Chapter 7 - Annabeth
A/n: This chapter begins just as their third class starts. I apologize for jumping around so much, I'm just trying to get many sides of the same story.
PoV: Annabeth
As I took a seat by Percy, I watched Sophie and her friends walk into the Chemistry room, Sophie talking with Hazel and Leo. I saw them wave to each other before splitting up, with Hazel and Leo sitting at the table in front of us, and the others moving to the back.
Minutes later, a teacher walked in. "Good morning, class!" She exclaimed cheerfully, "For those of you who don't know me, I am Miss Cadence." I could hear Sophie quietly gasp behind me before abruptly stopping, "I have been the Chemistry teacher here for many years, and I know what I'm doing. What I say is what all scientists are saying. Understand?" The room was so quiet I could hear them nod, "Good. Now, today, we will be talking about Physics and the pull of Gravity."
I heard someone - who I assumed was Sophie or Keefe -start snickering. Luckily, the teacher didn't seem to notice.
"Please open your books to page 289. Here it describes gravity as the force that keeps us in the Earth. It draws us to its center. I see we already have a question. Did you not talk about this in your old school?"
Sophie stood up and placed her hands on the table, "Actually, Miss Cadence, we did. Which is why I was curious. If gravity keeps us in the Earth, how is it possible for airplanes to rise?"
" Simple: the force of the plane is more than the force of gravity. "
"But if it's greater than the force of gravity, why does it not just fly into space? " Sophie asked. (Where is she going with this?)
"Because when we change the amount of force to match that of gravity 's, it keeps us from moving up or down." Miss Cadence seemed to be getting annoyed.
"So, you're saying that depending on how much force we use, we can defy gravity?"
" I'm a sense, yes. "
"So, when we jump, is coming back to Earth a lack of our own force, or an increase in gravity's? "
"I suppose it would be lack of your own, since how much pull gravity has on you is determined by your mass."
" So, say normal person like... Annabeth! " I froze at the sound of my name, "Say she were able to jump and never come back down unless she wanted to? Would that be lack of gravity or increase in our personal force?"
"Why are you asking questions about an unrealistic scenario?" Miss Cadence asked.
"You said you're quoting most scientists, right? Not to mention gravity has nothing to do with chemistry! "
Miss Cadence huffed, "Well, you are correct that it's not chemistry, but I thought I start with some common knowledge since you are new here. Clearly, I was mistaken. As for your question, your asking if someone could control when they came down after jumping, I guess that would be increased force in our part, and maybe a slight lack of gravitational pull. Why?"
" I was just curious. I wanted to see if you though it was possible for humans to fly. "
I was surprised, and the teacher was too. "When did you ask about flying?" Miss Cadence asked.
Sophie grinned, "Every question I asked was giving me information on my question. You answered without me needing to ask that question in particular. And, based off of what you said, you have confirmed it's possible. Thank you. " Sophie took a seat, signifying she was done.
Miss Cadence looked at her, astonished. I was surprised, too. Now that I thought about it, I realized everything Sophie asked had been valid with the question on flight. My brain couldn't stop working and I started writing down everything going through my brain. Sophie was right! If we had less gravity or more force, normal humans could fly!
Normal.
My brain immediately went to Jason. He flew all the time, and none of us really questioned it, being demigods and all. Now, I was suddenly curious about what Sophie had been getting at. I couldn't get it out of my brain as we kept reading.
---time skip-------
As we made our way to lunch, I met up with Jason, Frank, and Piper. Leo, Hazel, and Percy were with me, and Sophie was ahead of us with her friends. All of them grabbed fruit and sat down. I sat next to Sophie with my hamburger.
"Why'd you all just get fruit? " I asked as Percy sat next to me with his entirely blue meal. How he got that much blue food, I'll never know.
"At our old school, we were only allowed to eat fruit and vegetables. After a while, it sorta grew on us." Sophie explained .
"Huh. What was this old school called?" I asked.
" Oh, uh. It didn't, uh, really have a name. " Sophie mumbled. "It was the only school in the area, so everyone went there and just called it 'School.'"
"That would suck!" Percy exclaimed , his mouth full of food. I was really going to have to talk with him about commenting with his mouth full.
"It did." Sophie whispered. " I mean, it wasn't all bad, just a few things. "
Sophie looked up as the loudspeaker turned on,"Sophie Foster. Please come to Mr Bavin's room."
Sophie sighed and got up from the table, whispering something to Keefe as she turned and walked away.
The table was now in awkward silence. Sophie 's friends didn't say anything, they just looked at each other, while I tried to start conversation among my friends. Soon lunch was over and all of us besides Piper, who was taking French, has P.E.
Biana was the first to stand and head to the gym when the bell rang. She stood up and turned around the corner so quickly I was sure she was running. Curious, I hurried to throw away my food and raced to the locker rooms.
When I entered, I saw Biana doing Sophie's hair and whispering in they 're strange language. "Uh... Hi?" I asked, causing Biana to jump and Sophie to turn around.
" Oh, uh, hi Annabeth. You have P.E. too? "
"Yeah... "
We stopped talking as Biana kept doing Sophie's hair. I couldn't quite tell what it was, but it looked complicated. "Um, why are you doing your hair so fancy for P.E. at a regular high school? "
Sophie sighed, "I would tell you that we had to at our old school, but I'm sick of lying."
" Um, what?
Slowly, Sophie pushed some of her hair away from her face, revealing large, hand shaped burns.
Chapter 7!!! I'm sorry for the cliff hanger, but I needed to end it here so I can explain from Sophie's end. anyway, I hope you enjoyed, and I will see you later! Bye!
