Chapter 27: Why haven't we rescued her yet? - Keefe

A/n: continuing from where the last chapter left off.

PoV: Keefe.

Even with Leo's fire, the tunnel still felt dark. I couldn't tell if that was because it actually was dark, or if it was all the emotional pain radiating off of Sophie. All I knew was that I was glad Biana had offered to help support me as we walked.

The feeling felt strange and new. Usually Empaths couldn't feel pain, but something about this told me that they weren't actually hurting Sophie. Instead, I got the feeling it was much, much worse.

Soon the negative emotions she was feeling were too much. I felt like collapsing, but I did the opposite. I ran. I ran as fast as I could towards the source that I didn't hear Biana calling after me, the others following behind. But I had to find Sophie. If she had emotions, she was still alive, if not for very long, and I had to hurry.

I ran past lots of empty cells until I found one that was open. I burst inside and saw her. It was Sophie. But it didn't feel like her. Her eyes were stuck on the wall and she looked like she hadn't eaten or slept in days.

"Foster?" I whispered so quietly, I didn't think anyone would hear me. Sophie obviously did, because she slightly turned her head towards me, but need took her eyes off the wall. "Foster." I spoke up. For a brief moment the negative emotions changed to hope before crashing back down again.

I resisted the urge to run out the door and moved closer, sitting on the bed - if you could even call it that - beside her, where her emotions were unbearable. "Foster, what did they do to you?" I asked with as much strength as I could muster.

She gave the most depressed laugh I'd ever heard,  "You know what happened. You've done this trick before. I'm not falling for it again."

" This isn't a trick! " Sophie rolled her eyes, "What are you even talking about?" It was pretty plain to see what they did by looking in the back corner of the room, but I wanted to ignore that.

Sophie shook her head, "It doesn't matter. I know they're gone. I know you're not real. So, quit the torment."

" Not- what?! Okay, that's it, Foster! " She looked at me and I saw the warmth that was once there had been drained, leaving only a shell of what had once been. My eyes went to the circulet around Sophie's head, and the keyhole in the middle, "Do you happen to have the key to the circulet?"

Sophie gave me a suspicious look before handing me the key. I pushed in into the headpiece and unlocked it before taking it off Sophie's head and throwing it to the ground, stepping on it for good measure. I could feel relief wash over Sophie and, as a result, wash over me as well. "There!" I exclaimed , "Now you can ask me questions and can read  my mind at any time. I'll prove that I'm the real Keefe Sencen! "

Sophie gave a small smile, "How did we meet?"

I put my hand on my chest in mock hurt, " Geeze, Foster! I said any question, and you had to start with that? That hurts! "

Sophie's smile grew a bit and she giggled, "It really is you!"

" I told you I was!"

Sophie's smile fell, "How... How long have I been here?"

" About three weeks. Sorry it took so long! "

Sophie didn't reply as she started counting the figures on the floor and in the pile in the corner. She also counted one on her lap, which I hadn't seen before, but, if I had to guess, it was probably Fitz or Dex, or maybe Amy.

"Seven days." She whispered. She looked up at me with tears in her eyes, "They lied, and as a result, I gave up after seven days. Only seven. " as her tears started to spill over, I wrapped her into a hug and let her cry on my shoulder.

"It's okay, Foster," I whispered, trying to send her as much calm as I could, "Honestly, if I were in your place, I would've probably given up sooner. Don't be so hard on yourself, okay?"

Sophie nodded and pulled away. Hope rekindled in her eyes as she gasped, "Wait, does that mean that everyone else it okay, too?"

I nodded , "Yeah! I came here with Biana, Leo, and Annabeth. Fitz and Dex are staying with Hazel and Leo to keep the Neverseen from getting inside their camp thing."

The happiness disappeared from Sophie's smile, "Wait, the Neverseen are trying to get into Camp Half Blood?! "

"No! Not yet! Annabeth just had a dream about that happening, so they're staying behind just in case. "

"What about everyone else?"

"Well we were the only ones who heard about the prophecy , so we tried to avoid telling anyone else. Which, I mean, does line up with the prophecy, so... "

"I guess," Sophie sighed, " I'm sorry this happened. It's not that I wanted to leave, it's just... "

"I know," I told her. Because I did. That's the exact way I felt when I had to leave my friends for the Neverseen. It was an awful feeling, but you eventually get back to normal. Usually. "Don't worry. We're going to get out of here and stop the Neverseen's plans! "

"But, Keefe, that's not our job!" Sophie had the most serious , confident look I'd seen her wear in a while.

"What do you mean, 'that's not our job '? Isn't that the whole reason Forkle... modified you? To stop the Neverseen? "

"That may have been his plan, but it's wouldn't work! Think about it! The Neverseen knew I existed before I knew I was an elf. They've always been prepared for me. You know who they aren't ready for? Annabeth! " Sophie looked at her hands, "I know it'd be going back on everything we did, but the prophecy says Annabeth will be the one to fight the Neverseen. I'm going against the monsters. Changes our strategy."

" Foster, I don't want you to get hurt! " I pleaded, even though I could feel she'd already made up her mind. She grabbed my hands and I could feel her care, determination, and overwhelming hope.

"Keefe. I'll be fine! If we make a plan, we can defeat the Neverseen and the monsters!"

" I thought we killed all the monsters already, " I heard Leo say from behind us. I turned to look at him and watched as Biana flew towards Sophie from behind him in a blur.

"Oh my gosh! Sophie!" She wrapped Sophie in a rib crushing hug , "We've been looking for you!!"

Sophie laughed, " Good to see you too! " She turned to look at Leo, "And you killed most of them. Some of them were still on Earth as you shut the Doors of Death and killed Gaea, so now they're stuck here until you kill them again."

" Well, where are they?" Leo asked, "If you need to kill them, we need to know where they are, right? "

Sophie stood, hiding whatever was in her lap from my view. She carried it over to the pile in the corner and set it down, using telekinesis to lift the other figures off the floor. Our of every on she moved over, I only recognized Sandor and Elwin, but, with every person she moved, I could feel more sorrow. I walked over to help lift the load off her shoulders, and soon they were all in a pile.

"Leo," she said, turing her back on the pile, "Please burn the pile. "

Leo didn't say anything, but he still lifted a hand and lit it, throwing the flames into the cloaks. Sophie didn't even pay attention, she just grabbed my hand and pulled me out the door. She paused just in front of it before taking a slow step out of the cell. The amount peace and relief that flew over both of us made me worried about what had happened if she tried to get out the first time.

As we walked down the hall, we found only one way out. Leo started walking down the hall until Sophie grabbed his wrist. "Wait," she said quietly, before dragging her hands down the wall.

I knew what she was doing. When we had first seen the passage shut behind us, Biana and I had realized the passages are only solid for demigods. They' re just illusions. In fact, the whole room where we found Sophie's necklace was one large illusion. Sophie was looking for the way out.

Biana and I started helping her, feeling the wall for space as Leo and Annabeth - probably, she was still invisible - stared at us. Suddenly, Sophie fell through the wall. She grinned and grabbed Leo's wrist again. "Come on. Let's get out of here."

I finally finished Chapter 27. I started writing it last night, but lots of it deleted before I could publish it, so I had to rewrite it. I'm gonna be doing something with my Youth Group tonight, so I won't be able to update more than once today. See ya, tomorrow!
