Chapter 2: Introductions

She approached carefully, as nimbly as she could with her already numb limbs. Up close the skeleton was tiny, smaller than a toddler curled the way he was. He was covered from head to toe in ice and snow, drenched to the bone. He was heaving and shuddering, covered in something that at least looked like blood.

An enormous parka hung loose about his frame, tattered- and the red sweater beneath was nearly torn to ribbons. His shorts seemed to be the only surviving article of clothing.

As she got closer he looked at he. The fear in his eyes was obvious, and he tried to scurry away. His hands began to glow red, as well as his left eye. He was obviously trying to conjure some magic attack, but he was in no condition.

"Shh.. hey, hey. I'm not gonna hurt you, c'mere.". She shushed him gently, crouching down and stretching out her arms. His magic grew bright for a split second and a bone appeared. It flew to her at a child's pace and bounced off her bicep. With that his magic flickered and died again. He was left to continue trying to back away from her. It didn't last very long before he fell down.

Slowly she inched closer, remaining crouched. She stepped gently and reached out. He continued to shrink away, but she was gaining ground. Now that he was unfurled it was revealed that he was only a little bit smaller than her. An inch or two shorter, perhaps. He was pudgy, short legs. Any exposed bone was obviously scratched and chipped. Some broken and healed.

"What's your name?", she asked in a whisper- he'd frozen now, just staring.

...

A moment passed, and...

"... the name's Sans."

"Well, Sans. I know the cold goes right through those bones of yours...", his eyes widened at the pun, and he snorted before throwing a hand up to his face, "... but I'm turning blue out here." She gestured to her scantily clad body.

"Do you wanna come back with me? There's a fire, and ya seem a bit hurt there... I could fix ya up." She reached and held her hand out to him. With some hesitation, he took it. She could feel it shaking in her palm. His bones were cold to the touch.

She pulled him up gently, standing off her stiff limbs. He stood, then winced and fell again. When she caught him and picked him up he looked at her, surprised. He was stiff in her arms, still scared, but he didn't struggle.

As she neared the still open door, Sans still snugly in her grasp, she sped up her pace. The heat from the fire was amazing on her frozen skin, and it seemed that Sans agreed. His entire body relaxed as if he were melting into the heat.

As she entered, she pushed her ears beneath her hair, and dropped her tail into her shorts. She sat him down on the cave floor close to the fire, pulling his parka from his shoulders.

"Here, get out of those wet clothes so you can warm up. I'll get you a change, we look close enough to the same size." She smiled warmly, taking hold of the remains of his sweater.

"I'll throw the change around the corner, tell me when you're decent- okay?" He nodded in response, looking down.

She retrieved his clothes and as requested he called for her when he was covered enough to not be embarrassed. She'd brought with her a first aid kit this time, sitting down next to him. He shrank away from her, but stayed put.

"So what hurts, Sans? We're gonna get ya bandaged up." He looked down and gestured to his left leg.

"Let's take a look then, huh?" She gingerly picked up Sans' leg, to which he winced. He'd broken the fibula.

"Tibia honest, Sans, it looks pretty bad, but not.. Too bad." He snorted at the pun again, and she took note. Laughter is, afterall, the best medicine.

"I'm gonna have to set it for ya, think ya can handle that?" He nodded, staring at her hands.

"I won't tell ya any fibula, this is gonna hurt." When he snorted again she wrenched the bone back into place. He yelled and heaved for a moment.

"GODDAMNIT! FUCK! OWWWW!" He nearly ripped his leg from her grasp, but she held fast, keeping the bone from getting out of place.

"See? That wasn't so bad, all better." He'd looked scared after cursing like that, staring at her as if expecting something, wincing when she moved, but when she spoke he looked almost puzzled before shaking his head. She wrapped a bandage around the wound, pulling it tight.

"There, does that feel better." Sans nodded.

"Yea.."

A moment of silence passed between the two before she clapped her hands.

"So are ya hungry?"

Sans jerked his head up, surprised, but nodded. She smiled, those leftovers would go to use after all.

"Does a hamburger sound okay?" At that he nodded ferociously, and she giggled. "Hamburgers it is then, I'll warm 'em up." She stood and walked away, but before she could disappear around the corner he called for her.

"H-hey, uh.."

"Yes, Sans?"

"I, uh.. I never got your name."

She smiled.

"It's Carlsa."
