Chapter 39: Discontent

Being stuck in bed turned out to be pure torture. I now understood why Asher had been so desperate to be released. The only time gave me loads of time to think which was the last thing I want to be doing right now. Images of Brandon dying before my eyes and Eric's lifeless body lying bloody and beaten on the ground keep replaying every time I closed my eyes. The what ifs were slowing driving me to the brink of insanity. What if I had just waited until Asher was able to go with me? What if I hadn't told the young wolves to run? Could I have saved them both if I had fought harder?

The only momentary reprieve was when Doc Havers came to check on me. So far, all the tests he ran came back promising, but he still maintained that I needed to rest some more. Time passed at a tediously slow pace. What was I supposed to do? I wasn't allowed to do any paperwork because it was deemed too strenuous. I am not sure if that was Haver's call or if it was Griffin's. Eventually, I turned to the tv for some mind-numbing distraction. Flipping through channel after channel of pointless drama and boring talk shows only served to give me a headache. Giving up, I launched the remote across the room in frustration.

"I can see you're handling your downtime better than me," Asher laughed.

"Whatever," I spat, now in a sour mood. Was it mature no, but I was beyond caring. Asher only laughed harder. He casually strolled over to the empty chair next to my bed.

"How are you feeling?" he asked as he took a seat propping one leg over the other.

"Better. I just wish I could be out there helping." Asher nodded in understanding. I am sure this was what he had felt like only days before trapped in this small room with nothing but free time. Time to think. Think about everything going on and what could happen.

"You are helping by healing. Griffin and I have everything handled." Griffin chose that moment to make his entrance.

"What do we have handled?" he asked strolling over to my bedside. From the bags under Griffin's eyes, I could tell he hadn't slept much last night if at all. Now that I was paying attention Asher looked to be in a similar condition. Both tried to play everything down for my benefit.

"I was just telling Logan to relax. We have everything under control," Asher explained. He didn't bother to look at Griffin as he spoke. They obviously hadn't worked out whatever had them at odds the other day. Looking between the two men, I couldn't help but get annoyed. Of all the times they could fight now was possibly the worst time to do so.

"What the hell is going on with you two. Yesterday you guys were arguing, and today you won't even look at each other." Asher glared at Griffin before turning to me. He stayed quiet but then frowned at me. He turned to Griffin his brows knit together. They stared at each other, and again I felt like they were having a silent conversation with each other.

"Seriously what's going on? I demanded out of irritation. Griffin turned to me, worry evident across his face.

"Get Havers," he ordered Asher. Asher nodded and quickly exited the room. Now I felt more confused than before.

"Why are you getting Havers?" For a moment, Griffin looked hesitant to answer.

"You couldn't hear us," he explained taking the seat Asher had been occupying.

"I can hear you just fine. What are you talking about?" Griffin shook his head.I could see the one look I never thought I would see one my friend's face. Pity.

"No, you couldn't. Both Asher and I tried talking to you through the link." No, that couldn't be right. I had heard Griffin perfectly well the other day after I had been injured. It had to be some kind of joke, but that wasn't right either. They wouldn't joke about something like this.

"That can't be right," I said shaking my head. Only to stop after feeling a wave of dizziness. Havers entered the room followed closely by Asher.

"And you both tried?" Havers asked Asher not even acknowledging my presence.

"Yeah, is that normal?" Asher asked his brow furrowed. Havers opened the file in his hands and studying them carefully. I was getting frustrated. They were acting like I wasn't even in the room like it wasn't my life they were discussing.

"What's wrong with me?" I finally demanded. I was used to being in control, to knowing everything that was going on, but now, now I felt weak and helpless.

"Hmm.. interesting," Havers said as he continued looking through the file. "I don't know why I didn't consider this before. The brunt of the damage to your brain seems to be in the left frontal lobe, namely the area that controls speech. It seems while your ability to speak remains intact the part of the brain that controls the link has not." I am not sure if it was from the affects pain medication or the pounding of my head, but his words didn't make sense. It took a couple of times of replaying them in my head before I grasped what he was saying. The link that connected me to my pack was somehow damaged.

"What do you mean by damaged exactly?" Griffin asked as I mulled the information over in my head.

"Well, I am not entirely sure. I have never come across something like this. We are going to have to perform some more tests to discover the severity of the damage. In the meantime, I am going to make a few calls too. See what I can find out." Havers turned to head out the door.

"Doc," I called out before he could close the door. He paused glancing back at me.

"Is it permanent?" I asked not sure I wanted to hear the answer. He frowned.

"I don't know."
