. He inhaled sharply, startled by your sudden action. He calmed down and grabbed your jacket, sobbing. He was breaking down in your arms. You sighed, "Just let is out. Don't bottle this up anymore." You did the only thing you could think of. You stroked his ears. His breath hitched and he froze in your arms.
You looked down to see him blushing. "T-that feels really good..." he whispered under his breath. You smiled and nudged his shoulder. "You ready to go home?" He nodded, and you pulled him up with you. "Alright, close your eyes again." There was no hesitation, he just folded his ears over his eyes. You grabbed his hand and started walking, and at the same time, teleported.
You appeared in the living room, and sat Sans down on the couch. "You can open your eyes now silly." You said, and he removed his ears from his eyes meekly. "C'mon, let's get your bandages changed." You sat down beside him and he removed his jacket and shirt. You worked quickly and silently. He was healing a lot faster than you thought he would. His breaks were mended and most of the major cracks and splinters were healed. There were still a few bruises and minor cuts, but those were so small.
"There you go." You had finished unwrapping the last break and making sure that it was okay to leave out. "Thanks" Sans was putting his shirt back on as you got up and prepared some more venison. You used smaller pieces so that you could cook them faster and spent only about thirty minutes in the kitchen cooking.
The two of you ate in silence. The sink was stacking up with dishes, you'd have to wash them tomorrow, but for now you were worried about Sans. "You ready for bed?" He nodded and you pulled him up, taking him to his room. You sat him down on the bed and went to leave the room. Sans grabbed your wrist a second time. When you turned he shrunk away slightly and dropped your wrist. "Yeah?" "C-can you stay with me? I don't w-wanna be alone." He was blushing again and you smiled. "Sure." You sat down and laid beside him.
He was very tense for a little while, but slowly relaxed into his slumber. You were half asleep when he woke you up. He had subconsciously cuddled up to you. You froze, but when you realized that it was just him you sighed and put an arm around his shoulders. He cuddled even closer to you and you smiled. He was so different from the monsters you knew as a child all those years ago. The blood-thirsty beasts who killed for power.
You started to stroke Sans' ears again, and a low purring sound emanated from his rib cage. You chuckled at him. He had been through so much, yet somehow he still managed to keep a smile on his face. You slowly let your hand rest and you laid back on the pillow, falling into a slumber. The last thought that echoed through the corridors of your mind being 'I will keep you safe.'
