Chapter Eighteen

A hawk fluttered into a frenzied landing reaching Trey who was huddled up by the bookstore door. His arms wrapped around his legs his head bent over his knees rocking himself in self-comfort.

"Demetrio! What happened?" Tony asked as he transformed from the hawk into human form.

Trey was shaking. Tony tore open a bag of blood he brought and held it to Trey's lips. Trey bolted upright smelling it.

"Easy," Tony said holding him by both shoulders as Trey drank it urgently.

Tony tossed him another bag and Trey drank it with hands still shaking.

"Are you okay, son?"

Trey nodded.

They heard the screeching of tires, a car door slam and then hurried footsteps.

"Em!" Tony called. "Here!"

Emily stepped in view of Trey.

"No!" Trey said looking away.

"You won't hurt me, Trey."

"I said, no!"

Tony handed him another bag of blood which Trey drank quickly.

"Now?" Tony asked looking him over. Trey put his head to his knees and breathed. "You need fresh blood, Trey."

He nodded.

"I'll cover you," Tony said gesturing her into the doorway.

Emily pulled her hair away from her neck.

"I can't control..." Trey said, his voice shaking as bad as his body.

"It's ok, Tony will pull you away."

"Papi," Trey moaned.

"It's alright, son, I'm here," Tony told him squatting next to him.

Emily moved to him. "Drink , Trey."

Trey wiped his eyes. "Why? Why'd he do this to me?"

"Trey, this is how you have to eat now. If you don't eat you'll starve," Emily said

"No. If he doesn't eat he'll kill to eat," Tony said.

Trey covered his head with his arms. "I'm a monster. A monster."

"Trey," Emily pulling at his arms. "You're not a monster. Honey, come on, you just need to eat. Then you'll feel better."

"He's weak... almost like a newborn vamp that just got some control but not quite..." Tony said confused.

"A spell?"

"It's got to be," Tony said. "He's too old and experienced for this."

Trey groaned as if in pain.

"Demetrio, let her give it to you!" Tony yelled.

Trey spun and knocked Emily to the ground covering her body with his own.

"Easy," Tony said putting a hand on Trey's back as Trey drank from her neck.

"Okay, that's enough," Tony said pulling his shoulders back. Trey fought against him continuing to drink. Emily moaned beneath him. "Demetrio!" he yelled pulling him off of her.

"Em," Tony said softly sitting next to her. He pulled out a handkerchief and held it to her throat.

She stared at the sky and concentrated on breathing.

"God, Em, I'm sorry," Trey came rushing over.

"Are you better?" Tony asked.

He nodded and sat down next to her moving Tony's hand off her throat. He put his hand to her throat and it began to glow.

Emily sat up and hugged Trey.

"I'm sorry, Em, so sorry," he whispered wiping tears away.

"Trey, what happened tonight?" She asked wiping her own tears away.

He shook his head. "Will you take me to Brian?"

"You want to see Brian?" Emily asked.

"Please."

"Okay, let's go," she said helping him up.

"What happened?" Brian said helping Trey into the house.

"He won't tell us. He wanted you," Emily said.

Brian looked at him as they helped him to the couch.

"Ok. Why don't you just leave him here? I'll bring him home later."

"I want to know what's going on with my son," Tony said angrily.

"If he wanted you to know he would have told you. Wouldn't he?" Brian said firmly and loudly for Trey's benefit. "Let me talk to him," he said in lowered voice.

"Fine," Tony said taking a step towards Trey. "Talk to him," Tony told Trey firmly.

Trey nodded.

"Do you want me to stay?" Emily asked Trey.

Trey shook his head.

"Ok. You know how to reach me if you do," she said coming over and kissed him on the cheek.

"So, do you want to tell me what's going on?" Brian asked when they left.

"Not particularly."

"Does it have to do anything with Sarah?"

"No, not really," Trey said brushing some lint off his jeans.

"Then what?" Brian said sitting across from him. "Is it a vamp thing or a power thing?"

Trey shrugged.

"If you didn't want to talk to me why did you ask them to bring you here?"

Trey shrugged.

"Ok, you don't have to talk about it. What about Sarah?"

Trey looked up.

"How is she?" Brian said looking away.

"Good."

Brian nodded. "And her powers?"

"She's afraid of them."

Brian rubbed his face. "Damn."

"It's not your fault."

"If she had me around she wouldn't be. I would have taught her...like Emily."

"You didn't have a choice."

"Like, you don't have a choice being a vamp."

Trey chuckled. "You really are a shrink."

Brian smiled. "I try. So how can I help?"

Trey shook his head. "You can't."

"Trey, sometimes talking about things that you don't want to talk about can help. It gets it off your chest so it doesn't eat at your insides."

"I tried talking."

"To who?"

"Sarah."

"And what happened?"

"I got upset and I wanted to..." Trey looked away.

"O-hhhh," Brian said understandingly and took a deep calming breath.

"I wouldn't!" Trey got up quickly.

"I know you wouldn't...on purpose."

Trey drug his hands through his hair. "I think he's weakened me somehow. I'm not myself. I breakdown like a freakin' newborn. A freakin' newborn. I'm over four hundred years old!" He ranted. "Can you do anything to protect her...from me?" he asked as he took a breath to calm down. "I can't make a spell myself to work against myself."

Brian sighed. "I can try casting a spell, Trey. But I don't know if it'll work on you," Brian paced the floor and then looked up as if he had a thought.

Trey nodded in understanding. "Cast it."

Brian nodded. "I'll need your blood."

Trey slit his wrist with a fang.

Brian wrinkled his face. "Watch the wife's carpet," he said grabbing Trey's arm. "Or Salvatore and his black magic will be the least of our worries."

They were quiet the silence eerie to both of them since most of the time they could hear other people's thoughts and since they were both telepathic and knew how to block each other it was quiet.

"Does she know you're a vampire?" Brian finally asked into the silence.

Trey shook his head. "I didn't want to scare her with everything at once."

"What does she know?"

"That I'm a telepath....that I can blow things up."

Brian turned to look at him. "You can?"

Trey took a seat in front of him. "You have no idea what you have sitting in front of you," Trey said quietly.

Brian looked at him and wiped his face. "You said you were powerful but..."

Trey let his guards down. "You can feel it now?"

"Jesus, Trey," Brian said getting up quickly and fearfully.

"You want to slay me now."

"I...Jesus, Trey!" Brian said angrily.

"I wouldn't blame you," Trey said. "I wouldn't stop you."

Brian turned. "Don't be ridiculous," he said taking a deep breath.

"If he turns me against you and..."

"Trey."

"He is capable of making me turn evil against my will. He's been practicing black magic since before I was even born, Brian. If that happens you have to, Brian. You're the only one strong enough to take me down."

"We'll cross that bridge if we come to it," Brian said quietly.

"He's stronger than us both combined."

"That's impossible."

Trey shook his head.

"I've never..." Brian shook his head. "We're smarter. And there are more of us. Together, all of us, we can take him down."

"Maybe with the rest of the kids...maybe...but I don't want to put them in that position. I can't endanger them. I won't."

"We'll find a way, Trey."

They sat across from each other each reflecting in the quiet of the night. They could both hear the dreams of the children and Brian's wife in the bedrooms upstairs, the neighbors next door but the dreams were mere specs of dust on their telepathic scopes. They were able to brush them aside. There was something comforting about not hearing the thoughts of the person sitting right across from you.

"I feel better," Trey said getting up after awhile.

"Thank you, Trey."

Trey nodded. He walked to the door and stopped. "She knows about you."

Brian froze.

"She's enrolling in your classes to get to know you."

Brian nodded.

"She doesn't understand but she doesn't hate you, Brian."

Brian took a deep breath."What have you told her..." he cleared his throat. "about me?"

"Just that you sent me to watch over her."

"Trey."

"You wanted me to be honest with her, right?"

"I...yes. You're right."

"When she can handle more, I'll let you know."

"I trust you, Trey. That's why I asked you."

"Do you mind if..."

"What?"

"Um..." Trey looked away.

"Are you serious?!" Brian exclaimed reading his thought.

"I care about her. A lot."

Brian sucked in his breath. "I handled Tony with Emily, Jake and Emily, I guess now I can handle you with Sarah."

"Thanks," Trey said walking out of the living room.

"You're welcome." Brian said leading him to the door.

"Oh. By the way," Trey said stopping," do you know about Samantha and George?"

"Oh, geez," Brian groaned.

Trey patted him on the shoulder as he stepped out. "At least you've got thirteen years until Hope starts dating."

"If I'm so lucky."

"Take care of her," Brian sent telephatically to him as Trey got in his car. Tony had followed Emily and Trey when they came to Brian's in her car.

"With my life," Trey sent back looking up at him before he slipped into the car. "I promise."
