Chapter 24: Interrogation

Crap. What the hell was I doing? I kept asking myself as I walked to the holding cells. I let it go too far, nearly marking her without even considering the consequences. On top of that, I didn't even know Izzy all that well. I had waited over a year before I marked Olivia. I wanted to do things right get to know her, court her, and make sure she was ready for what my mark would mean.

It wasn't something a wolf did on a whim. It meant much more than staking your claim. Yes, that was part of it, I mean the mark helped settle a wolf's need to mark its territory sorta speak, but it also meant that she-wolf was now his top priority. For an alpha, it was a bit more complicated than that. It meant a constant juggle between doing what was best for your pack and mate. Also, it put an enormous responsibility on the she-wolf's shoulders. It made her the luna, a vital member of the pack.

Olivia had taken her role as luna very seriously. She was always making sure pack members were happy, helping me with paper working, and most importantly she was the one standing by my side helping me make the hard decisions. She hadn't been like many lunas now. Most of them these days did very little if anything at all, for their pack. Many alphas were content having their mate stand silently by their side, but that hadn't been how I was raised.

My father always considered my mother his most valued confidant, and it wasn't like Olivia would have let her opinions be ignored even if I had tried. That woman always had a way of getting people to see things her way. A small smile crept its way onto my face just thinking of the way she was able to run circles around me with her words until I wasn't sure what side of the argument I was on.

Coming up to the small building, I quickly pushed through the rotating door before entering the main entrance. It had always reminded me of a courthouse. People were caring files and guards scattered around. The room was filled the with the sound of people talking and the clapping of shoes against the marble floor. The stone walls held photos of the pack members lost in battle. Each wall was assigned to a different rank. On the main wall was all of our fallen alphas, my father's photo hanging next to his father and so on and so forth.

We had been one of the few packs that managed to keep their pack in the family. Many other packs had not been so lucky, some losing their pack to another alpha, others dying before they were able to produce an heir. The thought that I had failed my family began to overwhelm me. My photo would be the last of the Blackwell line to hang here.

As I continued I walked past the wall where my mother and wife hung side by side. Unlike all the other fallen, they had wide smiles on their faces, their eyes gleaming with happiness. They were two of only five fallen lunas. I didn't know if that fact saddened me more or filled me with pride. They were fighters, dying to protect their packs.

I approached the metal door that lead down to the holding cells and greeted the guard with a quick nod before opening the door. Heading down the stairs, I could hear Griffin and Asher laughing and joking about the events that had transpired earlier today. I was half tempted to stay concealed in the stairwell listening to what they had to say, but then thought better of it and continued down the steps.

"Alpha," Asher greeted me with a bow of his head. No matter how many times I asked him to call me Logan, he still tended to revert to his old ways.

"Done already? Damn that was quick," Griffin said slapping me on the back a little rougher than necessary.

"We weren't doing anything but talking," I told him.

"Sure," He replied grinning at me. "I mean it is not like her scent isn't all over you, and your lips aren't at all red and swollen. My mistake." Griffin laughed and ruffled the hair on my head. I shoved him and turned away hoping they might not notice the slight blush now creeping up my neck.

"Brandon is already in the interrogation room waiting for us," Asher informed me, thankfully changing the subject. I nodded and headed towards the room. Two guards stood on either side of the door both visibly relaxing once they noticed our arrival.

"Alpha," they both greeted me. I smiled and dismissed them.

Brandon was sitting with his head down; his hands were clasped together and chained to the table. Part of me felt sorry for him. He looked broken and tired, but then I thought about what he had done to our pack and his son and all pity disappeared.

He looked up at the three of us and shrunk back into his chair. He refused to meet my eyes as he stared down at the metal table. I wasn't sure how to start. I had done numerous interrogations but never had it been someone I had known, let alone once trusted.

"Brandon," I said hoping to get him to look at me. I wanted to see his eyes, to get a read on him. Slowly he raised his head and looked at me, his eyes glistened with unshed tears.

"You must think I am weak and cowardly. I swear I only did what I did to protect my family," he said after a few moments of silence.

"To protected your family?" I questioned in a raised voice, anger surging through my veins. "How? By allowing rogues to take your son's mate?" Brandon's face twisted in confusion.

"Mate? My son has not found his mate, yet. He would have told me if he had," he reasoned. Griffin looked like he wanted to leap over the table and permanently arrange Brandon's face, but instead, he stood silently at my side clenching his fists. Asher, on the other hand, seemed to be the picture of calm. His eyes studying Brandon's every move.

"That is not what he told me when we spoke. I found him out in the woods this morning search for Lucy and the other Jacobs girls. He is certain she is his mate, and I don't doubt that he is right." The color slowly drained from his face as the realization of what he had done sunk in.

"No," he whispered to himself, shaking his head. "What have I done? I only wanted to protect them." Tears slipped from his eyes.

"Protect them from what?" I asked confused about what they needed protection from.

"We all know this pack is in danger. You are in no shape to protect us, you haven't been since... she died," he said hesitating on last few words. "He said if I helped him my family would be welcomed into his pack." His words were like a knife to the gut.

"He, who?" Griffin asked taking a step forward. Brandon didn't answer, and from the look on his face, he was going to tell us anytime soon.

"I don't know," he lied. The three of us exchanged knowing looks. We knew he was lying, but I decided not to push it for now. Honestly, I already had a sneaking suspicion on who might be behind all of this.

"Have the guards take him back to his cell," I told Asher, before leaving the room. Griffin followed quickly behind me.

"What? Are you buying that crap about him not knowing?" He questioned me.

"No," I replied calmly "But I think I already know who it is."

"Who?" He asked.

"Phillips."
