Chapter 8

"Settling in will probably take you some time. I'm just across the corridor if you need help, Sir", said Hermione coming to a halt in front of the door opposite her chambers.

"Actually, Professor McGonagall told me to move in with you after extending your room so that I could help you better."

He stared down at her, challenging her to disagree, but she knew better and instead turned on her heel and went to her door with him in tow.

They silently walked in, trying not to disturb the babies sleeping in their beds.

"Well, they're asleep for now. I trust you still know the rooms and where you can find everything?", she asked him, going to her closet and choosing some clothes to change into.

She went into the bathroom, changed, brushed her teeth and threw her hair into a messy ponytail. Once she went back into her bedroom she saw that her Professor had already extended her quarters and conjured a bed and a drawer and was about to put some of his clothes in it.

"I think they should arrive anytime now to fetch Blaise. We should probably wake him up and let the other two sleep. I don't know whether they would go back to sleep without making that much fuss."

Hermione looked at the three sleeping toddlers in their conjured beds before bending down and carefully picking him up. He didn't do much but turn his head and open his eyes for a brief second before falling back asleep.

"Seems as though he's quite exhausted", said Professor Snape shortly before there was knocking at her door. He took the boy from her, and she went to answer the door.

"Nev, Astoria, come in. He's very sleepy, he shouldn't be making that much fuss tonight."

"Thank you. He's never that much fuss — he's more of a shy baby boy. Sleep well, Herms. Good night, Sir", said Neville, taking the baby and going out of the door again with Astoria in tow.

Once Hermione had closed the door and turned around she saw her professor rummaging in his drawers and with a pile of clothes he went into the bathroom. She sighed and went to bed reading her potions book again.

After some minutes her professor entered the room again wearing only a black T-shirt and long black pyjama bottoms. On his way to his bed, he stopped to see how the babies were faring and then proceeded to his bed.

"I do wish you a good night's rest, Miss Granger," said the dark yet smooth voice of her professor just after she turned off the lights.

"I wish you the same, Sir."

"Severus."

Her head turned around quickly, trying to make him out in the dark, but she failed.

"Excuse me?"

"You already called me Severus while I was a toddler and seeing as we are currently sharing chambers and babysitting your friends I think it is appropriate for you to call me Severus as long as we're alone."

That took Hermione off guard, and she didn't know what to say. After a while she went for: "Good night, Severus." and soon after that, she fell asleep.

Bodies everywhere. They were littering the floor. Bodies of friends, acquaintances, fellow students, order members. Their friends and families were sitting next to them, most of them sobbing over their loss.

The hall was eerily quiet save for the muffled sobs that were to be heard everywhere.

She looked around herself, saw the many faces with emotionless expressions, all covered in blood and dirt.

She saw Lavender Brown, her throat torn by Greyback.

Colin Creevey.

Fred.

Remus and Tonks with their hands barely touching.

She looked across the hall, searching for one dead body in particular.

When she didn't find him, she turned on her heel and ran in search of him. She ran across the grounds. She ran as though her life depended on it and from afar she stopped the Whomping Willow's frantic movements and entered the shack.

He lay there in a pool of his own blood, his throat torn into shreds the blood still oozing from it, his skin impossibly pale with his eyes closed since he gave his memories to his former best friend's son.

This sight made her scream out in horror. Someone shook her.

She woke with a start.

"Hermione, wake up. It's just a dream. Wake up."

A soft voice was muttering when she woke. Someone was shaking her shoulder as her eyes shot open. She looked around wide-eyed. Directly to her right, she saw her professor kneeling next to her bed with a concerned expression on his face.

"Professor?" Hermione felt light-headed and slightly disoriented.

"Yes. I had to wake you. You were thrashing around in your sleep and had a nightmare or so it seemed."

She wasn't able to respond to that as one of the babies began to cry at that moment. Hermione wanted to get up, but he put a hand on her arm to hold her back.

"You go and freshen up, it's already five to six. I'll be caring for them, don't worry."

She looked between his face and his hand on her arm trying to process everything. After a while, he took it away and went to tend to the babies. Hermione got up and walked into the bathroom on slightly shaky legs.

She stepped out of the shower, towelled herself off and accioed a new set of clothes in which she then dressed. She quickly dried her hair and brushed her teeth. Slowly but refreshed she stepped back into her bedroom to see her professor walking around with two sleeping babies on his arms rocking them gently. Hermione couldn't help but smile at that. She went to him and took Harry from his right arm to help him. The boy instantly woke up crying which, in turn, woke Baby-Draco. They both were crying relentlessly and Hermione and Severus were walking and rocking them all the time until Hermione had enough and sent for a house-elf to bring them all food.

Once they were all fed Severus asked: "Is it just me or did they grow a bit?"

Hermione eyed the two boys and had to say that they indeed had. Their clothes were a bit too small at the moment, and so she had to make them bigger.

Hermione was packing her school bag with her charms books when someone said: "Mama!"

She turned and looked around, searching for the source. The young black-haired boy with emerald green eyes was standing in his crib, reaching his arms towards her. Bewildered she looked over to Severus, who was curiously watching her and the boy now. She went and picked him up, carrying him around the room.

He pointed his small pointer finger to Severus when he said: "Dada!"

Now it was Severus who looked at the boy wide-eyed and disbelieving.

Hermione just smiled and went on walking.

Soon, Draco started to cry out in search of attention.

"Dwayco!", squealed Baby-Harry when Hermione passed Severus walking around with his blonde godson.

The blonde in turn pointed his finger to the other baby boy saying: "Hawwy!"

As the children were laughing joyously, the two adults looked at each other curiously before communicating silently.

They both stepped up to the floo and went straight to the headmistress' office.
