Chapter Seven

"I have an idea."

Emily looked up from her book. "What?"

"Send me back."

Emily set her book down on the table. "What are you talking about, Trey?"

"The night mom died. Take me back in time."

"What makes you think I can do that?"

"Don't underestimate yourself."

"And why would you want to do that?" she asked with a sigh. Because she probably could. She had read about time travel in some of her spell books. If she was strong enough she could probably make it happen. She would probably need the others and draw on their powers but she could probably make it happen. And that scared her.

"Because that's when Max took me. And when Tony became a vampire. Maybe that night is the key to this whole thing."

"And maybe it isn't!" Emily exclaimed. If she was able to send him back in time and they were wrong she couldn't even fathom the consequences of that.

"I have to try something!" he growled frustrated.

"You could try telling us the truth."

"About what?" he asked frowning in confusion.

"Who it is?"

"Why tell you? What else are you going to do? You're not doing anything about it now."

"Uh, excuse me?" she said gesturing to the books.

He laughed, "You're not going to find him in there."

"Then where?"

He sighed. "You're not powerful enough to go against him, Emily."

"That would be for me to decide."

"And I don't want to put you in that position," he said seriously.

"Stop trying to protect me!"

"Like you protect Tony?"

"Don't change the subject, Demetrio! Tell me and tell me now!" she looked him hard in the eyes. "Tell me!" She shouted.

"Salvatore," he said in an almost whisper.

"What?"

"Salvatore. You know..."

"Your uncle. Yes...I know," she said putting her hand to her head.

"Your brother."

"Eliana's," she corrected

"You are Eliana."

She waved her hand. "It's complicated. I am not her. Yet there's some of her spirit in me," she explained then shook her head, "But Why? Why's Eliana's brother doing this to us?"

"He's angry."

"Nah, really?!" she said sarcastically. "Alright, for what?"

"For Tony treating you bad as a kid, for him not listening to Max when he warned him about the plague, for breaking the pact between Max and my grandparents."

"Which was?"

"When Tony didn't want anything to do with Eliana, they all thought the betrothal was not going to happen. Eliana's parents agreed with Max that he could marry her if Tony decided not to go through with the betrothal."

"I know all that. But he did marry her. What does that have to do with Salvatore?"

"It ruined everything for Max and Salvatore."

"What is everything?"

"Don't you remember? Salvatore died several years before my mother and Tony got married."

Emily frowned. "But..."

"He became a vamp."

"Okay...so what was between him and Massi...o-hhhhhhh."

"Yeah, Salvatore sired Max. You know, turned him into a vampire."

"Okay. I get that but how does Salvatore and Massi becoming vamps have to do with ruining plans with Massi marrying...o-h!" She said pointing to Trey.

"Exactly. The vineyard. Being dead, Salvatore had no claim to it. It now belonged to Eliana's offspring."

"Or her husband if they couldn't have children."

"Bingo."

"So, Salvatore wanted Massi to marry Eliana and take over the vineyard. But Tony changed all that."

"Salvatore accepted it at first. After all, he truly did love my mother and didn't totally mind my taking over the vineyard one day. It was hard for him but he was dealing with it. But then the plague happened. Sal sent Max to warn Tony to get us out of Italy. But Tony didn't. He didn't even think of it. Why would he? Where else would he go? He never knew any other place than home."

"And then you all got sick. Your grandparents on both sides died. And Eliana..."

"If I went back to that night..."

"No, Trey."

"But maybe I can stop it from ever happening. At least for me and Tony. Before we became vampires. We would die eventually. Naturally. Sal could have the land then. Or we could just give it to him! Or maybe if you sent me back sooner I can get my family to leave Italy before the plague. It would stop this all from happening. Your parents wouldn't be killed...it'd change everything, Emily! I can't go back any earlier than that. It'll be hard enough being six..."

"No! Absolutely not, it's too dangerous!"

"Give me a chance to make things right!"

"I am giving you a chance! By saying no. You could be killed. No one has ever accomplished a time travel spell successfully. None that we know about anyway. I could send you anywhere in time; to the wrong time, I mean. Or you could simply disappear forever like you never even existed. We don't know what will happen. Or it could completely mess with the time and space continuum like all the movies say and blow up the earth. I won't do it!"

"You once told me all I had to do was ask. I'm asking now. Help me."

"Not in the way you ask. It doesn't always work that way."

"Then how?!" he yelled "How else can you help me? Because that's all I can come up with to stop this from ever happening."

"I don't know. But we'll think of something."

Trey was quiet for a minute. "I hope you're right. We'll talk more later. Just please, sleep on it," he said getting up and kissed her on the cheek.

"Uh, hi," Sam said entering the room. "Sorry, am I interrupting..."

"Not at all," Trey said with a smile. "I was just leaving."

"You don't have to leave on my account."

"Actually, um, Samantha."

"You don't have to say anything, Trey," Sam said.

"No, I, uh, Em?" Trey said looking over at her.

She got up. "I have to check on dinner. Excuse me," she said leaving the room.

"Look, it's not a big deal. We kissed. You just broke up with Raven. Your "vamp charms" went out of whack. I get it. I'm a big girl, Trey."

"I'm sorry."

"It's fine."

"I can't help feeling like I took advantage."

"You didn't. I have something called free will, you know."

"Oh, you do?" he asked with a smile.

"Yes," she said putting up her chin.

"I like what you can do with your free will," he said kissing her cheek. "But why waste it on the wrong guy?" he asked with a sigh putting his hands lightly on her waist.

"What do you mean?"

"I think Georgie-boy down there might like a little taste of that free will himself."

She crossed her arms. "Oh?"

"Like you didn't know," Trey said with a laugh.

"I don't know about George."

"What? You only like the bad boys?" he asked with a grin.

"He's too good for me."

"Baby, he's not good enough for you," he said tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear and kissed her cheek.

"Emily, I..." George said coming up the stairs looking at a book and then stopped to look at them. "Oh..." he said surprised and turned and went down the stairs.

"Does nobody knock anymore?" Trey muttered. "What's up, George?" Trey asked rolling back on his heels and stuck his hands in his pockets.

George stopped halfway down the stairs. "I was just looking for Em," he said not turning around.

"She's in the kitchen checking on dinner."

"Thanks," George said going down the steps and out the door.

"You think he thinks...?" Sam asked Trey.

"Yup! Absolutely," Trey said chuckling.

"Oh, geez," She said putting a hand to her forehead.

"We could..." he said with a smile and put a hand around her waist drawing her close.

"I do like George," She said slapping at his hand.

"Better than me?"

"Than anyone."

He was quiet a few seconds and then took a deep breath. "Then what are you doing standing here shooting the breeze with me?"

"Thank you," she said standing up on tiptoe to kiss his cheek.

"Anytime, sweetheart," he said watching her bounce down the steps. He sighed. So much for that, he told the pang in his heart. Maybe he was wrong after all. Not all of his dreams came true; though it would have been nice to have someone like Sam for himself. He knew his being with Raven was pointless as he could see her with his father when they both realized how stubborn and stupid they were both being. But Sam...he had been sure... He sighed again. If he was wrong about that...he shook his head, he knew he wasn't wrong. He couldn't be wrong; his dream had been so vivid. But there was something off. Really off because Sam wasn't like how she was in his dream. And if he thought about it, he really wasn't that attracted to Sam. Sure she was pretty, fun to be around, fun to flirt with, but he couldn't see himself being with her.

There always was one other possibility, he thought as a memory suddenly came to mind. A secret once told to him. He looked up surprised at his own thought. He thought back to the dreams that he had over the past view nights. And the visions. Oh, holy shit, he thought realization flooding him. He took a deep breath to calm himself. Things were going to get much worse before they got better. But at least there was a possibility that they would get better. At least for him for a little while, he thought with a grin as he bounded down the stairs.
