~~ SIXTY FOUR ~~
A/N: Another two updates coming your way! Enjoy
"Cold Fire!" was the first spell I cast, the three Holy Knights enveloped in blue flames.
They startled first at the cool flames dancing over them then at us as we came barrelling towards the demons with reckless abandon.
"Don't worry, guys! The Sin of Greed is here!"
"One of the sins?" cried the only female of the group. I laughed at the luck of it – this seemed to be the three knights who'd stood outside the shop earlier.
Before they could do anything, I activated my flames on both fists. "Enflame!" I hit the closest demon and it tumbled sideways from the force. A domino effect occurred and when they landed and the dust cleared, I blew on my fists as if to blow out the disappearing flames.
The knights stood unharmed in the centre, hands over their heads and debris bouncing off the defence of Cold Fire. They must have lost their blades along the way and they trembled like newborn calves, weary eyes wide in shock.
"You better get out of here, kids," Leraj said, drawing his sword.
The demons screeched, murderous eyes now focused entirely on us as they clambered inelegantly to their feet.
"Come on, let's go!" one of the males cried.
"Wait, we can help!" said the other, resisting his friend's attempts to drag him away. The female had already limped away and was watching from the shadow of a mainly upright building. "My skills are long range, I can provide support for you."
"You can do so by keeping your friends safe. Head back the way we came, you'll be safer in that direction, and stay hidden," I replied, taking measured steps before the demons. "We'll give you time to run before we use our powers so you better go quick."
He hesitated a moment longer then ran towards his female friend and gave her a piggyback. The other male followed diligently behind and they made haste past us.
"Thank you," the female said tiredly and I nodded at her in farewell.
"What do you have planned, Estra?" Leraj asked hurriedly, as the demons began charging us.
"Scatter for now! I plan on using Firework." We sprinted in different directions as the first demon huffed and snorted at the end of its charge.
I zipped through the legs of the next one and dodged the next two. The three chasing me collided then bunched together to come at me. I darted down a narrow alleyway just as they rammed into it, demolishing the two buildings. A wave of destruction followed close on my heels as I rode it to the safety of sunlight and immediately hooked a left.
I met Leraj in the middle of a courtyard. We pressed our backs to the fountain in the centre, the demons forming an arc before us. Adrenaline buzzing in my veins made me jittery and I calmed myself with a breath. I needed to concentrate, not follow blinding in the throes.
"I think they're far enough away," I said, clawing my hands and throwing them to the sky.
The air shimmered violently, speckles of light like midnight stars in the air around us and the demons. I tasted crackles on my tongue and my hair began rising on end. I felt rather than saw Leraj stiffen beside me as the spider veins of ebony zigzagged across my fingers and palms. I brought my hands down in line with my face, the demons visible between my fingers.
The Mana rose within me, blotting out all the aches and pains, filling me with euphoria and that hunger again. And something darker, something twisted and evil in my soul and so right all of sudden.
"Wait, Estra!"
With a vicious grin and my hands as black as midnight, I swung them out to the sides. "Firework!"
The world went black and white, then mere milliseconds afterwards the black collapsed in on itself and light brighter than the sun eclipsed the space. Fire erupted, all colours of the rainbow.
Buildings collapsed with the shockwave of heat and the demons were thrown feet away. When I looked down at my hands in disbelief, the black crept into my palm of my hand and slipped out of my skin. When I tipped it to the ground, it dripped off like oil and left no stain, taking with it the twisted want.
"What the actual hells?" breathed Leraj.
"Heh. I got a new magic trick."
"Magic trick? Estra, you just levelled buildings."
I glanced up at the devastation I'd wrought in all directions. Barely any building within 60 feet remained intact and upright. The demons scrambled in the rubble, limbs broken, blood pouring out of them. I also did not feel well; I rubbed the centre of my chest. It felt like I'd expended too much mana but it didn't at the same time. Not my mana anyway.
Could it be, when I stopped Meliodas and Ban in their tracks, I still had their mana inside of me?
A shadow fell over me and I snapped to attention, rolling out of the way as a fist crashed into the spot I'd just been standing. I pulled my sword free, rising carefully from the ground and my eyes never leaving the demon snarling at me.
"Legs, Estra! Take out their legs and get them on the ground for me."
"It's time to be turtles, everyone!" I crowed. I spun the sword once to warm the wrist then I dove between the demon's legs, slicing out the back of its ankles. I barely paused before I sprinted at the next two and repeated the process.
The next one figured out my game plan and ran at me on all fours like a dog.
"Fine then, you wanna play?" I ran my left hand down the flat of my sword. Flames spouted down the length of my blade and I swung full force at its face.
The blade tore through the demon face like it was wet paper and continued through until the rampaging demon had done a number on itself. It screeched as its back literally sluiced off and it fell sideways, thrashing in a pool of its own blood. Leraj was at its side in an instant, ripping the demon heart out of the knight's chest. The demon dissolved into ash, and I caught the knight before they could fall in the blood.
I stomped out of the red swamp and placed the knight down in the shadow of the building. They shivered as I draped a tattered pennant of Liones over them. "You're safe now."
They mumbled something in return then dozed off. I ran over to Leraj. He had his blade stabbed in a crack in the ground, leaning against it.
"Hey, you good?" I asked, laying a hand on his shoulder.
His weary eyes held mirth as he stood upright and sheathed his blade. "I'll be good once this is all over and I have a warm bed. I ache in muscles I didn't know existed." I chuckled at this. "And you?"
"I surprisingly feel better than ever," I admitted. Even with using Enflame, that cataclysmic Firework and the strength it required for me to swathe my blade in fire, I felt on top of my game. If anything, I was just fatigued from all the running and blade swinging.
"You've used an awful lot of mana. Are you sure?" His concern had me rolling my eyes.
"I'm fine, Leraj. You really don't have to worry. I'm more worried about you."
"Don't worry, I don't need any powers to get their hearts out."
"Did you get all the turtles I left behind?"
"Yeah. The three and then this one here," he said, nodding to the knight.
"Which just leaves-"
I was cut off by our final demon, an ugly blue brute with no eyes. The knight at the centre was a young female with shocking blue hair hanging in twin braids. Tears ran down her cheeks but her eyes were shut like she was sleeping.
Leraj slipped into the shadows of the building as I shouted at the demon, "Hey, ugly!" I waved my arms in the air to draw it away from Leraj's hiding spot. "I'm over here!"
It paused, huffing and snorting. Obviously it had some semblance of smarts if it hesitated to attack me. My blood rose, adrenaline coursing through me once again. This reminded me of the hunts as a fox, knowing the terrified prey, when finally caught, had realised its end was near.
Beaten, cornered. I shivered in anticipation, muscles tensing, mana reacting.
The demon roared and barrelled towards me. Orange and red filled my vision, and I raised my fists at the ready. The ground shook beneath my feet and I braced, bend at the knees to hold me steady. The fire on my arms danced, burning brighter and stronger, as I screamed my war cry and took off.
Twenty paces and I careened straight at the demon's legs.
My right hand opened, fingers clawed, and I let my momentum carry me as I hit the brakes and skidded beneath its legs. My flames tore flesh from the limb in an explosion of blood and it crashed to the ground behind me with a squeal.
I turned to it, teeth bared. It struggled to rise and Leraj appeared from the shadows, just as it rolled over to its back. He leapt onto it and stabbed sword and hand into the beast's chest. The heart he crushed in his fist and the demon dissolved, leaving behind the crying knight.
"You're okay now," I said, laying another tattered pennant I'd scavenged over her. "Any more?" I questioned Leraj.
He cocked his head to the side, eyes searching. In the distance more roaring echoed. "Majority in that direction."
I gritted my teeth, the thrill of the hunt in my veins. "Then let's go get us some more hearts."
