Chapter 4: Voices - Dex

Okay, I was gonna do a Fitz chapter here, but I've been really behind on updating (like, almost a week behind) and I don't really understand Fitz's mindset, so imma do Dex. Sorry everyone who wanted a Fitz chapter! Anyways, story!!

PoV :Dex

"Alright!" Percy exclaimed as we sat around a ping pong table , "I may not be Annabeth, but I can come up with half decent plans, too!"

" That's what you think. " I heard a black haired boy in dark clothes and a skull ring mutter.

Percy kept his expression happy, "Nico, we're trying to stay happy. Be positive. Unless that's not your ty-"

"I'm out!" Nico interrupted , standing up abruptly and walking out of the room. There was silence as he left only for everyone -besides me, Fitz, and Chiron- to burst out into laughed as the door closed behind him.

"Whaaat's happening?" I asked Fitz, who sat on my left. He just shrugged, so I turned to Hazel on my right, " Can you explain? "

"Long story," Hazel gasped between laughs, " Basically, Nico admitted a while ago that he used to have a crush on Percy, but he doesn't anymore because Percy's 'not his type '. Now, Percy won't stop bringing it up, and, while it annoys him, it's pretty funny. "

I smiled slightly, thinking of how Keefe couldn't get over Tam's hair and I couldn't get over... well, pretty much anything about Fitz. Those stupid little arguments no one could drop, but they're still pretty funny for everyone else.

"Now, seriously, onto the plan," Percy said after everyone has calmed down. Suddenly , Frank raised his hand, "Yes, Zhang?"

" Um, first of all, why do we need a plan? " A weird, Asian looking dude - Frank asked, "And secondly, who are they?" He pointed at me and Fitz.

" A: I'll tell you why soon, and B:These people are Fitz and Dex. " He gestured towards us in turn as he said our names, "They're... new campers."

Fitz waved and I tried to smile. "Hi!" Fitz exclaimed in a surprisingly good American English accent.

A girl with choppy brown hair and looked at Fitz and smiled, " I'm Piper. Have you been claimed yet? " Fitz and I must've looked clueless because her smile wavered slightly. "Do you know who your godly parent is? " she clarified.

I nodded, even though Fitz looked hesitant, "Yeah."

" Well then, can you tell us? "

This time I shook my head, "Nope. You wouldn't understand."

Piper rested her chin in her hand . "Why not?" She asked. Something about her tone was different, but I couldn't place it, "You know you can tell us anything."

I shook my head again, much to everyone's surprise, for some reason, " As I said, you wouldn't understand. " Piper leaned back in her chair, her jaw dropped in shock. As I looked around the table, I saw shocked expressions from everyone except Percy, who was trying to stifle his laughter. "Um... did I do something?"

Percy finally burst in a fit of giggles at my question, "Oh, of course not, Dex! Nothing important! Besides the fact that you just ignored charmspeak!"

" Excuse me? " Fitz asked, causing Percy to laugh even harder.

"Gods of Olympus, you don't know?!" Percy exclaimed as he stopped laughing, earning him a cautious look from Hazel, "okay, okay! Charmspeak is an ability given to the children of Aphrodite, in particular. Some others have it, but let's ignore that for now. Charmspeak can allow the user to control another's actions with their voice." I felt myself stiffen as I thought of Councillor Aliana and the whole thing with Prentice, "And you just shrugged it off like it was no big deal!"

" Um, are you guys okay? " someone asked, drawing my attention to a blonde haired boy with a scar over his lip, "You both just got really pale. "

I swallowed hard before nodding , not entirely trusting my voice to say anything.  " Um, Percy?" Piper asked, drawing everyone's attention to the current situation, "Plan?"

" Right! " Percy's expression became serious, which didn't seem common, judging by the others' sudden stiffness, "Okay, so, a short time ago, a very trusted friend of ours told us about an upcoming attack."

 " Who's this friend? " Frank asked.

"I swore on the River Styx I wouldn't say their name," Percy denied , "But I know that their word can be trusted. Anyways, this attack will be coming from enemies we haven't faced before. No, Jason, they're not monsters." Percy continued, looking at the blonde boy who' d just opened his mouth to say something, "They're..." He looked at me and Fitz for support.

I spoke up, being the only elf besides Sophie who knew anything about human culture, "I guess assassins is the closest thing you could use to describe them. Arsonists? Cultists? Serial killers?"

Everyone looked at me in what seemed to be a mix of shock and awe. "Hold on, what?" Frank asked.

I shrugged, "Honestly, I'm probably over exaggerating, but it's the best way to describe them. It's difficult to put it into words. "

"Hold on, you've met these... potential attackers?" Jason asked, a strange emotion in his eyes, like a mix of anger, pity, and vengence, all masked in calm.

Nodding, I replied, "Yeah. Fitz and I both have. They've, um, done things to us and our friends, mostly because they're really interested in my cousin." I quickly clamped my mouth shut, before I said too much.

"What things?" Hazel asked, her voice shaking as fear shone in her gold eyes. The strange color reminded me of Sophie's weird eyes, but I scolded myself for getting sidetracked.

"Mostly things that involve... life or death scenarios. That's all I can say."

The demigods shuddered. "Well, you'll be fine here." Hazel said, putting her hand on my shoulder.

I gave her a grateful smile, when suddenly Sophie's voice filled my mind. It was strange, just repeating my name over and over. " Um, sorry, " I said as I shaking stood from the table, "I have to go." I turned and ran out of the room, her voice pounding in my skull.

I dashed into the Posiden cabin, shutting the door behind me, my breath shaky and shallow. Putting my hands over my ears in a vain attempt to block the noise, I carefully made my way over to my bunk. By the time I reached it, tears has started spilling into my cheeks.

I could barely hear my own thoughts over the sound of Sophie's voice. The say it was so repetitive, I could tell it wasn't actually her. It was harsh. Sharp. Unlike Sophie's normally gentle voice.

Are you okay? I heard Fitz transmit to me.

Even though the noise I managed to focus on his question and reply with a weak, help.  It was so soft, I didn't know if he'd hear, but, somehow, he must have because, not long after, he opened the door to the cabin. Shutting it behind him, he ran over to me.

"What's wrong?" Fitz asked, his voice muffled by my hands which were still over my ears. It was probably the first time he looked genuinely worried about me. When he realized I couldn't say anything, he reached a hand to my temple, only to quickly remove it seconds later. "What the-"

Suddenly, the door shot open, with Nico and Hazel barging in. "What's going on?!" Hazel exclaimed.

" No no no! Guys shut the door!" Fitz hissed hurriedly.

Nico looked like he was going to make a snarky remark, but when he saw me... I don't know what he was thinking, but he shut the door. "Alright." He said, " Talk."

I saw Fitz moving his mouth, but I couldn't hear what he was saying. The weird imitation of Sophie's voice was getting  louder and faster, and I couldn't even separate everything between the voice and my own thoughts.

I felt my breathing quicken, and my vision blurred, as if the person in my head could keep my eyes from working like they were supposed to. Blobs of color that I could only guess were Hazel and Nico appeared next to what used to be Fitz and was now just a fuzzy image. I couldn't wipe off the tears streaming down my face, and anything they were saying couldn't be heard over the pounding in my head.

Suddenly, it went completely silent. I almost sighed with relief until I heard a voice cackling with laughter. My sight cleared only for a second as I saw Fitz's expression to from worried to panicked. He heard it too.

Thank you, Mr. Dizznee! I recognized the voice, but I couldn't tell who it was. You've made our job a whole lot easier. See you soon!

With another fit of laughter, the world went dark, and I felt myself hit the bed before blacking out.

sorry again for taking so long to update! I was actually going to bring in the whole voice thing later, but, as I said, I couldn't figure out Fitz's mindset. Hopefully I remember to update tomorrow. If I dont, I will try to make my update longer. For now, I will see you later!
