• Prologue •

One winter's night, in the land of Egaliete, there was an extravagant ball. It was held at the Featherbend kingdom's castle, and beings from all across Egaliete were there. People dined on the finest foods, and sipped the finest wines and ales- well, there was Nesquik for the kids. People danced in extravagant dresses and suits, and held their glasses high when the Featherbend family entered the room, unaware of the dreadful events that lied ahead.

The king entered first, bowing to all his comrades and the citizens. He had a mighty beard that was a deep navy, and a long braid of  hair majestically cascading down his back. He had this sort of aura, you could say, that made you want to say "Look at King Featherbend, isn't he such a mighty king? I bet he won all of his wars."

The queen entered next, curtsying to her friends and citizens. She smiled a big lipstick-y smile to everyone. She was beautiful, no one could deny that. Her long pastel pink and green hair was woven into a beautiful braided bun. She walked to sit in her throne next to her husband, being careful not to trip on her long silver dress. Everything about her made you want to say, "She's beautiful, isn't she! I bet she's as pretty on the inside as she is on the outside.".

  Finally, there was the prince.

He stepped out into the ballroom wearing a grayish black suit, his chin held high to uphold his crown. (It was rather heavy.) His eyes were as emerald green as his mother's, and his hair was as navy as his father's. As soon as he stepped into the room, girls, boys, and non-binary citizens alike nearly fainted at the mere sight of him. (Some did.) The prince made everyone speechless, for there was no one in all of Egaliete that could make your heart skip a beat or two like the prince. He put on his signature dazzling smile, and made is way to the front of the room.

"Ladies, lords, and non-binary royalty. We are gathered here to celebrate our 793rd year of peace between all of our kingdoms. I do hope you will enjoy our buffet as well as the music. I see you, Percy. Don't dance with all the boys yet, the music hasn't even started." The crowd laughed and Percy chuckled, winking at a boy across the room.

  "My mother and father-"

  CRASH!

"Oh, do us a favor and kill your mother and father already. No one really cares about them anyway." A figure was leaned up against one of the highest windows in the ballroom, it's glass being shattered. The figure messed with their nails. "Or... no one should, at least." There were yelps and gasps of surprise, shock, and fear, but none from the prince. "Reveal yourself!" The figure laughed, and jumped from his 38-story-tall perch, headed straight for the floor. They slammed down against the marble, almost breaking it. They ripped of their hood to reveal the person underneath.

"Gray. What are you doing here? I thought you were imprisoned in Hain." Gray scoffed at him. "I'm a criminal. I must've.." He walked up to the prince and put his hands on the prince's hips, his gaze not moving from his chest. The room gasped. "...escaped." He looked up to meet the prince's eyes, giving him a fake pout. It was fake, because in the corner of his mouth was a smirk. "Sowwy."

The prince removed Gray's hands from his waist and stepped backwards. "Get away from me, Gray!" Gray scoffed at his actions, but persisted nonetheless. He grabbed the prince by his throat and held him against the nearest wall. "Listen to me, sweetheart. You're either gonna love me, or you'll regret it." The prince gasped for air, unable to answer. Gray set him down, letting the prince escape his clutches. "Never, Gray. Never." Gray's eyes narrowed and he scowled. "Fine then. Listen close, because I'm not going to repeat myself." The prince leaned his head in, to show he was listening. Gray's eyes turned black, as if summoning a demon.

"On exactly this day next year, someone close to you will lose something that is their reason for living. There is nothing you can do to stop this. They must battle me in combat, wits, and gladiator fighting. Only then, after surviving everything, will I give a brief period of rest before I put them through h*ll every day until the day they die."

"You are foolish to curse me." The prince said, reaching for his sword.

"You are foolish to test me." Gray made a shoving motion towards the prince and they flew backwards five feet. Gray scaled the wall behind him, hopping out of the broken window.

Everyone rushed to the prince soon after Gray left. They made sure he wasn't hurt, and that he felt well. He said he felt weak, and needed to lie down in his quarters. The servants helped him to his room and laid him down on his bed.

Ever since that night, he has trained for Gray to come back and take everything away from him. He has distanced himself from his family and friends in an attempt to keep them safe. He has trained his mind, worked his body to its max, and fought against every gladiator in the land.

But he could never truly be ready for what the future held for him.
