I'll describe the species for ya: (Warning: rather long story. You can skip if you're not interested. I'd appreciate it if you read, though)

Lonely souls are creatures, that don't have a place where they belong to, a memory or a will of their own. They often don't have a stable body either which means their body doesn't last long (about 5 weeks) and as soon as it dies, it'll disappear into dust, making the soul search for a new body. Often, the souls take over freshly dead bodies and eat away on their heart. Sometimes, when they are lucky, they find someone, who gives their body willingly to the soul and share it. That makes the overtaken body lasting several years (up to 15 years), but you gotta pay a high price:
They will be pushed back into the back of their mind and lose thier control over their body, letting the soul take over. These kind of lonely souls are called lost souls. These souls can keep the memories of the host-body, but as soon as the body dies, both lose thier memories and wander around as lonely souls again.
A lonely/lost soul is controlled by the so called Overmind, for having no will of their own. The Overmind consists of the minds of lost souls after their body died and lives in a lost soul that's unable to die. It has a schizophrenic personality and often decides to let the souls do things like killing, hurting and even suicide to amuse itself and distract itself form the constant pain that comes with so many personalities and characteristics. Its most obvious characteristic is its psychopathy, though, because most of the ones, that gave their body to lonely souls, where psychopathic, obsessed with the thought of living 300 years without thinking over the consequenses.

Lonely souls walk around with a describtion of themselves on a silver plaque that's attached to a string that's put around their neck. The describtion is written in English, Japanese or German.
It consists of one word and never changes, even if they take over a new body. The name of the soul is build from the description and also never changes. A lonely soul always has greyish skin and black or dark grey eyes with white pupils/irises:

If a soul takes over a body, the body deforms and takes over the soul's characteristics (such as build, face shape, eyes, teeth, hair colour, etc.). Only height, weight, clothing, hair length and gender of the body don't change. The soul can get itself new clothing though, if the Overmind wants it to. Other than that, the soul looks always the same after it takes over a body. A bodyless soul is often described as a black human-like creature whose body fades away from the lags down, but it's not confirmed.
If a lonely soul doesn't find a new body within 15 days or lets its body get killed (doesn't count if the body was already killed before it was taken over or if the body dies because the soul ate the heart away) it'll die. Other than that, a soul can't die without having survived (No, they don't live. They just survive) 300 years. They wander through the world withoutout a goal their whole life and do what their told to.
They usually carry around a weapon of the middle ages, like scythes, axes, swords, etc. Which they can hide within their body and which is only visible to humans outside their body.
Besides that, they cannot be noticed as lonely souls by humans. Without a body, they're invisible and invincible (you know what I mean) and with one, they look human to humans. Any other magical/fantasy creatures (like unicorns) can detect them easily, but can't hurt them, for they can only be killed by humans. Lonely souls don't often show their mouth for it's often larded with spiky teeth, the only thing that gives away to humans that they're not human. Only lost souls show theur theeth becasue they don't have spiky teeth.
