Chapter Seven: Finding The Prisoner of Hope
Happiness is what I live for. You get a taste of it now and then, and I guess that's what makes it special. Even if everything seems to go wrong, there's always this tiny light in the back of your head that springs into action when you need it the most.
After last night, I feel that's what happened to me. A smile is etched on my face every second and I feel accomplished. My head is held high as I walk through the halls of high school and my posture is noticeably better.
Everything seems to be turning in a good direction for me. Hard work pays off sometimes, doesn't it?
With that thought still fresh in my mind I accidentally bump into someone at my locker. I look up to see a good friend, June. She's been there for me for as long as I could remmeber, which makes my smile go even bigger, if that's possible.
"You seem to be in a good mood today. You know what would make you even happier? My great news!"
I cock my head signaling for her to go on.
"Well, I had a great idea. Maybe, just maybe, we could figure out who puts those notes on people's lockers! I heard from a group of friends that they had a clue to her/ his identity. Wouldn't that be great?"
My eyes go wide in surprise and I try to tell her something, but without success.
"I can tell you're really excited! In all seriousness, I don't really like this person that much. I mean, who gets involved in someone's problems? I know they're just trying to make other people happy, but to me it's just plain nosey. Honestly, that's why I want to do this so badly. Sorry for getting so deep! I didn't mean to do that!"
I jump back, shocked at her outburst and I look down at my toes, contemplating everything she's said.
June gasps and puts her hand to her mouth.
"I'm sorry, did I say something wrong? I'm so stupid; I can't believe I just did that. I mean, who am I to-"
I nod my head no, signaling her to quiet down.
"Y-you did n-nothing wrong." I almost whisper.
She jumps back slightly and she gasps.
Suddenly, out of no where, the bell rings and I take myself to the classroom I have to go to's back row to contemplate things. Whatever I do, I'm not going to let this affect my happiness. I'm certain that I'm on a pathway now to true happiness.
After school, I begin to wander around in my real life happy place. The bench that I sit on to think things over is straight ahead. I then walk towards it with bright eyes and a smile on my face. I entwine the roses next to me in my fingers and let out a sigh of bliss. Even with the new looming problem over my head, I still feel at home here.
Every successful decision I make is when I come here. Memories surge through my head as I'm interrupted by a girl walking in front of me with a lost expression on her face. She's pacing around and she's hugging her teddy bear close to her heart.
This sudden, rash decision comes to mind. Even though I'm probably not capable of succeeding, it's worth a try. First try, here it goes.
I open my mouth to be disappointed with the lack of words coming out of it.
A wave of determination sprouts and I try again. I continuously fail, until something goes my way.
"E-excuse me? A-are you lost, sweetie?"
She jumps, but she sighs of relief quickly after.
" Yes, please help us! Mr. Beary and I got lost and we can't seem to find mommy!"
I smile and say,"D-don't worry. I'll get you and Bear-"
"That's Mister Beary to you!"
I feel tears prickling and say,"O-of course, I-I'm sorry."
"It's okay, stupid. You don't have to be so shy."
I look down at my feet and nod, feeling my determination slip away.
"Can you take us to the police guy over there? I just saw him walk over here." She says with the teddy bear swinging in her arms.
I grasp her arm gently and walk towards the police officer.
He says,"Hello there. Is anything wrong?"
Her little kid voice pips up and says,"Yeah, Mister Beary and I can't find mommy."
"Darling, is this your mom? She's been looking for her kid all day." He says, pointing to a plump woman in the distance talking to another group of police officers.
"Mommy!" She yells with a smile.
"I guess that answers my question." He says with a grin.
The woman comes running over to her daughter and engulfs her in a hug. She says words of praise towards the policeman and then sees me standing there awkwardly.
"Who are you? Did you help my daughter?" She asks while shaking my hand.
Her daughter says,"Yeah. She helped me find you!"
She runs over to me and hugs me tightly.
"Thank you so, so much for helping us find mommy! You made me really happy. I love you so much!"
I gasp, not expecting her to say that. I whisper a thank you, and hug her back. As she walks away with her mom, I wave to her goodbye.
Suddenly, the policeman speaks,"You did a great thing today; It was very honorable. I can tell that you're extremely shy, since my son's like that. Good luck on trying to get over anxiety. I know you'll be able to do it."
I smile and I'm filled with happiness.
"T-thanks."
As he walks away, I realize that even strangers can make someone's day. They can fill you with true happiness and encourage you to conquer fear and achieve your dreams. The tongue can be a sword, painful and deadly, but the right words can save a life from unhappiness.
