Chapter 5

You sat beside Sans on the mattress on the floor. You didn't want to go to sleep beside him. You imagined how awkward it would be if he woke up before you. You tried to leave, but Sans wouldn't let go of your wrist. He had a grip of steel. You just leaned back against the wall and got comfortable.

Sans let go and you looked down to see him inching his way into the corner in his sleep. He was shivering, curled up in a little ball. His tail was wrapped around his legs and his ears were pressed up against his skull. He was mumbling something incoherent, and his eyes were shut tight.

You knew that feeling all too well. 'Nightmares' was the only thought running through your head. You've been having nightmares since you escaped the humans all those years ago. You pulled him into your lap, shushing him. Nightmares weren't anything anyone should have to deal with.

He curled up in your lap and shifted into a wolf again. He was still curled in a ball, and you wrapped him up in a blanket and picked him up, rubbing his back. He was whimpering and growling in your arms. It was worrying you. Still shushing him you pulled him closer to your chest, allowing him to rest against your legs. He was slowly beginning to calm down.

Sans was still whimpering, but he had stopped quivering in your arms. Allowing yourself to relax you leaned back against the wall. "Jeez, you're quite the handful." You chuckled to yourself. It was around two in the morning, and you were getting tired. Your eyes started to droop and you let sleep take over.

You were walking in the woods with your pack, scouting for human forces. You were only fourteen at the time, but you were the strongest of your people. You had the most powerful were-wolf magic yet, and they sent you on the scouting mission as protection.

Suddenly your pack was ambushed. You fought long and hard, but the humans killed them all, every one of them. Fear engulfed your young mind and you ran. You ran as fast as you could and hid in a cave. You were dead silent as the human's voices could be heard just outside your hiding place.

Their stomps were loud and unsettling. Every time you heard one you flinched back towards the cave wall. But you were silent.

Soon enough the stomps echoed away, growing distant like the sound of dripping water. For hours you hid in that cave, until you were certain that the humans had left. Quietly, you made your way to the cave mouth, stepping out and retracing your steps. You had to find them, if they were still alive.

You were afraid of what you might see, what would be there where the ambush happened. You sat, afraid to look beyond the tree you were leaning on, but you did anyways. A silent gasp escaped your throat as you looked at your pack, your family, dead on the ground. There was blood everywhere, and the dead bodies of humans and were-wolves alike were lying in the jumbled mess.

Your eyes fluttered open. You were used to your nightmares by now. They didn't shake you so much anymore. You were still leaning against the wall, but Sans was missing from your lap. He was curled up against the wall again, but at least he was still on the mattress. You looked over at the clock. It was past noon. "Cripes, how did I sleep that long?" You mumbled, inching closer to Sans.

He had changed back into a skeleton at some point in the night, and was curled up in the corner sleeping peacefully. It was a good changed from the frightened ball he was last night. You grabbed his shoulders and he shot awake again, startling you. "Jeez Sans, can you not jump every time I wake you up?" you chuckled. "I can't do shit right." He mumbled to himself while nodding at your question. You doubted he meant for you to hear that. "Hey, don't say that about yourself. You can do plenty right." He looked up at you, startled. "I didn't mean for you to hear that." You just shrugged. "I know, now come on." You stood up and offered Sans a hand.

He looked at you, confused. "Well we don't have all day." You shook your hand in emphasis and he hesitantly took it. "What are we doing." "We're gonna do something fun." you answered, pulling him up. He seemed to smile slightly. "But first, breakfast." You dragged him downstairs and grabbed the leftover venison from last night.

"Your ribs any better?" you asked as the two of you ate. He was eating a bit more slowly now than he had the last couple of days. "Yeah, they don't feel like all hell broke loose anymore." The both of you finished your food pretty quick, and you took the plates and walked back into the kitchen. You grabbed a little bag and walked back to the couch where Sans was. "I've got a surprise for you." You dropped the bag beside Sans and he stared at it like it was a live bomb. "Well go on, open it." He grabbed it and cautiously pulled it open. He got wide-eyed as he pulled out his jacket and t-shirt.

"Thought that'd make you happy." You smiled at him as he slipped on his hoodie. "T-thanks." "Shall we?" You extended a hand which he took without hesitation this time. "Sure." he was smiling now. "So, where we going?" He asked you. You had the perfect answer. "You'll see when we get there." he seemed to grow nervous at those words, but followed you regardless. You'd have to ask him why he was so hurt when you found him, but for now having some fun seemed like a better plan.
