033 choosing to fall or to fly.

 ( chapter thirty three )
CHOOSING TO FALL OR TO FLY.

Charlie smiled lightly as she faced her Mr. LaRusso and Johnny from between Miguel and Demetri. The two older men had seemed to figure out their issues, ready to teach everyone as one dojo. She was excited, ready to finally see what Johnny Lawrence could bring to the table.

"Hi-yah!" Everyone spoke, standing in their position as they waited for further instructions. "Today is about learning proper defense and offense." Mr. LaRusso explained, sending Johnny a small nod as he did so.

"If you're gonna be a well rounded fighter, you're gonna need to do both." Johnny continued, sending a nod right back Mr. LaRussos way. Charlie made quick eye contact with Miguel, smiling lightly as she did so. Things really did feel different.

"So, first up I'd like Sam to come up here with me so I can show you all proper ways to defend yourself against an opponent." Mr. LaRusso spoke, ushering Sam up while Johnny took her spot on the other side of Miguel.

Charlie watched closely, hoping to gain as much as she could from watching. She'd been out of practice for a long time, but she was ready to get back into it.

She watched the way Mr. LaRusso blocked all of Sam's kicks, physically stopping her and holding onto her leg.

Charlie turned her head slightly when she felt someone's eyes on her, instantly making eye contact with Hawk as the boys own eyes widened. Charlie just sent him a quick small smile, turning her attention back to Sam and Mr. LaRusso.

She bit down on her lip lightly, trying to stay focused as her mind wandered to reasons the boy could have had to have his eyes planted on her.

"Nice work, Sam." Mr. LaRusso smiled. "Okay, Miguel, time to show them some offense." Johnny smiled, pulling Miguel up onto the deck with him for the two to spar.

Charlie watched intently, noticing all the smaller details between their fight as they went back and forth trying to take over who was forced to defend.

Miguel grabbed Johnny by the back of the head, swinging him around before throwing his knee up at the man. Johnny just took Miguel's hands and swung them off of himself, creating an opening and kicking the boy straight in the chest.

Charlie was honestly pretty excited to be able to learn some more offense. She enjoyed defense and what Mr. LaRusso taught them, but she knew just as well as anyone else that in every sport you can't just have one or the other, every team needs strong offense and defense to truly win.

They gave the teens a quick lunch break before they were all right back to it, the team watching as Johnny and Mr. LaRusso fought, Johnny wearing a protective vest, helmet, and arm pads as he allowed Mr. LaRusso to just hit and kick him to demonstrate an offensive style.

Charlie had never really seen that side of Mr. LaRusso before, just proving to the whole team how badass their sensei truly was.

Next they all moved on to meditation, Mr. LaRusso leading them all through (including Johnny). Charlie took in a deep breath as she focused herself, always enjoying this part of Mr. LaRussos teaching.

Soon enough they were done and back at the sparring deck, watching as now Mr. LaRusso wore the protective gear while Johnny sent kicks and punches his way, Mr. LaRusso suddenly swinging and catching Johnny off guard before the other man moved into the crane kick that Mr. LaRusso was known for.

Charlie smirked as Mr. LaRusso just threw the pads down, walking off the deck. "Come on, what's up?" Johnny wondered immediately.

Then it was time for everyone to give it a try, one by one each sparring against their Sensei for just one point. First was Bert and Johnny, then Demetri and Mr. LaRusso, Hawk and Johnny, Chris and Mr. LaRusso, and so on as they each tried to fight offensively.

Charlie soon found herself against Mr. LaRusso, sending a kick his way before punching toward him twice, the man just grabbing her wrist and spinning her around, disarming the girl and stopping his fist at her stomach.

"Damn." Charlie sighed, moving off the deck with the man. "Your foundations came back quick. Just got unlucky that defense is my specialty." Mr. LaRusso spoke, patting the girl on the back lightly.

Charlie nodded, chuckling lightly as she moved to stand beside Demetri. "I don't think he should say stuff like that to minors." Charlie joked, smirking as she watched Demetri literally cover his mouth to not laugh.

Soon enough practice was over for the day, everyone parting ways and heading to their own cars. Charlie sighed as she looked at Johnnys car, not eager to have to ride back to Miguel's in it. He'd told the girl he'd save her some gas that day, and now she'd have to find herself in his bird car all over again.

Charlie quickly grabbed the handle, sliding the back door open as Miguel sat up front with Johnny.

They wouldn't find themselves returning home quickly, instead heading over to the LaRussos to have an early dinner. Charlie had mentioned feeling a bit awkward for invading the Sam-Miguel family dinner, but Carmen had quickly noted how the girl was practically Miguel's sister.

So, Charlie found herself in Sam's room, happy to have brought a change of clothes as she laid on her friend's bed staring at her phone. Miguel was sat at Sam's desk while the girl was looking through her closet and Charlie was sure the only reason Mr. LaRusso was okay with Miguel even being near Sam's room was because Charlie was there too.

"Things are going really well at the dojo, don't you think?" Sam smiled, turning her head around toward the other two for a moment before looking into her closet again. "They're building a really nice bond." She continued.

"Like an old married couple." Charlie added.

Miguel shook his head, laughing. "I don't think either of them would want that title." Charlie shrugged, not looking away from her phone. "No one can avoid their destiny. I picture them moving off to a ranch together one day and riding horses."

"That just sounds like a really watered down Brokeback Mountain." Sam noted, moving to lay beside Charlie. "I mean if the boot fits, am I right?" Charlie replied, the two girls quickly cuddling together with smiles.

"How am I watching you steal my girlfriend right in front of my eyes?" Miguel wondered jokingly, watching the two. "Read it and weep, Diaz. I'm a chick magnet." Charlie replied instantly.

"Hey, kids! Dinner!" Mrs. LaRusso suddenly called out from downstairs, alerting the three. "Oh, yay." Charlie smiled, pulling Sam with her quickly all the way to the kitchen. "I think you forgot someone!" Miguel called out, walking his way to where they were.

"No, I'm pretty sure I didn't." Charlie replied, instantly having to dodge an attack from Miguel when he got close enough to her. "You're so rude!" Charlie gasped.

"You could have damaged my money maker." Charlie glared, sending her own smack right back toward the boy. Miguel just caught it, jokingly glaring right back at the girl.

"Sit." Carmen laughed, ushering both teens to take their seats. Charlie moved across the table to the empty seat across from Sam, leaving the one beside her for Miguel to take. She quickly found herself between Johnny and Anthony, instantly noticing just how different Anthony looked from the last time she saw him.

"Jesus, I knew I hadn't been by in a few months but I didn't know you aged years since I last saw you, Ant!" Charlie spoke quietly, eyes widening toward the boy. "Ha, uh... yeah. You know... growth spirt." The boy replied awkwardly, quickly looking away from the older girl.

Charlie just made eye contact with Sam, watching the other girl roll her eyes. Charlie bit down on her lip to stop herself from laughing, him being awkward around her instead of snippy was new too.

"So how's business?" Carmen wondered, looking toward Mr. LaRusso. "Uh, the dealership's been the best it's been in years. It should practically be on autopilot by the time Sam takes it over. Right, Sam?" Mr. LaRusso smiled, lifting his wine glass to his face.

"Dad..." Sam replied, sending her dad a look. "You're gonna take over the dealership? That's awesome." Miguel smiled. "Well—" Sam tried, only to get cut off. "Nah, nah, nah, nah. It's just an inside joke. You see, when Sam was a little girl, she used to walk around the dealership like she owned the place. So..." Mr. LaRusso explained happily.

"Yeah, well... can you blame her? She was practically raised on that showroom floor. Almost born on it too." Mrs. LaRusso added. Charlie smiled lightly, enjoying the way Carmen laughed at the comment. It was nice to see Carmen becoming friends with one of Charlies mom's good friends, Charlie was really happy to see the little circle growing.

"Hey, whatever Sam wants to do with her life, that's entirely up to her. If she decides to go to school nearby, maybe get her MBA. USC, UCLA, I'm just saying... it's all icing on the cake." Mr. LaRusso explained.

Charlie watched Johnny and Miguel's faces drop slightly, even Carmen's doing the same thing. She understood immediately, options like those weren't exactly easily accessible. Sam was really lucky with what her family had, and lucky that she could consider any option she wanted.

"So, Miguel, how's school going?" Mrs. LaRusso wondered, sensing a bit of a drop from the non-LaRusso members of the dinner. "Uh, good. Uh, great actually." Miguel smiled.

"Straight A's this semester." Carmen added, extremely proud of her son. "Wow." Mrs. LaRusso smiled. "Yes, see a total nerd." Johnny added, though it was obvious he was proud of the boy too.

"See, with grades like that you can go anywhere you want." Mr. LaRusso smiled. "Yeah. I'd, uh, like to go to Stanford." Miguel admitted. "That's a pretty impressive school." Mr. LaRusso replied, eyes glued to the boy.

"Yeah, I think it's like number six in the country. The campus is beautiful." Miguel gushed. Charlie smiled, happy to see the way Miguel's eyes lit up at the idea. "It's definitely a top choice. But that tuition, wow. We're also thinking about Santa Monica College, right Miguel? Save some money, live at home, then see where we go from there." Carmen added, explaining the more logistical approach.

Charlie made quick eye contact with Miguel, sending the boy a small smile when she saw the way his dropped. "SMC's great too. It's right by the beach. Have you checked out their campus?" Mr. LaRusso wondered.

"No, actually, I-I-I haven't." Miguel replied quickly, reaching to add some of the salad in front of him onto his plate. But right as he did so his hand hit Mr. LaRussos glass of wine, sending the glass onto his plate and the wine inside onto Mrs LaRusso.

Miguel immediately jumped up, looking toward Mr. LaRusso anxiously. "Oh, oh! Mr. LaRusso, shit! Ah, I mean I'm sorry!"

"No, don't worry about it. Please. Just a little wine. Right?" Mr. LaRusso replied, hoping to wipe the wine off of him as quickly as he could. Charlie sighed, just thankful his shirt already matched the wines color.

"Uh... Charlie! What about you, sweetheart? Any thoughts on college yet?" Mrs. LaRusso wondered, hoping to pull focus away from what had just happened. "Um... I haven't really thought about it too much in terms of location. It would be cool to pick up track or soccer or something and see if I can get a scholarship for a good school that way. Otherwise I'll just have to see what's cheep enough to go to without too much debt." The girl spoke honestly, awkwardly looking around the table.

"Getting scholarships for doing college sports is smart. You can pretty much wipe tuition away at times just for being an athlete at a school. Have you joined the track team already?" Mr. LaRusso wondered, looking the girls way.

"Not yet but my soccer coach has basically been begging me to join since I was a freshman. I'm gonna talk to her soon about it." Charlie replied. "That sounds like a good plan, sweetheart." Mrs. LaRusso smiled.

When the night was coming to an end, it was time to head back to Miguel's and Charlie found herself laughing as Sam carried her on her back, walking the other girl to the door behind Mr. LaRusso and Johnny.

"Don't drop me." Charlie warned, wrapping her legs tight around her friend. "Oh, please. You'd barely feel it." Sam replied jokingly, only laughing when Charlie held on tighter. "If I go down you're going down with me." Charlie promised.

"So, still okay with me taking the Eagle Fangs tomorrow?" Mr. LaRusso confirmed, shaking Johnnys hand. "Yeah. I had some ideas on how to get your kids' offense up to snuff." Johnny replied, worrying Charlie on what exactly he'd ask them to do. "Mmm-hmm." Mr. LaRusso nodded.

"Make sure all that defense doesn't turn you into a cream puff." Johnny spoke, pointing at Miguel. "Ha-ha." Charlie smirked, pointing a finger the boys way. Miguel just shook his head, ignoring the girl.

"Tomorrow is gonna be great. As long as sensei over here brings everyone back in one piece." Mr. LaRusso noted. "He'd better." Charlie spoke. "No promises." Johnny replied, smiling lightly. "Ah, you'd better make a promise." Mr. LaRusso replied.

"Okay, down, boys." Carmen smiled, looking between the two men. Charlie hopped off Sam's back, giving the girl a hug as Johnny pointed at the LaRusso family. "Goodbye, LaRussos."

"Thank you." Miguel waved, following Johnny out. "Bye." Charlie spoke, waving to all three members of the LaRusso family still present for the departure, Anthony having left right after dinner.

Charlie quickly followed Miguel out, Carmen on the girls tail.

"Hey, and I'm serious. I better not see a scratch on my Miyagi-Dos." Mr. LaRusso spoke up before closing the door. "You'll be fine." Johnny spoke, directing his attention to Charlie.

"That does not make me feel better at all." Charlie replied, eyes widening. "You'll be fine." Johnny just spoke again, the same tone that was telling Charlie she in fact would not be as fine as he was promising.

"I know my rights." Charlie shot back, getting into the back of the car a moment later.

———————

Charlie did not understand where Johnny was taking the group as they climbed flight after flight of stairs. He wasn't exactly being helpful, and with all the teens lugging their bags as well, no one was having a good time.

"Where is he taking us?" Nate wondered, the group all stopping for a moment to catch their breath. Charlie had begun to feel it a bit in her legs, but she was just happy she'd worked up enough muscle from running all the time for this to not be killing her.

She could see from the way Demetri almost used her as a human arm rest that he was not in the same boat.

"Nowhere good." Demetri panted out, taking huge breaths. "I heard he drowned a kid in a pool trying to teach him how to kick, and that was before he sicced a rabid dog on Eli. This does not bode well."

"Let's go, Miyagis. Move your asses!" Johnny yelled from the destination, only giving Charlie hope that the stairs would end soon.

She quickly moved out from under Demetri, leading the way with Sam as she kept her pace all the way to the top.

Once everyone was up, Charlie watched Johnny kick the door in front of them open, leading the teens onto the roof of the building. She seriously did not understand how this would help them with their offense.

He led them to the very edge of the roof, everyone nervously looking down at the three old mattresses semi stacked on top of each other. "Oh God. I'm tired of being right." Demetri frowned, everyone taking steps back from the edge together before their eyes all moved to Johnny.

"What are we doing here?" Sam wondered, trying to see if what they were seeing was truly what was going on. Charlie frowned, eyes moving to Johnny quickly. She knew the man was crazy, but she didn't think he was insane until now.

"When an eagle's hungry, it doesn't hesitate. It'll dive down at 100 miles an hour to snatch its prey. It doesn't wait around for a fish to jump in its feet." Johnny spoke, walking back and forth in front of the group. "Talons." Demetri corrected.

"It's not talent. It's instinct. An eagle knows it has to make the first move. If you want to beat Cobra Kai in the All Valley, you gotta break yourself of this wait-and-see crap." Johnny continued, clearly mishearing Demetri but going with it anyways. "And how exactly are we gonna do that?" Sam countered, looking at the man curiously.

"You're gonna jump from this roof to that one." Johnny finally admitted, everyone's eyes widening in shock. "Oh, so you're crazy crazy." Charlie spoke, feeling the urge to not do that.

"What? Are you crazy?" Sam gasped, a new sense of fear now coursing through her. "That building is, like, five Nate's away and we're at least 14 Nate's high." Demetri added, looking toward Nate for a moment to quickly do his calculations.

"Please don't use me as a system of measurement." Nate sighed.

"Quiet!" Johnny yelled, bringing the focus back to himself. "If you wanna be an eagle, first you gotta learn how to fly. And you can't do that unless you jump." Johnny explained.

"You get told to jump and see how you like it." Charlie mumbled, crossing her arms over her chest. "What if we fall?" Abe wondered, pointing to the very obvious, as Demetri pointed out, 14 Nate's drop between the two buildings.

"That's what the mattresses are for." Johnny replied easily. "And if we miss the mattresses?" Demetri countered, both shocked that this was even something Johnny was serious about and in fear of his life.

"Try not to." Johnny answered honestly. "All right, who's first?" He then wondered, watching as everyone instantly began avoiding his eye.

It was silent for a few moments before Johnny sighed, looking at the group again. "We're not leaving 'til someone jumps. Let's go. I'll wait."

"Then I guess you'll be waiting a long time. 'Cause we're not jumping." Sam decided, walking away from the man as the rest of the team followed. Charlie sighed, looking toward Johnny for a moment before just turning around and following the rest of her team to sit down away from the edge.

She'd honestly been excited for his lesson, to finally see what it was like on his team. But this was another level of scary he hadn't even asked his actual team to do for him.

She'd just gotten over the mental block around karate, she wasn't about to throw herself into it until she saw it was possible. And Johnny wasn't making a good case for the activity.

It felt like they'd been up there forever as Charlie sat beside Sam on some old wood. She'd ignored as Johnny set up some type of step near the edge, her head resting on Sam's shoulder as she watched the girl text away on her phone.

"What's the problem, LaRusso? Don't tell me you're scared of heights." Johnny suddenly wondered, walking up to the two. "You too, Charlie. What's got you girls so freaked out?" He continued, eyes moving to the other girl as well.

"I'm not scared." Sam sighed. "Then what is it? Worried you're gonna muss up your hair?" Johnny shot back. "My dad wouldn't want us doing this." Sam replied, sitting up slightly as she looked at the man.

"And I'm pretty sure Carmen and my mom wouldn't be too pleased if I came back with two broken legs. Neither would my soccer coach." Charlie added, figuring if he was gonna ask her than she'd throw Carmen in his face as a surefire way to get the man off her back. When she was ready she'd do it, but that time wasn't today.

"Oh, gimme a break. You do everything your mommy and daddy tell you to? If they told you to jump off a bridge, would you? And Charlie, I'm sure your coach would love to know you were a badass and completed the challenge." Johnny spoke, clearly avoiding the Carmen aspect of it all.

"Mmm. Yeah, I'm pretty sure she would not react that way actually." Charlie replied instantly. "You're telling me to jump off a building." Sam stated, going back to Johnnys question about the bridge. "Yeah, onto another building." Johnny sassed back.

"Look, all I'm trying to do is help you doormats survive the All Valley." Johnny sighed. "Counter argument; if we listen to you then we're acting like doormats by giving into sensei peer pressure. But saying no is actually proving the opposite point you're trying to make." Charlie reasoned, staring at the man before her.

"Uh— stop trying to confuse me." Johnny shot back, waving his hand around. "Logic confuses you?" Charlie wondered in return, scrunching up her eyebrows.

"If we do your training, I don't think we'll survive the afternoon. Look, we came here with an open mind, but this is dangerous." Sam spoke calmly. "Yeah, well, I know what I'm doing." Johnny mumbled back.

"Do you? Because based on your track record, you don't have the best judgement." Sam shot back. "Oh, you wanna talk judgement? How about smashing into my Firebird and driving off with your girlfriends? You wanna explain that?" Johnny asked in response.

Sam sent Charlie a small look, a bit confused on why that question was only directed her way when she knew they were both in the car. Charlie just looked away, bouncing her leg up and down uncomfortably.

"I wasn't even driving. I was in the backseat." Sam just replied, figuring she wouldn't throw Charlie into this and would ask about it later. "And how about showing up to my place drunk, causing your dad to kick down my door? I'm guessing that wasn't your fault either." Johnny immediately shot back.

"I'm a teenager who's made a couple of mistakes. You're a 50-something-year-old man who lives alone, drinks all day, and clearly hasn't figured out his own life." Sam suddenly snapped, standing up to stare Johnny in the face as she spoke.

Charlie's eyes widened, not expecting Sam to go at him that hard. It wasn't like he didn't deserve it, but she'd never thought Sam would be the one to do it. If anything she thought she'd explode on him sooner than anyone else with how often she was forced around the man.

Johnny just quietly nodded for a moment, breathing in deep. "I figured out one thing for sure. If I did everything my parents wanted me to do, I'd be wearing a suit and tie in some worthless job while I waited out the clock. I didn't want that. And now I get to do what I love every damn day. I get to try to help kids like you find their own way. If you wanna sit in the back seat your whole life, go right ahead. It's no sweat off my back."

With that he walked off, leaving Sam standing there sadly. Charlie watched in silence as the girl just sat back down, quickly wrapping her arms around Sam and letting the girl lean on her as she considered what had just been said to her.

Even Charlie had to admit, it was a damn good message being sent their way. Even if the original delivery was a bit off.

———————

"So no one wants to fly? You all just want to stay in the nest. Pathetic!" Johnny screamed, angrily looking around at the group. It was already past 5 and no one had jumped, so he was tired of it. "Alright, fine. You win. You can bore Cobra Kai into submission." He continued.

Johnny looked around as everyone just avoided his eye, frowning. "You all failed. Grab your crap and let's go."

Charlie turned her head to Sam as she grabbed her stuff, looking at the girl worriedly. "You okay?" Sam just sighed, nodding. "Yeah. Just got a text from my dad telling me to not do anything he wouldn't do."

"Jeez." Charlie frowned, picking her bag up and walking beside Sam as the team all went to leave.

"Looks like you got what you wanted." Johnny spoke, looking at Sam for a moment before moving past her. Charlie wanted nervously as Sam suddenly stopped walking, eyeing the jump.

She threw her stuff down without word, taking multiple steps back. "Oh, shit." Charlie cursed, anxiously watching Sam set herself before sprinting forward, not allowing herself another moment to think about it as she sprinted toward the platforms Johnny had added to create steps near the edge, jumping across.

Charlie grabbed Demetri's arm, feeling herself completely freak out as she watched Sam summersault up and turn back around to the group. She'd actually done it without falling to the ground, and it was awesome.

"Nice move, LaRusso!" Johnny smiled, nodding to the girl. He looked toward the rest of the group, adrenaline pumping. "Alright, who's next?"

A silence fell among the group as they all looked between each other anxiously. Charlie took in a breath, considering the pros and cons. She knew she had the speed, but she also knew it was about commitment. If she wasn't fully committed from start to finish she wouldn't have a chance at making it.

But if she could just go for it and succeed? She knew it would help flip a switch in her brain to allow herself to fully get back into the sport without fear. If she could jump across buildings, a little kick or punch here and there was nothing.

"I'll go." The girl decided, sending Johnny a small nod when he looked her way excitedly. "Just commit from start to finish, Charlie. Use your skills to your advantage." Johnny pepped.

Charlie nodded, backing up far enough to have a good running start before she took in a deep breath, staring forward with only one goal in mind.

And suddenly she was running, ignoring every impulse in her mind to stop as she sprinted forward, using the steps Johnny had created as she made it to the edge and pushed forward with all her power, legs flying out in a running motion as she felt her heart drop.

And then suddenly her feel were on the ground again and she had to slow her momentum and stop herself from continuing to run.

Charlie turned around excitedly, feeling both like throwing up and doing it again. It was exhilarating, and as she watched the proud smile on Johnnys face she knew she'd made the right choice.

Sam quickly jumped at the girl, wrapping her in an excited hug. "We did it!" Sam smiled. "Fuck yeah we did." Charlie laughed in return, hugging back.

After a couple more Miyagi-Dos made the jump, Johnny figured out a plan for the rest of them. They quickly set up a barricade at the edge, Johnny having everyone who didn't want to jump just sprint forward and commit like they would jump, but instead of going forward they're just jumping into the air and land.

It seemed like a fair compromise he was willing to make after getting even just a few teens to actually take the leap. And by the time everyone was done, they felt a new fire inside of them that they hadn't before.

And it was all thanks to Johnny Lawrence.

———————

"So? What's the plan for today? Something else life threatening?" Sam wondered, everyone standing outside of Miyagi-Do that next day. "Oh yeah, but now you're ready. Remember, if you get put in a scary situation, you don't back down. You gotta grow a pair. Of legs. To jump." Johnny answered, though the end of his message got a bit specific.

Charlie smiled lightly, happily even watching Demetri nod at the man's words with a newfound confidence. "It's okay. We understand. Sensei." Sam smiled, sharing a small nod with the man before them all.

"All right. Let's get to work." Johnny instructed, leading everyone into Miyagi-Do for their next day of training.

They walked in to find Eagle Fang already inside, Mr. LaRusso putting some type of headband around Miguel's forehead before the two faced each other, bowing.

Charlie smiled lightly, happy to see Miguel finally bonding with Mr. LaRusso in a whole new way. She'd heard the night before about them fixing his moms car together, truly showing where that relationship was going.

Charlie walked beside Demetri to join everyone in Eagle Fang as they watched, all now ready to continue their training with new perspectives.

Charlie looked to her side when she noticed herself standing beside Hawk, the boy looking her way as well. She smiled lightly, finally feeling all the fear she'd felt around him disappear.

She guessed that's what happened after jumping across buildings, some things just didn't seem that serious anymore.

"Hey." He spoke quietly, excited to see the girl really looking his way again. "Hi." Charlie replied, just as quiet.

Maybe, just maybe, they could start being friends again. It didn't sound like such a bad idea to Charlie anymore.

And somehow, though part of her hated it, she had Johnny Lawrence to thank for that.

anyways I'm excited to re-introduce you all to the charlie and eli friendship era... it'll be exciting to see where that goes 👀
