Chapter 4
Completely breathless because she carried two babies with her, she arrived at the headmistress's office. Heaving a deep breath, she knocked on the door with her foot, as her hands were full.
"Come in."
The door opened magically and she went in. The office was looking just the way it was before the war with each of Dumbledore's inventions standing around.
"Miss Granger, shouldn't you be in class? And are those babies? Why do you carry two babies with you when you are supposed to be in potions class this very minute?"
Hermione gulped and stepped up to her professor's desk.
"I was there, Professor. There was an accident. We were brewing ageing potions as revision and somehow Pansy's potion blew up. Everyone was transformed into babies save for Astoria, Neville and me. Even Professor Snape is a baby — it's a disaster! I sent Astoria and Neville to the infirmary with the others."
Hermione talked as fast as she could, which resulted in her teacher understanding next to nothing.
"Now, now. Calm down and take a seat. Ginger biscuit?", asked the older woman.
Hermione politely declined and started explaining again.
"We were brewing ageing potions as revision. I just finished mine and he praised me. That shocked everyone, understandably. Suddenly Pansy's cauldron bubbled and the turquoise fog was wafting throughout the room, making it hard to see for everyone. Professor Snape shouted that we should get down. Then someone took me down and threw his cloak over me and saved me from this potion. A loud bang followed and after some time I got up, as did Astoria and Neville. We heard a baby crying and one after another found them all turned into babies. We all took two babies and went our ways. I came here with Harry and Professor Snape and sent the others to see Madame Pomfrey."
Her professor seemed to be unable to completely wrap her head around this as she had to ask again.
"So, you want to tell me that due to Miss Parkinson's potion five students plus a teacher were turned into babies?"
The brown-haired witch nodded.
"Let's go and see Poppy now. We need to sort this out," said Minerva McGonagall guiding her student to the hospital wing taking baby Harry from her.
"Ah, there they come. Here, lay them down here next to the others. I already checked them. It seems as though they really are babies. There's no sign that they ever were adults. Let me check Harry and Severus though, one can never be too sure", greeted the medi- witch babbling and already checking on Harry.
"Okay, no. He's a baby, too. Now Severus."
The baby boy who just woke up stared at her something that resembled a scowl on his face.
Oh no, Poppy. No need for that, I'm here and mentally really well. I'm in no way anything near a baby, at least not mentally though my body seems to be betraying me. Parkinson, I knew why I never liked you.
The black-eyed boy was so deep in thought that he didn't really take notice of Madame Pomfrey's examination.
"OK, so it seems as though Severus is the only one with his brain and memory still intact."
You don't say, old crone. Of course, my brain is intact. Maybe you should check yours, you seem a bit crazy to me at the moment.
"What should we do? We can't just let them crawl around", said Minerva, believing herself to be in one of those muggle prankster shows.
"I wouldn't risk trying a correctly brewed ageing potion on the students as their minds couldn't handle it, they will have to wait until they developed enough to try. Severus is another case. He seems to be of a sound mind, or what could pass for one. The only problem is that we don't have any in storage," said Poppy.
Or what could pass for a sound mind?! And I thought you were one of those few humans I could agree on talking to once in a while. Pah. You'll see just how sound my mind is once I'm ME again, old crone.
Minerva nodded in understanding.
"Who will care for the babies? They can't all stay here, and I very well can't just give them to the teachers," said the old headmistress definitely stressed.
"We could take them in. I mean, we can manage that somehow. I can brew the ageing potion, and we would have Professor Snape back, so that would be a first step in the right direction. And once he's himself again, each of us has two babies to look after which should be manageable", said Hermione searching for affirmation from the others who nodded their heads yes.
The headmistress sighed but agreed. "So, let's suppose that Professor Snape won't be a baby much longer, still we need to sort out who will watch over whom."
"Astoria, could you watch over Pansy and Draco? Blaise and Ron could be staying with Neville and so Harry and Professor Snape could be staying with me for the time being. Once the professor is an adult, Draco can come to me. Is that fine with everyone?", asked Hermione.
"That would be acceptable I guess", confirmed the headmistress.
"Professor Snape and Mister Potter can stay here with me for the time you will be brewing the potion for our little professor here. Just drop them off by tomorrow as it's too late to start today," said the medi- witch smirking at the black-eyed boy sitting there on the bed before her.
Just wait, I will have my revenge. Go on making fun of me, and you'll regret it more and more. If only my body would do what I say... Never mind, once I'm an adult again she will not be going anywhere without having to fear my wrath.
"How long will it take for the others to become normal again?", asked the headmistress.
"We will have to wait until the potion starts to wear off. This may take from a week to a couple of months. We will just have to wait, Minnie."
"I suggest you all go to your dorms to get them to bed before they all wake up", said Professor McGonagall dismissing them all.
They all knew something was off by her tone and quickly gathered all the children and went down to the dungeons.
They hadn't even left the infirmary completely when they heard Minerva McGonagall snapping at the medi- witch.
"Minnie?! You dare call me Minnie when students are here, you must be kidding me!"
"Calm down, I am surely allowed to call my best friend by her nickname and honestly, you could do worse."
"You can call me that in private but not in front of students! Just you wait, this isn't over, Poppy!"
A clearly infuriated headmistress stormed out of the hospital wing leaving a chuckling Poppy Pomfrey in her wake.
Down in the dungeons, everyone was seated on the couch or an armchair.
"Now, I think we should make everything here a bit better suited for babies, you know, clothing, toys, beds and such things", said Astoria looking down at her sleeping baby friends.
Neville nodded and looked over at Hermione hoping that she had an idea how to manage that.
She sighed before answering. "Go search for some clothing you don't need for the moment so that I can transform that into baby clothing and beds for them. I will go to the classroom to gather the things we left behind if one of you could watch over them", said Hermione motioning towards Harry and Snape who were both asleep now.
"Sounds like a plan. Let's say that we all meet here in ten minutes?", said Astoria getting up.
Astoria and Neville sat in their common room in front of a pile of various articles of clothing such as shirts, trousers and socks as Hermione re-entered the room with her arms full of school robes and 6 wands in her left hand. She set everything down and began to transform clothing so Astoria and Neville could dress the others.
Finally, Hermione went up to her room with Harry and Snape setting them down on her bed. Then she searched for some old shirts that didn't fit her any more and transfigured them into baby sleeping clothes.
She made sure that nothing was black because she thought that no baby should wear black even if it was the dour potions professor who always wore black.
With a spell, she transfigured the baby clothing Poppy gave them into something they could sleep in and took two overused quills of hers and transfigured them into two cribs laying the children down. Then she grabbed her nightclothes and went into the bathroom to change and brush her teeth.
Re-entering her bedroom she was being stared at by a small boy with big black eyes.
"Well, hello there, Professor. Awake again I see."
She smiled at him.
His face went from blank to sporting a dark look immediately. He scowled at her which made her laugh. As intimidating he was when he did this as an adult the cuter it was whilst he was barely older than one year physically. Hermione would even say he looked quite cute sitting there attempting to cross his arms but failing miserably.
"What's up, professor? Don't you like blue? It is a dark shade, you know", said Hermione while his scowl was only getting darker.
Don't overdo it, Granger. I will have my revenge. If you don't want me to flip out, take me out of this crib this instant!
The professor was seething inside but his body still didn't do what he wanted it to do. With his voice not working he tried to get her attention otherwise.
He began to box against the bars of his bed, later even attempting to kick them.
At first, his student was just standing there rather amused before she took action.
She laughed which caused him to stare at her and if looks could kill she would have been dead four times already.
Only then she took him out of there, transfiguring the crib into a smaller version of her own bed and laying the professor down again. She watched his face lighting up a bit, something akin to contentment taking over his face.
Now, Granger, was that so hard to do? You only need to use the brain in that beautiful head of yours. He thought not realizing what he just thought.
The young woman settled into her bed and turned off the light. "Good night, Harry, Professor Snape."
She fell asleep only seconds after.
