"(F/n)-chan!" I quickened my pace with a bright smile. I waved at the Iwatobi swim team as I approached. The first to hug me was Nagisa, who surprised me with the unexpected strength. "We missed you!"
"Nagisa-kun, I only just saw you in school," I chuckled while ruffling his blonde hair. I went ahead and gave Gou, Rei, Makoto, and Haru (oh, I know, surprising) hugs and greeted both Coach Sasabe and Miss Ama-chan with a bow.
"We barely see you though!" Gou pouted at me. "Haru-kun and Makoto-kun get to see you every day because you have the same class as them!"
"I can't deny that," I answered her with a shrug. I placed a hand on both her and Rei's shoulder. "But your number one supporter is here now! I'm ready to cheer everyone on for prefectural! Right?"
"Right!" The three second-years chanted with anticipation.
I glanced to the paper I had grabbed from the entrance and scanned it. "Looks like Mako-chan is up first!" I gave him a smack on his shoulder, in which he let out a yelp to. "Good luck, bud!"
He shot me a sheepish smile while rubbing the sore spot I had hit him on. "Thanks, (F/n)-chan."
Everyone else said their good lucks to the green-eyed boy before he walked off to get ready for his race. I sat down right next to Haru, settling myself to cheer on my team. "(F/n)-kun, how come you haven't been able to come to our practices and such?" Rei questioned me out of curiosity.
"Oh, well, other than adapting into the new school year as a third-year, I actually joined a club-"
"You could've joined us!" Both Gou and Nagisa proclaimed, startling me.
"Guys, I don't swim! You know this," I replied with an apologetic smile.
"I don't either!" Gou pointed out.
"What you guys need is more swimmers. I wouldn't be much good if I joined just because we're all friends," I told them. "I'll try to come to all the upcoming events!"
"You promise?" The three second-years said simultaneously.
I sweat dropped at their attitude. "I promise." I glimpsed over at Haru. "Jeez, do they really miss me that much?"
His sapphire eyes shifted over to me. "Yeah," he muttered out. "It's weird not having you at our practices everyday like last year."
"Aww, Haru-chan, you missed me too!" I leaned into him with a smirk tugging on my lips. "I didn't know you felt the same way!"
Just slightly along with usually expressionless face, there was a tint of pink. "No, I see you every day. I don't miss you."
"Don't be so mean!" I pouted at him. "You missed me at least a little bit." I nudged his arm. "Right? I'm right."
"Why are we friends?"
"Haru-chan, I've been with you and Makoto since we were in elementary school. You're not getting rid of me anytime soon!" I told him. "Speaking of which, where's Rin? I haven't seen him in ages!"
"My brother is probably sitting with his team," Gou answered me. "Did you know he's the captain now?"
"You're kidding!"
"I'm not."
"That's fantastic! I definitely need to meet up with him later and congratulate him," I quipped.
Prefectural continued on with race after race. With each Iwatobi boy, I cheered as loudly as I could. It shocked me even when I saw that Makoto decided to do freestyle along with Haru. But all in all, each boy had passed to the next round.
"If you excuse me," I stood up and started to shuffle my way out from the bleachers.
"Where are you going? You don't want to watch the girls' backstroke race?" Rei questioned me.
"As much as I would like to, I'm going to go ahead and grab something from the vending machines to drink," I told the Iwatobi team.
"Would you like one of us to accompany you, (F/n)-chan?" Makoto offered.
"No, I'm good," I grinned. "I'll be very quick, ok?" I hurried out of the bleachers and walked down the halls to where I'm sure I've seen some vending machines. Thankfully, it didn't take me too long to find one.
I rushed over to it and waited behind the guy who's getting a drink himself. I narrowed my eyes slightly at the person in front of me. He seemed familiar but I had no idea where I might have seen him before.
He was tall, definitely taller than Makoto. He had short, messy black hair. And he was very well-built, the perfect swimmer's body. What I noticed also was that he was wearing the official Samezuka outfit. I racked my brains on who this person was. No, he wasn't on the swim team last year. I would have remembered someone like him. But where have I seen him before?
He turned around so abruptly that he nearly crashed into me. I quickly stepped back. Now that I had a chance to look at his face, I am positive that I knew him from somewhere. "Oh, I'm sorry," I murmured out, a blush grazing my cheeks.
"No... Uh, were you checking me out?" The tall Samezuka boy asked me with a smirk.
I froze in my spot. How dare he ask that! But it may have seemed like it in a way. "No, I was not!" I sputtered out, my face completely burning. "All I want is something from the vending machine. Don't flatter yourself!" I quickly zoomed around him so I could finally get to the vending machine. "Besides, I thought you looked familiar from somewhere... But maybe I was wrong. I wouldn't usually acquaint myself with conceited people." I shoved the right amount of money into the slot and pressed the button to my desired drink.
"Wow, feisty for someone small," I heard him comment behind me. My drink clanked down and I bent down to pick it up. I turned towards him with a scowl on my face. He still had that smirk on his handsome face... No, I can't deny the fact that he was attractive but his personality had numbed it down a bit. "I'm Sousuke Yamazaki."
The name struck a chord in me. I definitely heard that name somewhere before. "That sounds so familiar," I murmured out with knitted eyebrows.
"I thought you said you wouldn't have been acquainted with conceited people," he replied before taking a sip of his drink. I let out an audible sigh of annoyance, in which he smiled more to.
I stared at the black of his jacket. Samezuka... "You know Rin-chan?" I asked him.
"Yeah, he's my best friend."
Suddenly, flashbacks played through my head of the Iwatobi swim club tournaments from way back then. Along with Rin, I remembered a dark haired boy with whom he would always laugh with before he had moved to the same elementary school as the rest of us.
"Oh, that's right," I uttered. "I do remember. You were in Sano Elementary with Rin-chan, right?"
"Yeah, I was," he answered solemnly. His aqua green eyes seemed to burn into my soul... I didn't mind actually. They were a beautiful color. "So, I told you my name, what's yours?"
I contemplated if I really did want to tell him my name. Before I could say anything else, I spot Haru coming over to the two of us. "Haru-chan," I greeted him. This made Sousuke turn around to who I suddenly shifted my attention to.
My friend didn't look very pleased. "You were taking a long time," Haru dead panned. He suddenly grabbed hold of my free hand and pulled me farther away from Sousuke. For a brief moment, I saw the two raven haired boys have a stare-down. Apparently, I missed something here. "Let's go." He tore me away from my spot and from Sousuke.
I tried my best to match Haru's pace as he seemed to be walking fairly fast. I craned my head back at Sousuke and saw him about to walk the opposite direction. "My name is (F/n) (L/n), by the way!" I shouted back at him. I see Sousuke turn his head to glance back at me and a smile appeared on his face. He then continued his walk, without anything to say.
I turned towards Haru, who kept his gaze forward as he tugged me down the hallway. "Haru-chan!" I uttered as my feet stumbled a bit due to Haru's speed. "Haru-chan, please slow down! You're going to make me spill my drink."
Fortunately, he did lessen the speed but his grip on my hand was still tight. "Don't talk to Yamazaki."
"Heh?"
Haru stopped unexpectedly, which caused me to bump into his back. (He should be thankful that none of my drink sloshed out of the can.) "I don't want you to talk to Sousuke Yamazaki," he dictated with a lot more seriousness than what I would usually get from him.
"Haru, what's the deal between you and Sousuke? I would have thought that since you're both Rin's friends--"
My ebony-haired friend then told me what had happened at Coach Sasabe's grand opening event, Splash Fest. He mentioned how the tall Samezuka boy had approached him to tell him how idiotic he was for letting Rin swim in their relay race last year and not to interfere with the redhead's dreams.
I pursed my lips at the current situation. From what Haru had told me, Sousuke sounded like bad news... But it's pretty hard not to be interested in him. I want to take in my friend's words and avoid him... I don't think I can, though. "(F/n), promise me you won't talk to him anymore."
"... I-I promise," I murmured, easing Haru's pent up worries. With that said, we continued our stroll and made it back to the bleachers without missing too much of the competition. I shifted in my seat awkwardly.
I always hated lying to the boys, Haru especially.
...
After day one had finished, I was finally able to greet the Samezuka boys. The Iwatobi team decided to let me do it on my own, so they stayed outside the entrance waiting for me. "Aii-chan!" I proclaimed, bursting over to the boys in black and hugging the silver haired second-year.
"(F/n)-chan, please don't call me that," Nitori sweat dropped at the nickname Nagisa and I preferred to call him by.
"Tch, really? You hug Nitori first instead of me?" Rin grumbled, looking down intensely at the rest of us. "We've been friends longer, (F/n). I'm hurt." With a sigh, I pulled away from Nitori and gave Rin a hug. "This doesn't make up for hugging him first."
I gave him a good smack at the back of his head and squeezed him tighter. "Don't be so jealous, Rin-chan." Over his shoulder and spotted Sousuke looking at me. I can feel my cheeks flare up under his gaze.
"Do I get a hug?" He asked me with that smirk that I seem to have gotten used to already.
"Haha, funny," I scoffed while pulling away from Rin.
The redhead swimmer averted glances from the two of us, definitely suspicious to whatever is going on. "So, you two met before?"
"We only met about an hour ago," I answered. "We were both at the vending machines. Rin, I never knew you were best friends someone so conceited... Oooh wait, never mind, I take it back. It's not much of a surprise."
I grinned manically when I got the reaction I wanted from Rin. He looked genuinely hurt with his mouth agape. "Wha? What does that mean, (F/n)?" He asked me.
"Do I need to remind you of what happened last year?" I quipped with a raised brow. That shut shark boy right up. I smiled at him and ruffled his long, magenta locks. "But, oi, we're friends again! So, don't fret, Rin-chan!"
"So, (F/n), you going to give me your number any time soon or what?" Sousuke piped up.
I glanced over at him, my hands on my hips. "And why would I do that?"
"Because you think I'm quite charming," he confidently stated.
All I could do was roll my eyes at the comment. Maybe I can play a little hard to get for a bit. I know for damn sure that I'll see him sometime later in the future. "I better get going. Everyone's waiting for me," I told the Samezuka boys while I started walking backwards towards the exit.
"Wait, seriously?" The aqua eyed boy muttered with disappointment in his voice. "No, number?"
I smugly smiled at all of them. "Bye, boys. I'll see you later." I turned my heel and exited the building, feeling accomplished at what I did.
I don't know I decided to go with it like this. Maybe I wanted to get back at Sousuke for being so mean to Haru, or maybe it's just a bit entertaining to do so. Either way, I really hope that I'll see him soon.
~*~*~A Couple of Days Later~*~*~
"Yeah, I'll see you guys tomorrow!" I told my club as I made my way to exit the school. We all dispersed separate ways after another successful meeting. I paused slightly at the doorway of the school. "Maybe I should go visit the boys," I muttered under my breath, pondering on what I should do with the little extra time I have.
"Oi! (F/n)!" A low, familiar voice called out to me near the gates of the school. My eyes instantly dart over there, finding the owner of the voice.
"Sousuke?" I uttered out as I walked my way over to the tall swimmer. Passing girls giggled as they eyed him flirtatiously. I immediately glared at them, in which they saw and scurried away.
"Oh, wow. Jealous over me already?" The raven haired boy chortled.
My cheeks flared and I glimpsed away from him. "What are you doing here, Sousuke?" I asked him in a huff.
He shifted his feet so now he was standing up straight, making him so unbelievably taller. "Well, I'm here for your number."
I snapped over at him. "Is that seriously all you're here for?" I questioned him exasperatedly. "You couldn't have asked Rin or Nitori for my number?"
"I don't know, but that seems a little odd," he shrugged. "Don't you think people should get other people's numbers from the person themselves?" I was silent. He did have a point there. "Were you expecting me to do something else?" Again, speechless. Of course I wanted to do something now that he's here.
"Well, you're here now. We might as well do something," I murmured out. "That's basically why you wanted my number right? So we can hang out sometime? We can do that now... Or I'm going home."
I took a step to the side to go around him but he quickly blocked my way. "If you want to," he replied.
I sighed at his supposed cool-guy attitude. "Stop being a prick and let's go to a cafe." I grabbed onto the sleeve of his Samezuka jacket and we went.
I learned from our little outing that I really enjoyed hanging out with Sousuke. Once he dropped the act, we were able to hold heated conversations about anything that came to our minds, like interests, desires, family and such. In a way, he had become more attractive by opening up to me.
We've been in the café for a good couple of hours, so when we left, the sun was beginning to set. We decided it was the time to go home, seeing that it'll be dark soon. Sousuke walked alongside me to my home. He had mentioned that I shouldn't be alone while walking at this time of day, despite the fact that I've done so since the school year started.
At my doorstep, I turned toward the tall swimmer with a smile. "I actually had fun today, Sousuke. Thank you," I told him.
He returned a genuine smile and shrugged his shoulders. "Yeah. We should do it sometime again soon." I bit down on my lip trying to push down the butterflies in my stomach. Without thinking much into it, I blurted out my phone number to him. "I'm sorry, what was that?" he asked me with a raised brow.
"That was my number. (Your number)... I'm not going to repeat myself," I said in a huff. He just hummed in response, still with that handsome smile plastered on his face. "You got it?"
"Yeah, I got it. I'll text you later then, (F/n)." He turned his heel and left me at my house, without anything else to say.
I could help it. I grinned warmly to myself. A fluster of butterflies erupted into my stomach and I could feel my cheeks warming up.
I've fallen for Sousuke Yamazaki. It's been so quick that I wasn't able to ready myself.
God damn it.
