21 | ❛ The Night of Phone Calls ❜
❛ Doesn't make any sense ❜
Melisande Dubois had never been as happy as she was with Peter Parker. Saying that out loud sounds cliche and just like every other teen romance in the world, but there was a certain truth to it. Andy's life since the death of her parents had been miserable and she had never been truly joyful. Sure she had smiled and laughed, even with the Avengers since they had welcomed her in months ago, but this was different, this was fresh.
There was a certain lightness to her as she walked around the compound every day. Her entire team noticed, but they feared that asking too many questions would lead to her final downward spiral.
They weren't aware of the entire situation with her and Peter since she refused to reveal anything of the sorts. But Wanda had grabbed Andy's phone that she had conveniently left on the table unlocked and when she read through her text messages with Peter it was pretty clear they were dating - though Andy didn't want to put a label on it like that.
But she was happy. Melisande Dubois was truly happy. She was enjoying life, and there was a sense of pride that never seemed it would disappear.
She embodied this as she sat on her bed in her apartment in Queens one afternoon after a long day of laughing and blushing with Peter. They hadn't put a title on their relationship yet, but Ned had made more than several innendos that they were dating, though that had only gone on a few.
Though Andy was in high spirits, she didn't have any desire to take a two hour train ride back to the compound so instead she sat on her warm comforter with her phone tossed on the pillow beside her while being set to speaker phone so she could clearly hear the person on the other end while still trying to get her project with Peter more than halfway done.
"Gross," the person on the other end said, Andy just imagining them grimacing as she talked happily about Peter Parker. "Oh, please, like you want to be alone the rest of your life," the girl scoffed as she flipped through a newspaper article on Spider-Man, just trying to pick out the bad parts of the article to use as the cons to the vigilante for her project. "I never said alone but the idea of being independent gives me butterflies," the person replied with a chuckle.
Andy grinned, "You keep telling yourself that, MJ. Don't come crying to me when some super cute guy, or girl - I don't judge - comes up to you and asks you out but you blurt out that too much socialism leads to conflict and then just back away," Andy honestly replied to her best friend while typing information into her computer.
Andy could practically hear Michelle roll her eyes as she cursed at the girl but instead of getting angry about it, Andy laughed and changed the subject. "Have you started your civics project yet?" the girl wondered while tossing her pencil onto her notebook and snuggling farther into her pillows to prop her laptop onto her knees. Michelle scoffed, "Started? More like haven't even touched," she grumbled, papers rustling in the background that made Andy assume the girl had reached for the assignment. Andy raised her eyebrows, "Haven't started? It's due next week."
"I know, I know. But I have Miles Morales and he doesn't exactly scream Harvard Applicant," Michelle sighed as her fingers clicked away on her laptop inside her small apartment. Andy smirked, "What's your project on anyway?"
"Something about the pros and cons to the new sewage laws in New York. I haven't exactly done a ton of research on it but I have a few tabs saved."
"Let me guess, you're doing cons," Melisande assumed while reaching for a newspaper farther on the foot of her bed. She grunted as her fingers curled under it and swiped it up before folding the back and reading the highlighted portion of the text. "Lucky guess, And. Miles has the pros, but I feel like I'll be doing both."
Andy hummed, "I think Peter knows what his part is. I'm not finding any pros to Spider-Man, it's hard enough to find the cons."
Michelle groaned, "All I hear is Spider-Man this and that and bleh. Don't people have anything better to talk about?" The teenager questioned while awaiting Andy's response.
She waited for a moment but the girl had yet to reply. Her attention was hooked on an article she had just picked up from the New York Times, and though it was from months ago, it peaked her attention. The headline read: Ben Parker Murdered, Spider-Man Hunting. Andy skimmed the article, wondering how she hadn't noticed this before. The article basically said that on the night Benjamin Parker was murdered, the vigilante had arisen and chased down the murderer before he was finally in custody of the police.
That could be anything, thought Andy. But could it really? Andy didn't believe in coincidences, but it was a mighty big assumption to go from Ben's murder to his nephew avenging his death so her mind raced another direction as she put back down the newspaper and picked up a different one. "Andy? You there?" Michelle wondered, her voice bringing Andy back to reality. "Yeah, I'm here. Sorry, I was reading something," she apologized before droppin gher head back and closing her eyes to just have a moment of silence before returning to work on her homework.
"What were you saying?" she asked as he eyes snapped open again and her fingers hit numerous letter keys on her laptop. "Just trashing our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man," Michelle sighed. "Your project must be a breeze, huh?"
Andy huffed, "Yeah, tell me about it. Half these articles are just complaining about him. Guess I can thank J Jonah Jameson for that."
"Honestly, it almost makes me feel bad for the kid. But then again, maybe not," Michelle shrugged. Andy didn't hear a word of what Michelle said, and instead fixated her attention on the print in a different newspaper. She bit down on the edge of her pen as she studied the date of the release and she noticed that the bus crash mentioned in here was on the same day Peter and her had their second date where he excused himself early with an excuse that May needed his help with some boxes at home. SHe hadn't noticed it before, but Spider-Man helped save twenty people from going over a bridge that day, all at the same time that Aunt May needed to get something from a storage unit.
"Michelle..." the girl trailed off, her pen falling from her lips and dropping onto the blanket beneath her. "I'm gonna have to call you back," the girl excused before she slammed her finger on the end call button and underlined the date and wrote her notes on the side.
"This doesn't make any sense," she muttered to herself before putting the two newspaper clippings to the side and pulling her computer closer to her legs as she more comfortably shifted herself on her bed.
She was about to open a tab when she saw a stream of red fly past her window and quickly the girl scrambled to her feet and ran to her window. She saw the same hero she was studying flip onto a rooftop across from her and she turned around so he wouldn't notice her. She snapped her curtains shut before snatching her phone from her bed and while peering from behind the curtain she sloppily typed in a number.
She lifted the phone to her ear as she observed the vigilante and as the number rang, she saw him pull his phone from his hood and stare at the caller ID. Andy's eyes widened as she saw him answer the phone and Peter's happy voice rang from the other end, "Hey, And. Now's really not a good time, could I call you back in, like, two hours?" the boy asked.
Andy didn't respond, she just continued to stare at Spider-Man from the corner of her curtain. "Andy? Are you there?" he asked again.
Spider-Man's head turned to Andy's window where he saw a single eye looking at him from the window. He stood up straighter and Andy whispered, "Shit!" into the phone before hanging up and closing the curtain again.
Her heart began to race ever so quickly and she flattened herself against the wall in her room while she heard something move past her window. On any other night she would have thought it was a bird or a frog, but tonight she knew exactly who it was.
She was scared that if she peeled herself from her wall she would see two black eyes staring at her, and even with her curtain up fear still raked through her body.
The girl waited five minutes, standing absolutely silent and still just in case the vigilante was still out there. However, once she had made to her feet for quite some time, she ran to her bed and gathered all her research and her laptop into her arms before turning off the bedroom light and going into the living room. She dropped everything onto the couch before carefully going back into her room to retrieve a pillow, and once she had everything she made her bed on the couch and set up her research.
She knew exactly who Peter Parker was. He was the same person who attempted to stop both Piracy and Thunderbird but realistically let the villain get away while Andy was trapped against a wall.
The person she thought she knew was a person she knew nothing about.
She needed to tell someone, so without hesitation, she lifted the phone to her ear and waited for the line to click on the other end.
"Tony, I have something important to tell you," she breathed out while glancing at her living room window that was covered by blackout curtains. "Peter Parker is the Spider-Man."
