16 - Wanda Talks Strategy With Her Dead Brother

"This hunk of junk needs to move," Pietro drawled beside Wanda in the backseat of the taxi. "Seriously."

"I can't go barreling into the facility, it's what they'll expect. I need to be smart about this."

The driver said nothing; Wanda had bewitched him prior to giving her destination.

The sun began to set over New York. Though Wanda wasn't actively using Helena's "scent" to track her, she knew where the girl was. Her mind went to all the bad possibilities. They could be hurting her. They could be using her as leverage...

"Why didn't you see that sooner?" Pietro mocked his sister, as if reading her thoughts. "Of course Helena is leverage! They're using her as bait. Wow." He wrinkled his nose. "I didn't believe they were capable of stooping so low."

"I didn't want to believe it, either, but yet, here we are." Wanda entertained herself with red wisps slithering around her fingers.

"What is the plan?"

"Even if I tell you, you can't be of use. You're...you're dead."

"I don't like to be reminded of that, thank you." Pietro crossed his arms over his chest.

"It's true, though." Wanda paused for a beat. "There are a lot of ways to do this. I won't get anywhere by knocking down their front door, though it is an option. We won't stop at the facility entrance; I'll have the car parked away so as to not raise suspicion."

"What about once you're inside?"

"I get Helena. Any who stand in my way...they'll wish they hadn't." Wanda's irises flashed red "They may seek to avenge Vision, because at this point they have to know it was me. They might throw everything at me. If they were smart, they'd let me take Helena. It'd buy them more time to live."

"That's all you want to go there for? Nothing else?" he pressed.

"I don't think it's simple to walk out with a corpse, Pietro. Even if I could get away with it, what would I do with you?"

"Give me a funeral, keep me around for company." He shrugged.

Wanda scowled. "Not funny."

"You didn't let me explain that last part."

"What do you mean?"

Pietro frowned, as he tried to press the button to lower his window. "Helena is capable of murder, all with a simple touch. Perhaps...perhaps she may be able to reverse that effect."

Wanda swallowed. This was the second time using Helena as a tool to resurrect Pietro had entered her mind in her brother's form. "That's asking the impossible, Pietro. I only know what she has given me. I don't believe resurrection is an ability of hers."

"Perhaps today might be the day to truly know. But, of course, that's if you can manage to bring yourself to visit me. Let alone the fact that you've got bigger fish to fry first. It was just a thought."

Seeing her dead brother tortured her more when he mentioned his theory. Or was it hers, since he was part of her mind? Could Helena be capable of such a task? Could Pietro be revived?

"If she isn't enough, you would need to step in. You could restart my mind since you seem to be an expert at manipulating them."

Wanda knew he didn't mean it in a bad way; rather, he was complimenting her powers. Powers she still didn't fully grasp. She'd only had them for a short while and felt she barely scratched the surface. "It would take a lot of concentration. I would need time."

"Then perhaps whatever plan you had in mind needs to be altered."

Wanda re-crossed her legs. She thought a lot about how to approach the facility, how to extract Helena without her being hurt in the process. There would be no easy way to do this, not without things getting dirty. Lucky for Wanda, she wasn't above playing dirty.

After all, she had something they didn't: a whole lot of magic on her side.

As instructed, the cab driver parked a considerable distance from the facility. Wanda remained in the backseat of the car, nerves starting to writhe her stomach.

"Pre-battle jitters?" Pietro teased.

"If this goes wrong...I don't know what will happen."

"The same can be said if things go right. You won't know until you start. Besides, you will kick ass. You're stronger than all of them combined."

Wanda smiled thinly. "I wish you were really here to help. I could use a speedster on my side."

"I could be."

With one deep exhale, Wanda Maximoff exited the cab. The car drove off. An escape plan wasn't fully solid in her mind; it'd be made up on the go. This of course hinged on how this extraction went.

I'm here, Helena. I'm coming for you. For their sake, they better not have harmed you.

With a motivated air about her, the witch stepped onto the facility grounds. She expected snipers on rooftops, ground troops to surround her with their weapons pointed and ready to fire. Instead, she walked calmly towards the facility.

This had to be intentional; there was no way the Avengers would think Wanda wouldn't show up at their front door for Helena.

Wanda's eyes swiveled around the facility grounds. The lawn care looked immaculate. She shuddered, realizing she'd be walking through the same halls as the people responsible for Pietro's death. Who should I tackle first?

Nobody came to meet her outside.

"Remember: it's just you in this," said Pietro, who walked beside her. "Be smart, Wanda. Think of Helena."

"I am." Energy hummed around the witch's hands; red tendrils of magic slithered around, ready to invade the minds of Avengers.

They definitely know I'm here. They wouldn't leave this unlocked. Wanda was able to get through the front door with little effort. Her feet sounded loud against the floors.

Concentrating, Wanda honed in on Helena's "scent". Where are you?

The witch froze, her magic sending a warning through her mind.

"No need to play Hide-and-Seek," Wanda called to the empty hall. "I'll play nice, for now."

From an open way in the hall, Natasha Romanoff emerged. She remained alone, a dumb move on her part, really. Wanda remained wary.

"Did you have a long time to think?" Romanoff asked her calmly.

"I did. I'm not sorry for the injuries I gave you all on my way out the first time. I hate that I'm back here, but I have to be. You have someone I know, I'd like to bring her home."

"Where is that home, exactly? Someone's stolen car? Someone's abandoned apartment?"

Wanda bristled. "It's unwise to anger me, Romanoff. Do you remember our past few encounters?"

"I remember when we were on the same side, how together we took Ultron and his robots down. I remember a girl who cared about people, who wanted to save them."

"That girl had her brother taken from her. She died when he did."

"Wanda, we understand—"

"No." A burst of magic exploded from Wanda, knocking Romanoff off of her feet. "You do not understand. How can someone like you possibly understand?"

"I'm learning to tap into the more emotional parts of me. Trust me, I don't like how ugly they can make me feel or get sometimes."

Wanda noticed the woman remained unarmed. "What kind of trick are you trying to pull?"

"No trick. We don't want to fight you, Wanda. We want to help."

"You aren't the people to do so. You have no right to want to help me, after what you've put me through!" With a cry, Wanda shot out magic streams at Romanoff. As the woman rose, Wanda smirked.

Natasha Romanoff's eyes were as red as Wanda's magic.

That wasn't so hard. With confidence, Wanda approached the assassin under her control.

"What do you say we work together, side by side?" she purred. "Go keep your 'friends' busy. Better yet, you tell me where Helena is first, then I'll let you go play."

"Thor has her guarded." Romanoff's face twitched, like she was trying to break the spell on her. She couldn't break it the first time, how could she possibly hope to try this time? "On the roof."

"I thought you collectively were smart. I guess that's not the case. Go on, then. Have some fun with your friends. Killing is allowed."

With a nod, Natasha Romanoff went to pursue her new targets, while Wanda went to obtain hers.
