Chapter 4. Getting stalked

Three days. Three days until the night of the formal. With the formal being so close everyone was excited yet nervous. Everyone was either nervous as to if they were going to be asked to the dance, nervous about their dress or makeup, or for one person, nervous about where their dress was.

"Where could it be? It's nowhere! I'm gonna be the only girl at the dance without a dress and everyone is gonna laugh at me!" Caroline ranted to Chance, the boy she deemed her therapist/'best friend'.

Caroline at this point was almost hyperventilating. Her dress had gone missing a few days ago after they finished shopping and she hadn't seen it since. She had looked everywhere for the dress and finally giving up on the search she had tried to buy another only to see all the stores were sold out or the dresses were too big or expensive.

"Caroline! Calm down! I already told you this but just ask the guys! You said they were there with you so maybe they saw where you left your dress!" Chance sighed as he tried to calm Caroline down, she had been bothering him for what felt like hours and wouldn't leave him alone.

Caroline paused, "You know what? That's good idea! Thanks Chance!" She smiled half heartedly before sprinting out of the classroom and into the hallway where the guys sat working.

Chance rolled his eyes at her actions before turning his attention onto Mya, the girl he liked. He had a crush on her ever since he moved there 4 months ago but no matter what he did she never seemed to pay any attention to him. She never seemed to pay attention to any of the guys except Spencer which made him jealous, even if she did hate Spencer.

Mya however, thought Chance was an okay guy. He was fun to talk to when he actually spoke instead of staring at her the entire time and he also shared not only her love for horses but animals in general which was something rare amoung her classmates.

"Hey Chance! Enjoy Caroline pestering you for an hour?" Mya questioned, laughing quietly to herself.

"Well... Uh... Yea- No! I mean no! Yeah that's what I meant!"

Chance watched Mya laugh at his stuttering. His eyes softened as he watched her, he wished he would be the reason she laughed everyday instead of her friends and the other guys. He would do anything to just get her to notice him as a person, and even more for her to feel for him the same way he did for her.

'I wish she would go to the formal with me but she'd never accept to go with someone like me...' Chance thought.

"Yes." Chance wiped his head up, rapidly blinking. Mya had a huge grin on and she was laughing at something he didn't know. He suddenly grew nervous. Had he said that out loud?

"W-what?"

"I said yes. You asked me if I wanted to go to the formal with you." Mya said slowly.

"I said that out loud?!" Chance was now panicking, even though Mya had said yes he was nervous that she might find out he wanted to go as more than friends.

"Yeah you did. It's not a big deal though! We're just going as friends right?" Mya questioned with a somewhat evil expression.

Mya certainly wasn't the brightest when it came to people liking her but when it came to Chance it was easy to see he had a huge crush on her. In reality she thought it was cute and had devolved a small crush on the boy a few months after he had arrived. While it seemed like she ignored the boy it was actually the opposite, the only reason she didn't talk to him was the fact that if she did she might reavel her feelings for him. That didn't mean she wouldn't torture him about it however, as she never got the chance with her friends.

"Mya you do realize Chancey boy here has a huge crush on you?" Brianna said, grinning evilly and she walked over and slung an arm around Chance.

"You do?" Mya questioned, pasting a fake expression of shock onto her face.

"No! I mean your pretty, super smart and you love horses which are my favourite animal and-!" Brianna interrupted Chance before he had the chance to finish.

"Chance no matter how hard you deny it we all know it's true! Even Mya here knows!"

"Y-you knew?"

Chance turned to Mya with a shocked and slightly nervous expression to which she nodded sheepishly. Mya has known about his huge crush on her ever since they had first spoke. To say his feelings for her were obvious was easily a understatement.

"But you said yes!"

" I know." Mya said slowly.

"Why would you-!"

"Oh my god Chancey boy! You're so dense! Why do you think she would say yes even if she knew you liked her?" Brianna yelled, rolling her eyes in frustration at the scene in front of her.

Chance knew what Brianna was trying to hint at but kept telling himself that Mya would never like him back. Sure, he liked her but that didn't mean he was going to force her to like him, he wanted her to like him for him not because she had too.

"Chance... I like you. That's why I agreed to go to the formal with you. I like you a lot and not the way someone would think of a friend." Mya said, finally gathering the courage to tell the boy she liked her feelings.

It went silent. No one dared to speak as they might ruin the moment. Truly, this was a moment they knew would only happen once. Mya had never had a crush on a boy other than Chance and Brianna knew that if they didn't work out then Mya would probably never have a crush again.

"I'll let you guys sort this out." Brianna gave Mya a soft smile before walking away towards the rest of her friends.

"Why didn't you tell me this earlier! Oh my god Mya! You and Chance are so cute together!" Caroline squealed as she walked down the hallway towards the cafeteria with Brianna, Mya, and Hailey.

"You were in the hallway with the guys and I don't think I could've just left to go get you." Mya sarcastically replied with a slight grin on her face showing she was joking.

Brianna rolled her eyes, "You two need to stop arguing so much," she paused, "Wait... Caroline did you find out if the guys knew where your dress was?"

Caroline shook her head, "No."

"You could always just get another one." Hailey suggested, holding the door open for her friends.

Caroline shrugged and sighed. As much as she'd love to buy another dress she couldn't. She had gone back to the mall earlier that week after she had discovered her dress had gone missing only to find out more than half the stores were either sold out, closed, or had only dresses that were too expensive or big.

"I'm sure you'll find it." Hailey promised.

"I hope so." Caroline replied half heartedly.

"Cheer up! You could always style the new brand of dresses we designed." Brianna joked.

The year before, a few weeks before the first formal, they had made a joke about them not finding dresses and having to wear trash bags as dresses. They soon replaced the trash bags with blankets because whenever Brianna had slept over at Caroline's they always wrapped theirselves in blankets during the morning in a style that reminded them of dresses.

"I almost forgot about that! Which style should I wear then? White street trash with holes or black velvet dumpster wrap?"

Brianna and Caroline began giggling and chatting between themselves as they entered the cafeteria, talking about what style of dress Caroline should wear if she can't find her original dress.

When the entered the cafeteria, or Cafe as everyone called it, they split up and said goodbye before heading off into their respective groups. Caroline going with Hailey and Brianna going with Mya.

In reality the girls had multiple groups which were rarely all together. The groups were split up mostly because of drama at the beginning of the school year and people making new friends. Caroline was somewhat a bridge between all the groups as she changed tables everyday to make sure everyone was still friends.

"Caroline! Have any luck finding your dress?" Kennedy asked as Hailey and Caroline seated themselves at their table.

"Nope." Caroline sighed resting her head in her hand as she watched Kathleen and Senja bickering.

"Aww I hope you find it soon." Kennedy said cheerfully to which Caroline just nodded.

"Oh Caroline! Hailey! You two are finally here! I swear you two are the slowest of the group!" Kathleen teased having finally finished her discussion with Senja.

"Yeah! I swear you two take forever to fly across the ocean." Senja stated, making over exaggerated hand motions.

"Hey! That's Hailey not me!" Caroline yelled causing Hailey to glare at her.

"How is it me! I'm obviously the fastest here!"

"Oh really now? You wanna fight Hailey? You wanna race?" Caroline challenged.

"Yeah! Let's fight right here!"

"I agree! Right after I get my brownie of course!" Caroline replied cheerfully as she got up and pulled Hailey away from the table towards the front of the cafe.

"They're crazy I swear..." Kathleen said shaking her head in mock disappointment.

Kennedy nodded in agreement half listening to what Kathleen said and half interested in watching Senja struggle to open a wrapper. Senja had always had trouble opening wrappers but refused her friends help every time they offered to open it for her resulting in her always being late to eat her food.

"Senja you sure you don't need help?" Kennedy teased.

Senja just shook her head slapping away Kathleen's hands as she tried to grab the food out of Senja's hands. Senja continued to fiddle with the wrapper until finally, she got it open.

"Wow! Three minutes and thirty seconds! A new record!" Sarah said teasingly as she plopped down in the seat Caroline had been seated in earlier.

Sarah usually sat with a different group from Senja, Kathleen, and Kennedy but regularly came to 'visit' with them. It wasn't surprising for Sarah to sit with them but it somewhat shocked the girls that Sarah had noticed Senja struggling with the wrapper all the way from the other table.

"Hey Sarah! Decided to sit with us this time?" Kennedy questioned.

Sarah nodded, "It's been a while since I sat with you so I decided why not?"

"Shhh.... It's obviously because we are much more fabulous than your other friends." Kennedy joked to which Sarah laughed.

"Sure..."

"Hey! We're fabulous! Don't you dare tell us we aren't!" Kathleen challenged, butting into the conversation.

"You aren't."

"How dare!"

When Caroline and Hailey finally arrived from getting Caroline's brownie it was already almost time to leave. While this wasn't unusual as the lines for the cafeteria food were always really long, it was odd that Hailey's face was a bright shade of red and Caroline was giggling behind her hand.

"How long was the line? That took a long time!" Senja exclaimed once they arrived.

Caroline shrugged before giving Sarah an overexaggerated glare before sitting in the seat next to Kathleen at the end of the table. At their tables they all had arranged seats where they would always sit. Kathleen would always sit next to Senja and in front of Caroline, Senja next to Kathleen and in front of Hailey who was beside Caroline, and Kennedy who sat at the end of the table on Caroline's left.

Their seating was actually arranged in this certain way for a few different reasons. One being that Caroline always had a problem with people watching her eating as well as her staring off into space and watching people by accident. Kathleen fixed this problem since she was tall enough to mostly block people from staring at Caroline and Caroline to stop staring at other people. The second reason was because Caroline and Senja always made a game of having stare offs during the middle of lunch to entertain themselves.

"It wasn't the line that held us up." Caroline gave Hailey an evil grin as she took her seat to which Hailey returned with a glare, trying to hide her red cheeks.

"What happened?" Kathleen questioned.

"Well... Hailey just got asked to the formal by Ricky." Caroline said gleefully, chuckling to herself at the glares Hailey sent her.

"Oh my god Hailey! Did you say yes?" Kennedy shouted, excited that one of her favourite pairings might become a thing.

"I don't know what to say! I told him to give me a little while to think." Hailey responding with a nervous expression on her face as she glanced over her shoulder at Ricky who was seated at the guys table.

"Hailey you have to say yes! We know you like him too!" Sarah replied with an excited grin on her face, happy for her cousin.

During this exchange Caroline had drifted off into space, thinking about how cute Hailey and Ricky would be at the formal. She imagined Hailey hiding behind Kathleen refusing to dance as Ricky tried to get her dance with him during a slow song and ended up as a giggling mess. She blinked, drifting back into reality only to glance over at the guys table and freeze.

It was him and he was staring straight at her with a somewhat evil expression. He winked at her before mouthing the word 'dress'.
