I walked out onto the deck to see my husband in the swinging hammock, nose stuffed in a book.
"Whatcha reading love?" I ask, he looked up at me and beckoned me over. I walked over and he pulled my down beside him. We swing a few times almost falling out but soon regained balance.
"The biography of Alexander Hamilton" he answered showing me the cover, I furrowed my brow.
"Why did you pick this?" I ask placing my head on his shoulder, he chuckled and kissed my head.
"When I went to the library, a young girl came around the corner. Only 13 years old, at first I thought she was lost but then she told me she was a volunteer" he started telling me.
"How is this relevant to you reading The biography of Alexander Hamilton?" I ask, he puts a finger to me lips and I laugh. My husbands a goof.
"I asked her for the biggest book she's got and she gave me this. I didn't think I was much of a history guy at the time but she looked like you so I couldn't say no" he says, kissing me gently.
"She looked like me?" I ask, he nods.
"Like you but with blond hair and 13, same freckles and nose. If I wasn't your husband I would say she's your daughter" he said. "Unless there's something you want to tell me?" Lin says wiggling his eyebrows. I laugh at him and smack his chest.
"I don't have a secret 13 year old daughter Lin... I'm not that cool" I say with a sigh.
"I beg to differ I mean...you married me....by choice" he says, I look up.
"Yeah, I did" I say with a content smile.
"Something was a little off about her though" he said, I noticed the drop by the corners of his lips.
"Off?" I question, he nods.
"When I reached out to shake her hand she flinched briefly before shaking it" he said, I frowned.
"Lin that's a sign of abuse or someone that's been touched" I say, he nods.
"I know V...." he said. To be honest, the thought consumed me for a little while.
I walked into the old library, I scanned around looking for the young girl. I walked around the whole Library looking for her.
I searched around and around. I was standing under an old loft, it was dark up there.
At the time I didn't know that she laid up there surrounded by her paintings. Tears were falling down her little cheeks and bruises covered her small frame...
Vanessa sat across from Genevieve, she noticed how long she'd been painting and decided to take her out for dinner. She looked at her closely, we both have chubby cheeks, little noses and freckled faces. Genevieve slept with braids so her hair was wavy like Vanessa's.
The young male server that was serving them came over. "Can I getcyou anything else?" He asked, Vanessa noticed him staring at Genevieve and smirking.
"That's it for now, please leave" Vanessa said glaring at the boy, he left angrily.
"You okay V?" Genevieve asks, Vanessa nods.
"Yeah sorry just a little protective" she says, Genevieve nods.
"You must be a good mom then, better than mine was" Genevieve says finishing the last of her chicken, Vanessa smiled sadly.
"They made a mistake, leaving you alone. You're an awesome kid, an amazing daughter I'm sure" she says. Genevieve smiles.
"V... can I uh... can I take you somewhere?" Genevieve says, Vanessa nods.
The sixteen year old leads her down streets and into a small park. "My mom used to take me here" she says, Vanessa squeezes her arm.
"Genevieve let's take a picture" Vanessa says, Genevieve nods.
"I'll take a picture of you and your daughter for you" a lady no older then 60 says.
If I wasn't your husband I would say she's your daughter"...
"Thanks" Vanessa says handing her phone to the women. Genevieve was going to apologize but it didn't seem like Vanessa minded...
"Here we are" Genevieve says, the two are standing infront of two graves. "Mother, Father, this is V. She's very important" She says.
"Genevieve... why did you bring me here Hun?" Vanessa asks. Genevieve sighs.
"I've never brought anyone here, I would've brought Lin too but he's in rehearsal. My brother isn't the nicest person since they died and he never visits with me. I just didn't want to be alone, why can't I be professional" Genevieve says wiping a tear.
"Hun, Lin and I aren't just employers, especially not me. Come to me and I'm glad you brought me here" Vanessa says.
When I look back at the photo now I see how that women thought she was my daughter. And truth is, I don't mind it know, and I didn't mind it then...
