Chapter 22: Nightmares - Annabeth
A/n: So, I finally figured out how to hold words and use italics, but I'm not going to change anything in past chapters because that may get confusing , so, if you see italics, it's a dream or flashback. Once it goes back the normal writing, the dream/flashback is over.
PoV: Annabeth
I was outside. The more I looked around, the more unfamiliar it seemed. It was Camp Half Blood, but... not?
The first thing I noticed was that the barrier was gone. Usually I could see the shimmer of the Mist, but it has vanished. Thalia's pine tree was gone, too, and the golden fleece was nowhere to be seen. I hoped beyond hope that this was a dream from the past, when the barrier wasn't very strong.
The second thing I noticed was the quiet. As I looked around, I rarely could find anyone. When I walked into the Mess Hall, I felt my hopes shatter. Men in black cloaks sauntered down through lines of demigods, all sitting on the floor. Piper's mouth was tied to keep her from charmspeaking, and the others had strange devices to keep their demigods abilities from working.
The worst looking was Percy. While the others still looked strong and hopeful, he looked tired and empty. I knelt in front of him and put my hand on his shoulder, only for it to pass through him. That's when I noticed, I wasn't there. I wasn't in the room. And Percy looked so sad.
(No! That's not... How would that... what?!)
That's when the door slammed open. Percy's head jerked up and he grinned as another shrouded man walked in.
"Did you find them?" A woman asked the new arrival, who shook his head "no. "
Percy laughed, "Why are you still looking? You're never going to find them!"
The woman removed her hood to reveal blonde hair and icy eyes. If I didn't know she was evil, I would've guessed she was a celebrity. "Jackson," she said in a bitter sweet tone, " It may take time, but we'll find them eventually. You know Annabeth. She'll never stop until her friends are safe. "
"That may be true," Percy casually replied, " But, if she needs to, she'll hide and plan until the time is right. I trust her. "
"Oh, Percy!" I whispered, knowing that if I we actually there, I might have been crying.
The woman walked over and slapped Percy's cheek. "Your trust is misplaced. " she hissed.
"You know, I'm pretty sure someone's told me that before. Yet, here I am, alive."
" You won't be for long if you keep this up. " the woman turned to walk away.
"Hey, Gisela!" Percy called as she walked, " Annabeth is smarter than any of us here. Even if you do manage to catch her, she'll find a way to escape with all of us. Not to mention Nico and Leo will stop you before you can even get that far! "
Gisela sighed, "Jackson. Annabeth will come to find you as soon as she knows you're in danger. It's in her nature. And we'll be ready. We know how close they are to finding the Moonlark. And we know how much she can take before they all start to crumble. So don't tell me your girlfriend can rescue you all. We're always 3 steps ahead."
I watched Percy's sunken eyes fall into emptiness. " Oh, Percy! No! " I whispered again.
Suddenly, I was somewhere else. I definitely wasn't in New York anymore; the buildings had a totally different structure and layout. When I turned around, I found way looked like the entrance to a cave. Curious, I followed the path. It wasn't until I was a ways in that I looked back and noticed the entrance was gone.
As I walked, I suddenly came across 3 people. Two boys and a girl. I couldn't see their faces in the wonky lighting, but, judging by the flames dancing on the fingertips of one of them, I guessed it was Leo. And, while I couldn't pick up on most of what they were saying, I did hear the girl say the names Biana and Keefe to get their attention. That meant Biana was invisible and the other boy was Keefe.
(But who's the last one? Sophie? Hazel? No, Hazel was at the camp, and Sophie's missing. Which leaves... Me. That has to be me. But, if that's me, why can I see me? Or, what will happen to me? Ugh! Dreams are so confusing!
The scene around me changed again to that of a cell. The door was open, and inside was a thin, lost looking girl. Her blonde hair hung messily around her head, and her normally warm brown eyes looked tired and empty. Sophie looked as if she had no hope left. Scattered along the floor and in a dark pile in the corner were strangely solid cloaks. In her lap rested one of these firm... things, but before I could get a good look at it, I was back with Keefe, Biana, and Leo, but this time I couldn't see myself. All I felt was an indescribable sense of fear as a voice called out inaudible words that echoed around the room.
I jerked myself up, cold sweat dripping on my face and down my back. I quickly looked out a nearby window and sighed with relief when I saw Camp Half Blood still looked the same. Quietly, I changed into my Camp Half Blood t-shirt and shorts before walking outside.
The sun hadn't made it over the horizon by the time I sat down by Thalia's Pine. The dragon that guards the tree seemed to realize I wouldn't do anything crazy because it let me sit against it.
I didn't know why I was there, but I had to be with an old friend I couldn't hurt anymore. I don't know how long I was there for, but I had finished telling the tree about my dream by the time the sunrise was almost over. It was strange. I could've gone to Piper, or Hazel, or Percy, who'd gone into Tartarus with me, but instead, I went to Thalia.
I saw Percy approaching, and he opened his mouth to say something, but the dragon's growling cut him off. He paused, pointed at the dragon, then me, then back at the dragon before looking at me and mouthing, "how?" I smiled.
"It's okay, " I said calmly, "I'll leave so you don't have to worry about Percy."
Percy and I walked hand in hand up Half Blood Hill. "Nightmare? " Percy asked. I nodded, and he sighed, "Same." He gripped my shoulders and turned me to face him, a serious look on his face, "Annabeth, whatever happens, I won't let anyone or anything hurt you."
I smiled, " Percy, you don't have to worry! I won't get hurt! "
He wrapped me into a hug, "Just, don't do anything stupid, okay?"
I laughed, " That's your job, Seaweed Brain! " But I hugged him back anyway.
Not ending on a cliffhanger for the first time! I'm not really good at writing fluff, so I want your opinions on it. Maybe I'll write more fluff in the future, it's fun! Almost as fun as hurting my characters! (Yeah, I know something's wrong with me) This was a pretty fun chapter, but I want to keep posting, so I'll either see you later today, or tomorrow, if I'm busy. See ya!
