Chapter 14: Disbelief

"And you're sure that he's the spy?" Griffin asked as he paced back and forth in front of my desk. After finding both Asher and Griffin in the training room, we had made our way back to my office to speak in private. Ryan was nowhere to be seen when we arrived, his list sitting square in the middle of my desk. I was currently reading it over, but it was one name, the second one on the list right under Ryan's name that had my attention.

"Look, I know you don't want to believe it any more than I do, but what other explanation can you come up with?" I asked honestly hoping he might be able to prove me wrong. Griffin's face said it all; he couldn't come up with one.

"Logan's right, it makes sense." Asher had been quietly leaning up against the wall staring off into the distance up until this point. "Why else would he have lied to us?"

"It just doesn't make any sense. He has been such a valuable member of this pack," Griffin tried reasoning with us, and he was right. I would have never pegged Brandon Willis as a traitor. "Why would he betray us?" It was the same question I had been asking myself since I had spoken with his son, but I don't think anyone except for Brandon himself could answer it for us.

"I don't know, but he is the only one on this list that is claiming not to have been there. His own son named him as one of the attendees." I said through gritted teeth, the paper crumpling in my now clenched fist. It wasn't that I was angry at Griffin for questioning me, I would have been disappointed if he hadn't. I was just furious at the fact that someone so close to us could do such a thing; it boggled my mind.

"Did you speak with his wife, Lisa, yet?" He asked.

"She claimed they were out together all night same as Brandon had told us earlier."

"So maybe it is Ryan who is lying. Maybe he is the one involved." Asher tried to reason as.

"No, I am sure Ryan had nothing to do with the Jacobs girls disappearance. Lisa is just lying to protect her mate," I answered with full confidence that this was the case. Griffin took a seat across from me placing his head in his hands. I could tell that this was getting to him; his father was close friends with Brandon.

"How can you be so sure?" Asher questioned.

"Ryan told me today that he believes the Jacobs' eldest daughter, Lucy, is his mate." Griffin looked up at me a mixture of shock and disbelief covered his face.

"But the girl isn't even eighteen years of age yet," Asher said. His words made me roll my eyes. I might have expected Griffin to say something like that but not Asher. This was the guy who for two years straight wouldn't shut up about how he was positive Tiffany, Griffin's cousin, was going to be his mate. Griffin and I would joke about how stupid he was going to feel when she turned eighteen and found her real mate. It turned out we were the ones feeling stupid when we found out he had been right all along.

"Well he is eighteen, and I do remember a particular love sick puppy being confident of who his mate was right after his eighteenth birthday," Griffin said finally looking up. There was a teasing tone to his words though I could still see the sadness in his eyes. The look on Asher's face made me forget for a moment the seriousness of the situation. His cheeks and neck were a bright shade of red, his hand rubbing his neck like he so often did whenever he was uncomfortable or embarrassed. I couldn't help the laughter that escaped my mouth.

"You're both a couple of jerks; you know that?" Asher replied turning even redder if that was even possible. That comment did it. Griffin was nearly falling out of his chair in a fit of laughter, and I was struggling to breathe. As inappropriate as it was to be joking and laughing like this, it felt nice. It was almost like old times, like how we had been before. It wasn't long before Asher joined us in our amusement and was chuckling himself. I didn't realize how much I had missed this.

I grabbed my chest in an attempt to catch my breath; we needed to get back on track. Those girls' lives depended on us, and I wasn't going to let them down. I wasn't going to let anyone else lose their mate. I knew first hand what that could do to someone. It was a pain I would never wish on my worst enemy. Ryan was a good kid, who deserved a chance at a happy life, even if his father was a traitor.

"We need to go and speak to Brandon so we can find those girls and bring them home." My statement seemed to sober them both up very quickly as they each turned to me with a look of determination in their eyes.

As Griffin stood from his seat, we all turned and headed for the door. It was then I noticed the familiar scent of cherry orchid and lily blossom. She was on the other side of that door. I couldn't help but wonder how long she had been standing there. Had she been listening in on our conversation?

Asher was the first to reach the door. He quickly yanked it open almost toppling over Izzy small form. Had I been the only one to noticing her intoxicating fragrance? After quickly recovering Asher helped Izzy back to her feet. I forced myself to suppress a growl at him for his brief contact with her. I hated how my wolf reacted to her. It felt like a betrayal to Olivia.

"What are you doing here? I thought you left already?" Griffin snapped at her crossing his arms over his chest. His dislike for her almost seemed to roll off him in waves. I couldn't quite understand why, though, it wasn't like Griffin to be so hostile to anyone especially a pretty young woman.

"I don't need to explain myself to some dog," She spat back, looking him straight in the eyes. "I am here to speak with Logan. Can we talk?" Even though she was now addressing me, Izzy didn't look me in the eyes.

"Why so you can spout some more bull about being his mate?" Griffin barked out before I could respond. This time, I couldn't stop the snarl that came out. "I think you should lea--."

"Leave," I said finishing his sentence.

"You want me to leave?" She asked stumbling back as if my words had physically hurt her.

"Yeah, don't you know when you're not wanted?" Griffin asked again answering before I had the chance.

"I was talking to the two of you." Both Asher and Griffin looked at me with wide eyes. "I will meet you guys in the holding cells in a couple of minutes," I explained in a tone that left no room for argument. Asher nodded walking through the doorway, and with one last dirty look towards Izzy, Griffin soon followed suit closing the door with more force than was necessary.
