15 // Stranger Danger
"SO I had a weird sex dream about Andrew last night-"
I pulled a face, cocking a brow at Eva. "You mean Andrew from your Nutrition class?"
Andrew wasn't a familiar name, and I found myself more familiar with Eva's romantic ventures than I did my own most of the time. I mean, her long-winded and graphic monologues of 3 second glances were virtually impossible to escape from, and I knew this from firsthand experience, but Andrew was new. Definitely too new to be on sex-dream level. I eyed her with suspicion.
Eva nodded her head, thoughtfully chewing her gum, as if she was as surprised by this as I was. Her soft brown eyes wandered towards the ceiling as she hummed. "Yeah, it's weird. But he was like, really hot in it. Like lick-ice-cream-of-his-chest hot. Which, you know, I never really thought about him like that before, but today I was looking at him and..."
"Eva," I interrupted, demanding her gaze. "What did we agree upon?"
The tanned girl refused to meet my eyes but heaved a knowing sigh, pouting. "Just because I have a sexy dream about a guy does not mean that I have any legitimate chemistry with him. And okay, but-"
"When's the last time you had a conversation with dear Andrew?" I cut her off before she could argue, fixing her with an unimpressed look.
She deflated, the look on her face already telling me that her answer was going to be less than satisfactory and she knew it. "I asked if I could copy his homework last Tuesday. And he said no," she mumbled begrudgingly, crossing her arms against her chest and falling back onto the burgundy locker.
"Duh, Eva, you can do so much better. You think some douche that won't even let you copy his homework is the one for you? No, because that means that he definitely won't let me copy his homework and what's the point of you guys even having boyfriends then?" I shrugged, a betraying grin cracking on my face.
Eva snorted. "Oh, I wouldn't dream of it."
She pushed her curled caramel-coloured bangs from her face, eyes falling off in the distance. "You know, I actually miss Savannah's old boo, at least Carlton's friends were hot, and he let you copy his homework. I still don't get why she dumped him," Eva mused, nose scrunching in thought.
"Beats me," I sighed, shrugging unhelpfully. "She said she wanted to pursue other things. Although other things are definitely not helping me pass data management, but whatever. Where is she anyway? She's usually here by now," I muttered, her absence growing louder when I whipped my gaze around to see the blonde girl nowhere to be found.
As my eyes fell between the spaces of idle students and within the constant, dull buzz of sleep-thick conversation, Savannah was still very much not there. I glanced at my watch to find it only a couple minutes until class and my forehead creased. "That's weird..."
"Ah, she's there!"
My eyes fell on Savannah pacing down the hall, her pale face lighting up when she saw us, hand waving in our direction. My eyes then travelled to the strawberry milk in her other hand, and I had to stop myself from shaking my head.
"Eva's dreamy sexy things of boys that don't matter again," I tattled as soon as the blonde girl was within ear shot, earning an undignified huff from Eva, who frowned very pointedly at me.
Savannah immediately turned and grinned in in Eva's direction. "Do we need to have an intervention again? Because we can have another intervention. Also the muffins Stella made for that were delicious."
I beamed, a swell of pride blooming in my chest. "Intervention muffins were a good idea."
Eva ignored us and pushed out a pout on her bottom lip, pointing an accusing finger at Savannah. "Um, well, that is definitely her third strawberry milk this week. I thought we agreed on two a week, so!"
"She does have a point," I hummed in agreement, quirking a brow.
Savannah blinked innocently, taking another sip from her milk. "This was bought for me. I remember the agreement saying that I couldn't buy strawberry milk, nothing about receiving them as gifts," she said with a sly smile and a shrug.
I threw my hands in the air and cried, "Semantics!" but Eva was already on a different line of thought.
"Who bought you strawberry milk?" the tanned girl was quick to ask, her glossy lips pressed into a thin line, eyes narrowed.
"Reese."
I paused mid arm-throw. "A-wha?"
"What?" Eva gasped, palms slapping her cheeks in disbelief, her face of shock mirroring my own. But it was only seconds later before she had a tight grip on Savannah's shoulder and was shaking the poor girl. "Savannah, tell me everything, how dare you! Here I am having wet dreams about boys who don't even matter and you're getting showered in gifts from Reese fucking Powers?"
Savannah's face betrayed nothing, crystalline eyes wide and blinking with the innocence of a fawn. She casually took another sip of her milk, and shrugged.
I finally managed to close my gaping mouth, and a charge of frost touched my veins. There was a voice inside my head that said that I should've expected this, it was entirely of my own doing, but it still came as a shock. I knew that Reese moved fast, but I never thought he would move that fast. Feeling the weird pit hang low in my stomach, I rationalized that it was just guilt for selling out my best friend.
Eva was not satisfied with this answer, and continued shaking the poor girl. "Tell me, tell me everything! Spare no detail! I want to- need to know!"
"I don't really know, I was just walking by and Reese called my name and said he bought an extra milk for Wyatt and Wyatt was being a dick and told me to take it. And it was strawberry, so I took it," she explained, finding nothing insidious about the encounter at all.
I knew better.
"Stranger danger!" I cried, wanting to grab Savannah myself.
Eva slapped a hand over her forehead, an exaggerated pain crossing her face. "First it's milk, then it's dick, how is Savannah just getting all the luck?" she whined, and I found myself choking at the implications in her words.
Immediately I throw my arms around Savannah in a protective hold, pulling her away from Eva and all the girl's disgusting insinuations. "No one's touching her! I will rip off balls before they go anywhere near Savannah's precious face!"
Savannah giggled, barely fazed by my death grip around her, and continued to sip on her strawberry milk.
Eva rolled her eyes at me and sighed. "If I'm not getting dick, one of us should be at least."
The blonde girl managed to pull an arm out of my hold and comfortingly patted Eva on the shoulder. "There will be much sex in your future, Eva, I promise."
Eva nodded her head, a touched smile on her lips. "Thank you, your hope in me is what keeps me going."
The bell then resounded through the halls, a chorus of dings that spurred a groan from within me. Dropping my arms, I scrunched my nose. "Ah, damn, I forgot my books in my locker, I have to go get them. I'll see you guys later."
"Tonight?" Savannah chirped, a soft smile touching her lips.
"Let's watch John Tucker Must Die for the fiftieth time," Eva proposed, grinning, probably at the thought of a shirtless boys with washboard abs.
I froze, the words rushing together and stumbling on the tip of my tongue. "Uh, yeah- can't, sorry. Homework. It's killing me. Huge essay. Can't put it off. Gotta go. See you later. But not tonight. But later," I stuttered out, giving a frigid salute before turning on my heel and escaping down the hall.
Pushing out the thought of their confused faces, I cursed myself for letting my tongue trip over itself every time I had to cover up some sort of Reese problem. Because any time I had any interaction with him, it was always a problem. And it was only causing me more problems and really highlighting the fact that on-the-spot lying was not a skill that came easily to me.
I was so drawn in my thoughts that when a hand grabbed my arm, an immediate panic burst from within and I spun around, arms flailing. When I felt the back of my hand come in contact with face, I paused and looked to see Reese standing in front of me, rubbing his cheek protectively.
Around, I noticed, there were only a few stranger stragglers, and I was at least proud that he hadn't grabbed me in a crowded hall. I was still trying to distance myself as much as possible from him in the public eye since The Noodle Incident.
Reese frowned. "Dude. Not cool."
I snorted, a complacent smirk digging into my cheek . "You know, usually I would be, but I can't say that I'm that sorry."
"You just charm the pants off me sometimes," he grumbled, sarcasm weighing down his words as he continued rubbing his cheek.
With the utmost maturity, I scrunched my nose. "Please keep all your clothes on, I wouldn't want to cause the janitor the unnecessary pain of cleaning up my vomit, thanks."
Quick enough to give me whiplash, an inexplicable grin broke out on Reese's face, and it seemed that all was quickly forgotten as a familiar vigour sparked in those amber eyes. "Ha! Oh Sandavol, that'll never get old. Anyway, about tonight-"
"Hold it," I interrupted him, which he looked hardly surprised by, and I held up my hand with narrowed eyes. "We need to speak about this strawberry milk incident. Did you seriously just walk up to Savannah and throw milk in her face? That was your smooth-ass plan? Seriously? No wonder you wanted my help, I can't believe anyone's fallen for your shit," I shot him a skeptic look, my had poised unimpressed on my hip as I tried to fathom how Reese was considered a functioning human being in society.
"It was a casual bumping into her," he protested, crossing his arms over his chest, but the grin on his face knew better. "Innocent, really."
"Bullshit. You just happened to have strawberry milk?" I fixed him with a frosty look.
He shrugged. "Coincidence."
It was like a part of me knew better, and yet, he still never failed to surprise me. The crooked smile he wore remaind unfazed, and I sighed, rolling my eyes at his forced nonchalance. "Remind me to add stalker to your never ending list of faults."
Reese quirked a brow. "You keep a list?"
I bristled at the implications whispering behind his words. "I'm keeping a record, just in case you ever end up murdered. Evidence to convince a jury."
He barked out a laugh. "Coincidence, right?"
A betraying snort escaped me, and Reese's grin seemed to grow wider. When a beat of silence passed between us, I felt myself swallow harder than usual, and pointedly cleared my throat. That wasn't a laugh, I told myself, I was actually just choking on my own spit.
"Whatever, you're making me late, Powers, what's up? Get on with it," I urged, maybe a little too forcefully.
"Oh, yeah, I'll come get you at nine tonight. Bring some money so we can split a cab home."
I scoffed. "And they say chivalry is dead."
His eyebrows jumped up his forehead, wiggling with unsaid innuendo. "If you manage to get a cab home with Tyler, I'm sure he'll pay."
My eyes grew wide as his words touched the air, and immediately I whipped my head around to make sure that no one was within hearing distance. Thank god it seemed we were alone now, although that meant I was definitely late too.
"Powers!" I hissed, slapping his arm with the back of my hand. "We are still in the public sphere!"
He laughed, clearly not caring. Of course. "Just make sure you look good. Don't wear, well, that." He nodded to me.
I felt my lips purse bitterly, glancing down at my plain black hoodie and dark jeans, which admittedly I'd thrown on in a late rush without any particular care like usual mornings, but still felt myself bristle. Whatever. School wasn't a fashion show, obviously, I reassured myself.
"Cute," I faux-smiled at him. "Anyway, anything else? Do I need to bring any booze or anything? I can steal some from my brother, if needed," I suggested, knowing perfectly well where Chris so very poorly hid his stash.
A grin broke out across Reese's face. "Oh, no, I'm good for booze. Believe me, Sandavol, we are going to get you wasted tonight."
I dismissed this thought with a wave of my hand and brushed by him, feeling a little on edge as another late student ambled by. "I'll need it if I have to spend more than five minutes with you."
