Chapter 34: Traitors and Trust
'Keep an eye on her, and don't let her leave,' I told Griffin through the link. If someone did take Izzy's brother, we didn't have much time to find him. I didn't want to risk her going off on her own. What I wanted to do was send out a search party, but I already had all the men I could spare out looking for the missing she-wolves. My only option was to go and search myself, and that was exactly, what I was going to do.
Silently leaving my office I tried to formulate a plan in my head. I needed to find the Phillips boy and find him fast. Honestly, I knew my tracking abilities weren't the best, and right now that was what I needed if I had any chance of finding him. I jogged over to the medical building; I needed to talk to Asher before I left.
I wasn't surprised to see Tiffany leaving Asher's room. She was laughing lightly, as she turned and noticed my approach.
"He's in a mood," she informed me still smiling and shaking her head. I could see the exhaustion on her face. I was sure she was spending every waking hour by his side it had nearly destroyed her when she first found out he had been injured so severely.
"Still not cleared by the doctor yet?" She shook her head.
"No, the doctor said Asher could probably leave tomorrow morning, but he acts like it's months away. Maybe seeing you will cheer him up a bit," she said hopefully. "I am off to get coffee. Would you like anything?"
"No thanks, I am not staying long." She nodded and headed down the long empty corridor to the cafeteria.
Asher was flipping through the tv channels when I entered the room. His face a mixture of boredom and frustration.
"I can't understand how people waste so much time watching this crap," he said irritated, dropping the remote down beside him.
"Nice to see you're feeling better."
"I am perfectly fine," Asher insisted. "Seriously. I think Havers just enjoys tormenting me," he complained. Watching Asher sitting in the hospital bedding with his arms crossed over his chest pouting was quite a sight to see. Normally I would have taken every chance to tease him but at the moment, I had more pressing matters at hand.
"Phillips is threatening war," I informed him. He looked up at me, his eyes swirling with questions.
"What? When did this happen?" he asked.
"Today, his son has gone missing, and he thinks I am behind his disappearance."
"What? Why the hell would he think that?" he questioned. Taking the seat beside his bed, I sighed deeply.
"One of his men caught Griffin snooping around outside."
"That stupid beta, all action, no forethought." Though he wasn't yelling, I could tell Asher was fuming. Griffin's lack of planning and concern for consequences had always been a point of contention between the two. Asher was meticulous when it came to thinking and planning things out it was why I was here now seeking his advice. Whereas Griffin wanted to get things done, he felt Asher wasted time and overthought everything. When it came to the three of us making decisions, they balanced each other out quite well, but on their own it was another story.
"So now what?" he asked running his hands through his hair. I shrugged.
"Now, I find the boy a bring him home before a war can happen," I replied as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"You're not going by yourself are you? Just give me a few minutes, and I'll come with you," He said starting to get out of bed. Putting my hand out to stop him I shook my head.
"No, you're going to stay right here. Your ribs have not completely healed. There is no way I am letting you go out there in your condition." He opened his mouth to protest but stopped when he took in my stern appearance.
"Fine, but you can't go out there alone. Take the buffoon with you then." Sounding none too pleased with his suggestion.
"I can't. I need him here to keep an eye on Izzy. I want to be sure she doesn't run off looking for her brother herself." Asher's eyebrows knit together.
"Her brother?" It was then I realized how little time I had had in the last couple of days to talk with him.
"Izzy is short for Isabella, as in Isabella Phillips." The way his mouth dropped open some similar to how Griffin had reacted when he heard the news.
"She's his daughter? That's why he had wanted to take her back to his pack when we had found her in the woods," he said realization dawning on him. "How is she taking his disappearance?" I could tell he was genuinely concerned for her.
"Not very well. That's one of the reasons I need to find him. I can't stand to see her hurting like this. It is killing me," I confessed.
"Damn, you two really must be mates. How the hell did that happen? I saw you and Olivia. You two were mates, I would swear my life on it," he said looking at me for answers.
"Honestly, I don't know. I feel a similar connection with Izzy as I did with Olivia, and my wolf keeps pushing me to mark her. I don't understand it, but it just feels right," I tried to explain. He nodded in understanding.
"So what exactly brings you by then?" he asked.
"I need to bring along a tracker if I have any hope of finding her brother."
"And you want to know what I think of you taking Brandon with you?" I nodded surprised he had guessed accurately, what I had been contemplating. "Well, I would have suggested you take Ryan along, but with his leg injured as it is, Brandon is your only other option. Just be careful." With a sigh, I rose from my seat.
"Yeah, I will, and take care of yourself. I will need you healthy in case this all goes sour."
"Don't worry I'll make sure he rests up," Tiffany interjected as she entered the room. "Just make sure you come back to us safely, Logan."
"I will. See you both soon." I gave them a quick wave before heading out.
"Logan, Logan wait up," Havers called jogging down the hall towards me. I stopped allowing him to catch up.
"Hey, Doc how is it going?"
"I wanted to speak with you about your CT scan," he informed me pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. I didn't have time for this right now. The longer it took me to start my search the less likely I would find the boy.
"Can it wait? I am busy at the moment," I asked him trying not to get frustrated.
"No, not really. Your scan showed a bit of swelling in your brain. It is nothing too severe, but you do need to be careful. Another major blow to the head and you might not be so lucky." It wasn't that I didn't appreciate what he was saying to me, but I didn't have the time to worry about it. I mean if we ended up going to war another bump to my head was the least of my problems. After promising him I would take it easy, I started for the holding cells.
The guards were shocked when I signed the release for Brandon but didn't dare question it. He watched me as I approached his cell.
"Alpha," he greeted me. It oddly angered me to have him address me like that after everything he had done.
"Brandon." I opened his cell and gestured for him to follow me. I didn't miss the hesitant look on his face as if he thought this to be some trick. His worry seemed to triple as he followed me out of the building.
"Alpha, may I ask where we are going?"
"I'll explain on the way. All you need to know is this is your chance to redeem yourself and save your family." I didn't look back to see his reaction; I wanted to get on the trail before the scent was completely lost.
As we exited the gates, I noticed the guard on watch was extremely vigilant. Griffin must have put everyone on high alert, in case Phillips decide to attack earlier.
"How's my son?" Brandon asked as we walked deeper into the woods. As much as I hated the guy I respected his dedication to his family. He genuinely cared about them.
"I haven't seen him since the ambush, honestly," I replied wondering myself how the young wolf was doing. It had to be killing him not to be able to go out a search for his mate. As the cold wind blew past us, Brandon stopped turning his head in the direction the wind came from.
"Rogues," he said. "About two miles beyond the eastern border." Trying to catch the scent, I took a deep breath, but nothing smelled off. I couldn't help but question Brandon. I didn't entirely trust him but decided to take a chance on him anyway. As I ran taking off toward the east border, I prayed to the moon goddess that this would lead me to the Phillips boy. Brandon trailed behind me a bit. He was only of the few older wolves that had never seen battle and had very minimal combat training. Once I was a few miles out from the edge of Mountain Ridge territory, I finally picked up the scent of the rogues there had to two maybe three of them mixed with another somewhat familiar scent. I couldn't quite place it, but I knew I had smelled it before.
Suddenly Brandon shifted and took off full speed ahead of me.
