football and flirting

Freddie was late. He hadn't be able to find sleep until after three AM, and it had taken him three presses of the snooze button for him to wake enough to realize he was running late. Then he changed his jumper four times, because suddenly it mattered, and it felt like he hit every red light as he drove to campus. When he saw a text from Leo waiting his mind jumped to the worst conclusion in the horrid moments of uncertainty before he read it.

At the pitch when you get here, the text read.

Relief flooded Freddie and he smiled thinking about Leo in his shorts running around the field like some kind of high school jock. He shot off a reply saying he'd be there soon and decided he was calm enough to stop at the coffee van on his wait to the sports fields.

The morning sun was still finding its footing as Freddie stepped onto the dew covered grass of the field. It hadn't rained for a couple of weeks so the ground was a little dry but the dampness of winter made it feel wet.

Leo stood out in his black tracksuit in the middle of the blue green field. He had a soccer ball and he was bouncing it around like a juggling ball. Freddie's breath caught at the sight of him. His hair still damp from the shower, his jumper stretching across his broad back, the way he danced the ball across his body like it was part of him.

"Wow," he said to himself just as Leo spotted him.

The moment Leo saw Freddie something shifted. He lost control of the ball and it slipped away so quickly he had to run to catch it, when he turned back to Freddie he almost fell over his own feet. Freddie turned to hide his smile.

"Hey," he said as Leo reached him.

"Hey," Leo said smiling the special smile Freddie wanted to call his own.

"This is for you," Freddie said offering the coffee.

"Thanks," Leo said taking it without looking Freddie in the eye.

"Change of venue today?" Freddie asked.

"I thought you might want to kick the ball around a bit," Leo said still focused on Freddie's feet.

"Don't know mate you've got me at an unfair disadvantage," Freddie teased.

Leo finally looked up at Freddie's face and Freddie wanted to wipe the discomfort off his face with a kiss.

"I'm down," Freddie insisted. "But embarrassing admission, everything I know about soccer comes from that movie we had to watch in english. The one where the girl pretends to be a guy? It's got Channing Tatum in it."

The more he spoke the more Leo's features relaxed.

"We don't have to," Leo said softly.

"No no I wanna try," Freddie insisted. "Just go easy on me okay?"

A smile formed on Leo's face that Freddie could only describe as threatening. He took the coffee cup out of Freddie's hand placed it on the bench next to him. Leo then grabbed Freddie's hand and dragged him out on to the field.
