i. peaches and asshole

a/n: inspired heavily by the love hypothesis! (a great book hehe) and will be updated every week because this draft has been sitting in my google docs for a long time so 75% have already been written:)

hope you enjoy!<3

Yerim's list of "sights that nobody, no matter what wrong they committed, should be forced to see" was long with a total of 19 bullet points. The dots on the surface of a strawberry, for example. Her Shih Tzu's sexual relationship with her couch pillows was another one. Or the most recent one: a couple having sex on the subway during a luggish Monday night.

But standing next to a bin of nectarines, a few flies dawdling above the sweet fruits, Yerim was positive that the sight in front of her had just dethroned everything else.

Jungkook clad in black yoga pants (so loose it could probably fit two of Yerim's torso), thick white socks that were rolled at the ankle, an oversized shirt reaching the midst of his thighs, and slippers that definitely belonged in the house and should never see the light of the day. In other words, he looked like an abstract drawing that went wrong, which really said something because those kinds of drawings could never be wrong.

That wasn't the main reason, though. With him looking like this, he felt normal, which Yerim didn't like one bit. Because him being mean to her in business attire gave her an excuse for him hating her: the job. However, in regular clothes, that protection was stripped away, meaning he simply hated her.

For what reason? She had no idea.

"Why are you here?" The question sounded more like a command.

He shoved a hand through his hair. Yerim blinked in disbelief, watching the black strands flop from one side of his head to another. They seemed to have a mind of their own, sticking up from the humidity, static, or whatever made hair stand up. And - oh my god - was his hair always this long, reaching below the lobe of his ears? Huh, thinking back to the times they worked together, she realized that he wasn't wearing the usual greasy hair gel, which, in her opinion, did nothing but suffocate his hair follicles.

"I need to buy food."

His response - more specifically, the tone of his voice - almost made Yerim jump out of her skin and run away screaming "murder". Not because his words were as sharp as a knife's edge, but because they didn't contain an undercurrent of malicious intent and torture. No, everytime he spoke to her, he had always been downright rude. Yerim swore, in the four years she worked for him, that she had never heard a single compliment from those chapped lips of his.

"But why do you need to buy food?"

His eyebrows furrowed. "Because I need to eat."

"What? No, wait, wrong question." She pointed at the paper taped to the black plastic sign and said, "These nectarines cost about two dollars per pound and are probably expiring. Shouldn't you be at a store that sold - I don't know - one stalk of celery for fifty dollars?"

Buying groceries that expensive would probably leave Yerim paying off debt for the rest of her life and even her next life. But, for Jeon Jungkook, one of the youngest supervisors of Jeon's Skyline, a successful firm that domestically and internationally catered to the architectural designs and needs of its customers, swiping fifty dollars was as easy as breathing. He probably woke up atop silk bed sheets and dressed in tailored velvet suits to drive to work in his sleek, eco-friendly electric car. It also helped that his father was the CEO of the company.

He continued to look massively confused. "Celery for fifty dollars?"

Yerim scowled. "Don't act dumb with me. I know rich people eat out of silver spoons."

Casually picking up a plump nectarine, he said, "I'm pretty sure that's a saying."

"A saying based on the truth."

"Well, I'll let you know that I eat out of stainless steel spoons."

Yerim grinded her teeth, swallowing a word that started with the letter "b" and could also be used to call a female dog, based solely on the fact that he was her boss. She couldn't be fired, yet. "You know what, never mind about that. Why are you here, though?"

"Like I said before, I need food."

Jerk, she seethed. He talked to her like she was a baby learning how to write and recognize the alphabet. The first few times, she had tolerated it, stuffed her annoyance underneath her skin and kept quiet. However, as it kept on repeating over the years, she had began to snap under her breath about his incompetency, wishing upon him the most horrible curses. Now, she muttered, hands clenching the clear plastic bag, "I hope you starve."

Jungkook frowned, dropping a peach into one of those plastic bags. "That's rude."

Yerim's jaw dropped. Who would've thought while standing in front of her dirty mirror, brushing her teeth, and struggling not to fall asleep again, that she would be having her asshole, dickhead of a boss calling her rude. Never in a million years.

"You know what," she growled, whirling around and completely forgetting the cheap peaches (which she would later regret because that was her favorite fruit). "Today's Sunday, and Sunday is the weekend, meaning I'm not forced to speak or look at you. So, good bye." Then, as good measure, she deadpanned, "I hope you have a bad rest of the day."

She stormed away, imagining a trail of dust settling in her wake, when Jungkook called out.

"Yerim."

That stopped her. She whirled around in surprise. He had never called her by her first name. On the rare occasions that he needed to address her, he usually went by Miss Kim.

Maybe it was because today was a Sunday?

Maybe the weekend dulled his sharper edges?

Maybe it was because of that atrocious outfit he-

"Don't forget tomorrow's meeting."

Her thoughts screeched to a halt.

Jungkook casually dropped another peach into the plastic bag.

"You were late for ten minutes last time and almost ruined the whole negotiation, or did you forget?"

Oh.

Her blood boiled. Of course, she hasn't forgotten, especially since those ten minutes had been filled with excruciating pain. She had been so anxious and frazzled preparing for that meeting the previous night that she had slept past her alarm and woken up with the worst cramp known to man-kind. After ten minutes of panting and heaving in the company restroom, she had no choice but to suck it up and trudge into the meeting room, even though her cramp pills didn't kick in until thirty minutes into the meeting.

What an asshole.

"I won't forget," Yerim gritted out, venom practically dripping from her words.

"Good because this meeting can..."

She zoned him out, partly because she already knew the importance of securing this deal (she liked to be on top of her game), but mostly because she couldn't believe she had been tricked by his innocent appearance.

Yes, Jeon Jungkook might've been wearing the most horrifying outfit ever, might have looked like any normal person frantically ordering their mandatory Starbucks drink, but the core of his soul was still black: a naggy, arrogant, and annoying boss.

Yerim was the stupid one for forgetting.

Suddenly, Jungkook went rigid. A look of horror replaced his normally bored expression. The blood drained from his face, making him look like a vampire in oversized pajamas, and Yerim swore he cursed softly.  "You're here," he whispered.

She scowled. Hard. So hard that the corners of her lips were close to splitting her face in half. Huffing, she crossed her arms, "What do you mean? I have been right here for the last ten minutes."

And then her asshole of a boss seemed to do the impossible.

He jumped a foot into the air.

It wasn't until his eyes darted to her before traveling back to a point beyond her shoulders that she realized he wasn't talking about her.

Okay...

That was even weirder.

What could move the immovable Jungkook?

She was about to turn around, to see the ghost that he had seen, when he moved.

The next series of events happened so fast that Yerim's brain struggled to catch up.

An arm - probably Jungkook's arm (who else could the arm belong to?) - shot out and grabbed her wrist. Then, she was being pulled forward, more and more, until she bumped against something hard. Wait, a chest? Before she could confirm that chest, maybe poke it a bit or perform a DNA test, the other arm, the one not holding her wrist, looped around her waist, pulling her lower body flush against another lower body.

Yerim rapidly blinked.

She didn't know what was happening, but something warm was pressed up against her.

And then lips landed on her and stayed there.

In the five seconds that those pair of lips chose her as its destination, Yerim finally realized that...

Jungkook was kissing her.

His lips weren't moving, no lip-biting, no gentle coaxing, no tongue action. In fact, it was unyielding, stiff, and hard - they might as well be unconscious because nothing would change - but it was still a lip, a body part with blood and nerves. And it was warm and soft, a pillow to melt in.

Yerim was kissing her boss, her arrogant, rude, and uncaring boss.

Corrections: her arrogant, rude, and uncaring boss was touching lips with her.

Abruptly, Yerim jerked back, although she didn't make it far because his muscle-clad arms were still clamped around her body. Her chest heaved up and down, though it wasn't a product of lust; no, it was a product of rage. White-hot rage. She looked up at Jungkook, about to slap the shit out of him, when she realized that his attention was already not on her. He also wore a very uneasy smile.

"Marie," he greeted with a nod.

"Hey!" A chirpy female voice greeted him back. "Who would've thought I would run into you here?"

"Yeah." Jungkook's laugh was weak and not sincere at all. "Who would've thought?"

She gasped. "Are you here for the peaches?" Clap of her hands. "They sell the most delicious peaches here, even though they're only a dollar each."

Any other time, Yerim would've rolled her eyes - rich people and their pretentiousness - but she was still too busy trying to figure out this situation. Why did Jungkook kiss her? Why was she still in his arms? Why was Jungkook so rigid, like he had just bumped into his strongest enemy?

"Definitely. That's why I come here, too."

"Really!?" Marie squealed. "We should come together the next-"

"Actually," Jungkook interrupted, tugging Yerim even closer, whose jaw dropped lower. It was a good thing Marie wasn't looking at her because the sight would not be pretty. "I'm here with my girlfriend, so..."

Silence.

Then, either finally noticing Yerim in his embrace or choosing to acknowledge her presence, Marie asked, her voice more subdued, "And you are the girlfriend?"

For a second, Yerim glared up at Jungkook, wanting nothing more than to knee him in the balls, but when he looked down with obvious panic in his eyes, her will to murder disappeared. She couldn't kill, yet, not when he was staring at her like he was drowning and she was his life jacket. She couldn't be heartless like him, no matter how hard she tried.

Pulling herself together, Yerim spun around and put on a genuine smile. Mostly because Marie seemed nice, albeit oblivious. Partly because she wanted to warn her to stop pursuing him before it was too late. He's not the angel you think he is. "Nice to meet you. I'm Yerim."

Against her back, Jungkook sagged in relief.

"Oh." Marie blinked, stepping back. "Oh. I..." She glanced at Jungkook. "I didn't know. You should've told me."

He tightened his arm. "We only started dating recently."

Yerim wasn't a lie detector, but she could see the effort that it took for Marie to put a smile on her face. It wobbled, wavered a bit. Marie waved a hand, saying with as much enthusiasm as before, although it was weaker, "Well, it was nice seeing you here! I'll see you later. Bye, Yerim, it was nice to meet you."

Then, she was gone.

The moment she disappeared from view, Yerim shoved Jungkook off of her. He must have no expected the push to be forceful because he stumbled back, crashing into the peach bin, the plastic bag of peaches in his hand thunking against the black plastic.

"You-" Yerim sputtered, ready to commit bodily harm. "You imbecile. You pervert. You evil, evil, evil bastard!"

Jungkook's face had already morphed back into its resting bored face.

"I'm sorry."

"That's all?" She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. "I deserve compensation for the emotional whiplash that-"

Jungkook moved closer to her, and Yerim, who was prepared now, jumped back and put up her arms in defense. "Don't you dare. Move back."

However, instead of listening, he shoved the plastic bag into her hands. "Take this. I'll buy them for you. Thank you for playing along."

She dumbly let him hand her the peaches.

And then, without a single explanation or even a statement about the kiss that had just happened, the asshole headed towards the cash registers.
