Chapter Two

Derrick greeted her as she crawled into the car. "Hey kid, rough day?" Gilly shrunk into the backseat. You don't know the half of it. The teen wouldn't even look her older brother in the eyes. Being closed off worked to get her family to stop asking questions. The drive home was silent. When they got home, only Edsel was there. "Where's Ludwig?" Gilly asked. "He's over at a friend's house." It was Monday, so Derrick would be making dinner and Edsel had dish duty. Arik, the eldest of the siblings, was working the night shift and wouldn't be home in time for dinner. While she was cleaning up for dinner, Gilly's train of thought became a little more twisted. Why were they doing this to her? She had always done her best to keep her nose clean and not cause trouble. The comments about her albinism were the worst, because she couldn't do anything about it. Finally, dinner was ready.

Family time was a big part of the Beilschmidt family. Dinner was no exception to this. Gilly did her best to avoid the topic of school. The later they found out about her in school suspension, the better. "So, have you made any friends at your new school?" Before, Gilly had gone to school with her cousin, Mathias, and his friend, Alfred. Arik got a job on the other side of town and required that he move as well, leaving Ludwig and Gilly in new schools. "It's going great, may I be excused?" She asked while putting her fork down from mashing up her food. "Sure kid. You feeling alright?" Edsel asked, clearly worried. "I'm fine, I just have a lot of homework and I'm very tired."
