Chapter Five
"That was weird," Raven told Tony when they adjourned the meeting.
"I don't like this," Tony said putting an arm around her. He led her down the hall to the basement door and down the stairs.
"Where are we going?"
"To my lair, hahaha," he said in a sinister voice as he took her hand and led her through the living room and into his bedroom.
"Tony."
"I want to talk to you. Alone," he answered leading her down the hall and into the wine cellar.
"You could have asked."
"Not in front of everyone," he said. He led her through the rows of wine bottles and it seemed to her like they were walking forever. He led her into a corner and opened a wall by pressing on it.
"Cool."
"Emily's grandparents were into cool," he said leading her into the opening. The door slid shut behind them and they were engulfed in darkness.
"I can't see in the dark."
"There's a lantern on the left wall." He ducked as a flame leapt from her over his head and into the lantern. "Watch it!"
"Nice reflexes."
"I need to with you around," he said taking the lantern down and handing it to her.
Raven looked a head of them to a long dark staircase. "You're kidding me."
"I need to be away from here. Please."
"Alright," he said taking a step forward. "I feel like I'm sneaking out of my parents' house."
"Our mom's," Tony said, and then added "Emily" when she looked at him puzzled.
"What's going on? You and Em have always been buddy-buddy e ven after you guys broke up. Lately, you two barely speak."
"She hurt me. Deeply. I'm still trying to get over her keeping that Demetrio was alive from me. God, I can't believe she kept that from me. He's my son, Rave. My son."
"I'm sorry. She should have told you. Ray should have too."
"Seems like everything's changing with all of us."
"Emily's not perfect no matter how much she wants to be or pretends to be."
"I never expected her to be."
"Yes, you do."
"I don't."
"You think of her like your own personal guardian angel and that's not fair."
He smiled as they stepped out of the staircase and into sand. "She saved me from a lot of things over the years."
"She would have done the same for anyone. In fact, she has. Hey, where are we?" she asked looking around. He pointed to an opening in the rock wall. She moved to and it and walked through. She instantly knew where she was. They were on their private beach below the house. "I love this place at night," she said as she followed him as he went over to a group of rocks by the water and walked up them.
"Sometimes I think this is the only place pure left in the world," he said quietly as he sat down.
"Tell me what's wrong," she said sitting next to him and put her head on his shoulder.
"Everything."
"Like?"
"Trey broke up with you because of me."
Raven straightened and tucked a long strand of hair behind her ear. "That's not entirely true."
He chuckled. "Don't bullshit me, Rave, I get enough from them," he said gesturing with his shoulder up to the house.
"Okay, you were part of the reason we broke up. He's just not comfortable with the fact that you have feelings for me and that I..." She broke off looking over at him.
"That hard to say?"
"I have feelings for you, Tony, I always have," she said looking away. "But...."
"But you just want to be friends," he finished.
"I just don't want things to be complicated."
"Things are complicated!" He yelled gesturing to the house.
"I know," She said putting her hands over her face. "God, I know."
"I know that you like Trey and if you want to be with him..."
"I don't know what I want, Tony, I really don't," she said tears streaming down her face.
"I didn't mean for this to be the conversation. I don't want to cause you any grief over me. I'm not worth it."
"Tony," she said grabbing his arm.
"Rave, this is all about me. Everything that has happened to everyone, Eliana. Demetrio, Katarina, Emily's parents, your parents, Massi. I don't want anyone else to pay for whatever I did to this...whoever it is."
"Tony, you couldn't have done anything to cause whatever this is," she said shaking him by his arm. "Whoever is doing this is psycho. They just want to cause pain."
"Mission accomplished," he said running his hands through his hair.
"Why aren't you talking to Emily about this?"
"She's trying to protect me. Like always. She knows something and she's not telling me. I have to do something, Rave. Trey and her? They know something. I know that they do."
"What do you think they know?"
"Who's doing this to us."
"Well, why aren't they telling us? Let's go get the bastard!" She said getting up.
"They don't want to see us hurt," he said standing up with her.
"Screw that. He has to pay. He killed my parents, Tony."
"I know. And he will pay. I just don't know who it is."
"Make them tell!"
"They're not going to tell me."
"You think they'll tell me?"
"Maybe," he said with a shrug.
"You don't think Emily's not watching us now? Listening?" she asked looking around.
"She respects my privacy."
Raven laughed. "She respects your privacy yet she won't tell you who's trying to kill you?"
"She's a strange girl isn't she?" he said with a smile.
"I don't know how you can joke like a time like this."
"Will you help me, Rave? Help me find out who's doing this so I can handle it myself?"
"I can't let you do that."
He took her hands and knelt down. He looked up at her. "Rave, I've lived a very, very long time. Long past what any human has any right to have. If I must die for the little time that all of you have here, I will."
"Tony," she said tears streaming again.
"Don't cry," he said standing up and wiped her eyes.
"I don't want you to," she said with a sniffle.
"Well, I'll try not to let that happen, huh?" he asked rubbing her arm lightly.
"I wish you wouldn't joke about this."
He kissed her cheek. "Everything's going to be okay."
"If Emily's protecting you that means she sees..."
"Don't," he said putting his forehead on hers.
"I will find out if you let me help you."
"No."
"That's the only way I'll agree to help you. And if you don't let me help you; you can bet your ass I'm going to help Emily and Trey protect you."
He laughed and kissed her nose quickly. "Guess it's best to have you on my side."
"Both ways are your side," she said hugging him.
"Hi," Raven said to Emily.
Emily looked up from the book she was reading as she reclined on her yellow couch in her bedroom living area. "I don't know who it is."
"Shoot," Raven said flopping on the couch next to her. "I hate when you read my mind," she said crossing her arms.
"You still haven't learned to build up protections around your thoughts. They tumbled out as if you say them out loud."
"What do you know?"
"I have feelings. Bad feelings. I think Trey knows who it is. Maybe what's coming for us. But he's not talking. And he's really good at blocking me."
"If only I had the upper hand there," Raven said thoughtfully.
"You still do."
"No, he'd rather not be around me."
"It is an awkward situation, Rave."
"I know," Raven said running a hand through her hair.
"He'll talk when he's ready. When he feels he can trust us."
"I'm just worried we may not have that kind of time."
"We have to show him that we trust him and then he'll feel he can trust us."
"But I do trust him. He knows that," Raven insisted.
"Jake doesn't. Ray doesn't. I don't think George does either. And Sam...that's a whole 'nother story."
"Did he really attack her?"
"Not attack really. Pursued more like."
"Hunted," Raven clarified.
"Pursu...yeah, I guess...hunted," Emily admitted.
"Do you think that someone made him do that? Or is it just the adjustment of not taking live blood?"
"I don't know, Rave. Believe or not, I don't have all the answers."
"I wish you did, sometimes."
"Me too."
"Not to change the subject but I guess I should go see about getting dinner ready since it's my turn and I'm starved."
"Pizza's good," Emily suggested.
"And you wonder why I love you," Raven said kissing her cheek.
"Love you too. Go check with Sam see what kind she likes."
"Will do."
