leo 9: searching
Phone dead Leo went back into the library to see if he'd missed Freddie in the frenzy of his first look. All he found were people whispering and avoiding eye contact. Freddie was no where to be found. Leo pushed his hair out of his face it wet from the sweat of running around. He thought it through and remembered Freddie often met Tim at the canteen.
Walking into the cavernous and crowded space that held the canteen was even less pleasant than the library. At least the library was already mostly silent, Leo's entrance into the canteen sucked the conversation out like it was a flame without oxygen. He ignored the looks and the way the whispers began to built agitated out of the silence. Focused on searching the room for Freddie, he lit up when someone shouted his name. It wasn't Freddie, but it was someone who might know where Freddie was and that gave Leo a burst of energy. He rushed over to where Tim and Nikki were standing waiting for him.
"Leo mate what are you doing here?"
"Looking for Freddie."
"He was here a while ago but uh..."
Tim turned to look at Nikki like he wasn't sure how what to say next. Leo knew what that meant.
"He saw it," Leo said.
"Yeah sorry you know what people are like they get bored."
"What happened?" Leo asked not really interested in a psychological discussion about what makes people do cruel things online.
"He seemed fine," Nikki insisted.
"Really."
Leo stared waiting for some piece of information.
"He really was fine then he went off to call you and he didn't come back we figured he was with you," Nikki said.
"Phones dead," Leo said gritting his teeth.
"He might have gone to your apartment?" Tim suggested.
Taking a breath Leo took off out of the canteen not bothering to listen as Nikki and Tim shouted after him. He hoped Sadie and Kye would keep Freddie busy without saying anything to upset him any further. He ran, back through over the fences and through the back door his building. The lift was waiting for him this time so he took it tapping his foot as it slow took him to his floor.
He didn't have to search when he entered his apartment the look on Sadie's face was enough to tell him Freddie wasn't here.
"He went to find you," Sadie said.
Rubbing his eyes, Leo thought for a second.
"Can I use your phone?"
"Sure," Sadie said handing it to him.
Pressing call Leo prayed to every deity he could think of hoping it would connect, but it didn't.
"What did he say?" Leo asked.
"He seemed—" Kye began but Sadie cut him off.
"— he asked where you were we said you'd gone to campus and he went to look for you."
Leo groaned, out loud. Stretching his legs a little before he turned to leave again. He knew Freddie's friends were at the canteen and if he found them he'd probably find Freddie.
