Chapter 18

Dawn couldn't process the words she had just read and she sure didn't have time when she heard the inhuman shriek that came from the other room.

It made sense, Flynn being able to get everyone out of La Morte but what didn't make sense, then, was how the Captain had gotten the wrong brother. He was a man of precision, of fact so there was no way that he'd gotten Walter and Flynn mixed up.

"Oh my god."

It clicked. And with that, she ran into the room where the two boys were lying, unconscious on the floor.

If she didn't get them to her room in the next five minutes, these boys weren't going to make it.

"George, I haven't got any time to joke around. I'll get Flynn but I need you to get Damon up into my table."

The grave expression on her face told him enough as he hauled Damon off of the floor and over his shoulder. Dawn did the same to Flynn, nearly breaking out into a sprint as she left the training room and ran  upstairs right into the medical room.

"Pull the second table from behind the curtain." she instructed, pointing behind the curtain to help out George.

A few months ago, she remembers having the Captain on this same bed after a small graze. He'd asked for Guy Teller, the fake 'Eagle's' dad. She left the room, thinking giving them some privacy would do them good.

She came back to administer a pain relief shot but with the serious expressions on their faces, she couldn't help but listen into the conversation.

"Have all the subjects gotten their shots?"

"Rider caught his supervisor, Agent 2, with the sleeping pills. Silver is still taking them without much restraint."

"Well,  Agent 2 is going to have to think of another way to keep getting them to Rider or he's going to find himself becoming inhumanely strong. Give it a efw minuts after that and the boy will 'pass out'. After that, chances are he won't make it. I'll give him a week? Maybe less if he's injured?"

Guy then seemed to tense up, like he wasn't expecting that news.

"You promised me there'd be no side effects."

"We tried to see how the subjects would cope if they came off the meds. Turns out that what I described to you above is exactly what happens."

"That was only  one of them, it won't happen to Walter and Flynn, will it?"

Captain didn't reply, they same cool look occupying his eyes even though he knew that he must have been in a lot of pain.

"You made the decision when you said you wanted your children to be the best agents while they were still in the womb. It was a risk the moment we fused the serum with your embryos."

"That was under you promise that they would be safe."

"You knew what you were signing up for the moment we told you it was a new serum. Now, find a way to get Agent 2 to get Rider his meds. Inject it into his food, his drinks, I don't know but if he dies as well, we'll have a grand total of 5 subjects left and we need them. The liquid form will be in the safe in the office. Get it to her as quick as you can."

Dejected and pained, Guy turned to the door. Before he caught sight of Dawn, she ran down the hallway and jumped onto the couch, giving Guy a small smile as he passed her.

She got up and went back to her room, giving the Captain before letting him go to her room.

She had a whole few months to think about it and it all clicked. Of course, while the boys have been here, they hadn't been taking the meds. It made sense, why suddenly Damon had enough strength to beat George and how Flynn had enough strength to beat Damon.

Flynn - the Eagle - was the strongest of the subjects which meant his dose had always been much stronger than the others. His sudden surge in power was clearly too much.

"George, I need to go get something. You know what to do if they stop breathing."

She had no intention of taking longer than three minutes but life had a way of always playing with her.

As fast as her feet could take her, she ran downstairs into the office, unlocking it with the key she had forged a few months ago following the incident. She ran in and found the safe, knocking in the code she'd laboured to guess a few months ago too. It's not like she'd planned to sue the serum, she just needed to make sure that she wasn't dreaming.

There, just like there was a few months back, were tens of thousands of the tiniest vials, all holding hardly a drop of liquid.  She knew that drop of liquid was enough to keep all of the subjects alive for the next week, at least.

Taking a few vials with her, she locked the safe back up and then the room, running back up the stairs even though her chest was heaving. Her lung capacity wasn't exactly the best.

The few vials she took - 5 to be precise - was enough for 25 subjects. She only needed one to keep the two alive but with the time constraint, she didn't have time to see how many she'd grabbed.

She was back in the room and the boys were beginning to loose the rose in their cheeks. She worked fast, grabbing two tiny syringes and taking out a fraction of the serum from each. She found the vein for each boy, sticking the syringe in.

Even in a state of near lifelessness, Flynn still looked quite peaceful, as if telling Dawn that he trusted her. Damon's face, however, was still stressed, like he hadn't gotten everything off of his mind yet.

The process was over and yet still, the two boys looked lifeless.

"Why isn't it working." she muttered to herself, looking hard into Flynn's peaceful face, as if it'd tell her what she was missing.

A minute had passed and the boys hadn't woken up yet. Their heart rate lowered, quicker and quicker.

They both levelled at 25 and Dawn hadn't even noticed when George had left the room to get Ismail.

She carried on staring into Flynn's face, tears she didn't know  she even had streaming down her face. Everything was heating up, like she was feeling pins and needles everywhere. There was nothing she could have done in that state, shaking and trembling at the thought of this being the first time that she might not have been able to save a patient.

It wasn't just that though, a voice in the back of her head told her.

It was the fact that it was Flynn. They'd known each other for a total of about two weeks and yet still, the one week of having talked to Flynn seemed to be the most peaceful week she'd ever had during these last 16 years of her life. As selfish as it was, she couldn't have him die on her now, not when he seemed to be the only one to at least act like he understood what was going on in her mind.

Blinking the tears back, she tried to steady her trembling hands, and yet they just wouldn't listen to her, like they were telling her that what was going to happen was inevitable.

Ismail ran in, his face burning red as he saw the two boys lying in their bed.

"You cannot mention this to Jaguar, am I clear Zero?"

"Yes, Spoon." she replied, standing to the side.

"How many more vials do you have?"

"4."

As they said this, Damon started to regain consciousness, the colour slowly coming back into his face. He opened his eyes for a brief second, wincing as the light of the brightly lighted room hit his sensitive eyes.

Dawn hopefully looked over at Flynn who was still looking like a corpse."

"He's down to 20bpm, if we don't do something he's going to die." she tried to explain, keeping her voice as level as she could.

Something told her, something deep in her gut, that things were going to be ok. So far for her, they seemed to be helping her out so she walked over to Damon, shielding his eyes.

"Open them." she instructed. He lisatened to her, surprised when the whole harsh light didn't hit him as hard as it did last time. "George will help you to your room, ok? You need to sleep it off."

Damon rubbed his face, wincing at the already formed black bruises that were scattered all over his face.

Dawn spared another glance at Flynn, his state not having changed.

"Ok." Ismail said, noticing that Flynn didn't look like he was waking up. "Zero, give me two vials."

Snapping her head back at him in the speed of lightning, her eyes bulged, as if Ismail had said the most outrageous thing. In essence, he had. 2 vials was enough to keep 10 different subjects alive and he was asking for them just for Flynn?

"What are you looking at, do you want to keep him alive or not?"

She passed them over quickly but watched warily as Ismail grabbed a bigger su=yringe and sucked up all of the liquid from both vials.

"Sto-"

But she couldn't stop him before he injected Flynn. As the liquid filled up Flynn's veins, he started gaining colour much quicker than Damon had, lightening the load that had been placed on her shoulders.

This left as quickly as it came as Flynn starrted moving. She thought that maybe this was a show that he was starting to wake but as quick as it had started, it became violent.

His bulging arms flailed around at a power that even Ismail was having a hard time calming down. A few seconds later, the legs joined, flowing into a full fledged seizure like movement.

"It isn't a seizure and we need to contain him." Ismail informed, trying to pin Flynn's arms above his head. Dawn grabbed his legs, trying as hard as she could to not get flung away from the sheer strength he was exerting. "If this doesn't end soon, he;s going to over exert himself to death."

At the sound of the word 'death', she ran into one of the cupboards, grabbing a benzodiazepine serum, she injected it into him.

A few minutes had passed and slowly, he began to calm down, sweat trickling down his forehead from all the exertion.

Ismail beckoned over George.

"Take him to his room. You aren't to mention what happened in this room today, understand?"

"Yes, boss."

George pushed the table out of the room, taking him down to the bedrooms.

Ismail looked over at her, the dark green shade his eyes had turned scaring Dawn a little but the shaking in her hands had stopped and she was ready to hear what she had to say.

However, what he had said in the end, confused the fuck out of her so badly, for the second time in a half hour, she had been stunned to silence.
