20171105. don't say that about my character
Now I normally don't do these kinds of things because I'm always afraid of backlash, but this has happened enough that I'm honestly tired.
People say certain things about my characters that just grind my gears.
My characters aren't perfect, I make sure of that, but just because they make a mistake does not mean you have the right to say awful things about them and call them heartless and rant about how much you hate them because:
There's a logical reason why they're like this. They're like this because they're upset, because they have a mindset. It might not be the best for the situation, but it's what they think is best.
It's not that I want everyone to only say good things about them, say what you want, comment when they do something dumb because they do. But think before you say awful things. Maybe read the story and think of the character's character before acting as if their decision was made by someone who doesn't have a mental illness, for example, who has been in this particular situation before.
They didn't just go to a party because they didn't care. (I'm getting real specific and if you're reading this don't come after me, cause we've already talked about this and I stand by what I said.)
It's not just commentary on their actions, it's just comments about their character?
I get comments like "this girl is beyond salty sometimes" (an actual comment I received) even though it was just stated why she was upset, it was like they didn't even read the story? (I could go on about this person for a while because what the heck, their comments were pretty rude, I'm sorry, but they were)
I got a comment saying "if she mentions being a feminist one more time, this feminist is going to slap her" (I couldn't remember the end, because I deleted it, but it's the gist) and I received other comments just like this.
I just get upset when people comment with these presumptuous comments as if they didn't read the story? When they assume they know better than I, the person who wrote the story, or when they just say plain awful things because they don't like that my character is a person who makes mistakes.
I just don't want comments about how my character is a bitch or a basic white girl because that just shows that you don't value other people enough to respect their own mindsets and choices that are different from your own. They have their reasons for acting certain ways—which I often show—so don't say awful things.
I get they're just characters and trying to apply the "treat others the way you want to be treated" mindset is kinda dumb, but:
A. Not speaking against this negative behavior and mindset when people comment plainly negative things solely because of a character's favorite color or the way they perceive things can potentially lead to an apathetic lifestyle where if someone is different than you, they're not worth the same value you are, which isn't a right way of thinking.
B. They're my characters, I put a lot of care into them and thought into them (sometimes, like Diana, I throw in part of myself because I can write about it with experience) so when someone doesn't understand a part of their character—which is fine until they start to act like they do and say very presumptuous and awful things—it bothers me.
I think it bothers me because it's the same way as if someone were to make a comment about your friend and you know why they're like that and you just wanna shout at that person to cut them some slack because they have every right to be like this.
This sounds so stupid and petty with me writing this out now, but this was a recurring theme for some time and it just drained me because it hurts to see people not understanding, because then it also comments on my writing, that I can't portray what I want well, which hurts.
It's hard to see all these people calling my characters bitchy for not liking the love interest right away, or calling them beyond salty for being upset at an ongoing problem which was detrimental to her depression. Or constantly complaining about how much this character mentions Pluto just because they don't like Pluto.
It's my story and my characters, not yours. Say what you want, I'm not saying only say nice things. But just think before you say stuff, because I read all of my comments.
