Chapter 29: WHY IS THIS RESCUE TAKING SO LONG?!? - Sophie

A/n: So, I realize that my updating has been inconsistent considering I told you all that I would try to publish one chapter per story a day and that this was supposed to come out yesterday. Honestly, I wrote that before I knew how busy I would actually be this summer, so sorry if it seems that I lied. I really am trying. Anyways, into the story!

PoV: Sophie

"Wait, Phobos?" I asked, trying to stall, " You mean like, Greek God of fear Phobos? "

"That would be me." The man replied.

" Um, didn't you help Annabeth and Piper one time? " Leo pointed out.

"Well, the past is past. Old mistakes can't be corrected."

" Hold on, you think that helping people is a mistake? " Keefe asked on the same mindset as me.

"It is when you're helping your enemy?"

" And, what told you that they were your enemy? " Biana asked, appearing beside Leo.

"Well, let's just say the gods are having a, hmm, change of heart." Phobos replied with an evil grin.

" What does that mean? " Leo asked, but I already knew. I got the feeling Annabeth realized it too, but before I could ask her, Phobos laughed.

"The most clueless of the bunch, I presume. Moonlark, I know you understand. Tell them! They won't believe me."

I looked at my feet as everyone's gazes turned to me. When I glanced up, I saw Biana wearing an understanding grown and Keefe giving me a supporting smile. It didn't help. I was afraid - no, worried. Being afraid gives Phobos power - about what would happen if I admitted. I got the feeling Keefe and Biana didn't actually understand, but I knew I was have to say it at some point. I just wasn't ready yet.

"Um, couldn't you just turn into me and tell them?" I asked, trying to draw the unwanted attention away from me, "It'd have the same effect."

" While you may say that to bring everything back to me, I know you're just afraid of facing the truth. Everyone does at some point. Just get it over with. "

I was about to refuse when I saw his grin grow. "Okay," I said after a short moment. His smile wavered for a moment before steadying again.

#Whatever you do, don't react to what I'm about to say.# I transmitted before I spoke, " Basically, he's saying the Neverseen convinced the gods that demigods and elves are evil and that they're the good guys. "

Phobos' smile fell when no one got angry or frightened. Keefe's obviously fake yawn didn't help the situation either.

"Well, that's not what I expected. Maybe you do have more tricks than I guessed, Moonlark." Phobos spat out the last word like it was trash, but, instead of feeling offended, I actually felt good. I didn't like being called "Moonlark" by that creep, so I was okay with him torturing the word.

Phobos for even more agitated when I started talking, "Well, I mean, I was biologically enhanced, so pretty much everything about me is fake. Kinda like pretty much every wall here. I mean, look at this place! It looks awful, and the walls are all illusions anyway! Seriously! Like, so something with the place!"

Keefe had to stifle a laugh at Phobos's lost expression. He obviously wasn't expecting me to be cocky, and everyone else seemed to pick up on it. At least, Biana did. With Keefe and Leo, you couldn't tell if they were acting or were being serious.

It didn't matter. It has the same effect. Everyone started being brave and cocky. Annabeth even started appearing all over the place to confuse the Greek god even more. "Enough!" He shouted , silencing everyone before he pointed at me, "I know your trying to get out. But you can't. The illusions prevent it. Even if you find a way out of this room, the illusions will lead you back here, elf or not. The only way to leave is by defeating me. "

"Well, that shouldn't be to hard. I mean, you're kinda petty-"

"That's enough from you, Moonlark. " He said, shifting into Alden for a second before switching back. Even though it was so short, it still brought back flashbacks. I felt Keefe grab my hand and a cool blue breeze wiped the fear away. "As for the rest of you," Phobos continued, "you'll suffer the same fate as her. Maybe you'll break sooner." Phobos laughed, but this time it sounded familiar .

It sounded like... I couldn't place it. It was strange, given my photographic memory, but I couldn't remember who it was, or if they were important.

I ignored it and tried to come up with a plan. I had to go fast, since we didn't have that much time, but soon I had a plan with a 37% chance of actually working. It was better than nothing.

"Okay, okay, we get it." I sighed " You show us our worst fears, we break, yada yada, yeah. Look, I just want to know yours!"

Phobos gave me a confused look, "Um, what? "

"Your worst fear! You're constantly saying you can turn into ours, so does that mean your original form is your fear or is it something else? "

"What makes you think the God of fear is afraid of something?"

" The fact that every being has a fear. You showed us ours, uh, prey are scared of predators, predators are scared of humans, humans are scared of what they can't understand. You know, the Fear Tree!"

"Um, I've never heard of a 'Fear Tree' before." Phobos pointed out .

"Basically it's just showing that every part of a living species has a fear. Which means you have one. Denying it will get you nowhere."

"Fine. Um... I guess I'm afraid of my father."

" Wait, Ares? You're afraid of Ares? "

Phobos shrugged, "Well, if I had to pick someone, it'd probably be him." I nodded my head in understanding until I couldn't contain my laughter anymore, "Uh, what's so funny?"

" I'm sorry, it's just, you. Afraid. Of. Ares! If all people, it's Ares! "

"Is there a problem with that?" Phobos asked calmly, but I could see the panic dancing in his eyes.

"Oh no! Let's just go be afraid of my own father! Noting bad about that at all! Why?! "

"Uh, because he can be  jerk!"

" Uh, you want to talk about jerky parents? Go have a chat with Keefe! " I kept laughing as I pointed at a proud looking Keefe.

I snuck a glance up at the ceiling. Phobos was so flustered that he couldn't see the glitching walls. #Everyone, find a reason to join me here. We're getting out of here.#

"Yeah! "Keefe exclaimed cheerfully, moving closer to grab my hand, "I have major daddy issues. Maybe our dads can talk about their horrible parental skills together! "

"Maybe my brother can join that squad!" Biana exclsimed, grabbing onto a hand I couldn't see - probably Annabeth's - an another unseen one grabbed my hand. "And maybe the woman who tossed you into a fireplace, Leo! "

"Maybe." Leo grabbed Keefe's and, " I mean, this is a theoretical, so who knows? "

"You know what isn't imaginary?" I asked Phobos, looking the worried god in the eyes, " We will win. You can't stop us. " We started levitating up until we reached a good enough height to drop from, "Maybe that's why you're so afraid of your father,"  I paused to let the reality sink in, "You know he's right."

With that, we dropped and the void cracked open
