PoV: Annabeth
"Chill, Fitz!!" I heard Keefe yell, "We don't know if she did anything!"
" She was the last person to have a casual talk with Sophie! She has to be part of it! "
"You're wrong!" Percy exclaimed , preparing to uncap Riptide.
"No!" I yelled, silencing everyone, "I have a feeling that I am part of it! But, let me inform you that our last talk was anything but casual."
Fitz's grip on my arms loosened slightly as I continued, "Sophie and I have been working on a project together, but not for school. Lately, we've been hanging out to discuss this," I held up the scroll with the prophecy on it. I always made sure it was on me so no one could sneak a look at it, and now I was glad for my worry. When I held up the scroll, Fitz and Grady just stared at me confused, Percy and Hazel looked at me in astonishment, and Keefe's breath caught in his throat.
"I'm assuming you know what this is?" I asked, looking at Keefe who simply nodded.
" Wait, " Percy interrupted, "Why does he know, but not us?"
" Better question, " Fitz added, "What even is that?" He turned his gaze to Keefe , "And why did Sophie tell you and no one else?"
" I'm gonna answer Jackson's question first. That good with you, Fitzy? " Keefe asked.
"No!" Fitz replied.
" So, Jackson, " Keefe started, totally ignoring a now even more angry Fitz, "Sophie probably wouldn't have told me, but I was there when she received it. That a good enough explanation for you?" When Percy nodded, he turned to face Fitz, "As for your amazing contribution to the conversation, Fitzy, that thing Annabeth's holding is very bad. The best description Sophie allowed me to say was a 'prediction of the future.' She's didn't tell anyone else because she was worried about getting everyone else involved."
There was a strange silence as Fitz slowly moved away from me and towards Keefe. "And you just happened to be there when Sophie got that letter?"
" Um, yeah. Sophie was... " he trailed off and glanced at Hazel and Percy, who were too busy seeing if I was okay to notice. "She was teaching me a different language. Because she told me she would. Because I won a bet."
" Sophie doesn't take bets, " Grady mumbled.
I stood up, "Well, she did with me," I casually pulled some of my hair behind my ear but paused for a second over my temple. Fitz seemed to understand because I soon heard his crisp voice in my head.
*So, Sophie told you I'm a telepath?*
#Yeah. And I recommend using your telepathy skills to go into Keefe's mind and get the real story. He's not sharing everything because Percy and Hazel are here.#
Fitz looked at Keefe again, "What bet did you guys make that made Sophie take bets?" He asked.
" I didn't force her to bet! I just made a bet with Ro once, and she joined in because she thought the answer was obvious. When she won, she realized how fun bets were!"
"This is why I tried to keep Sophie away from you, Keefe." I heard Grady mumble.
" Why don't you like Keefe? " I asked Grady, trying to draw attention away from Fitz and Keefe, who were clearly communicating telepathically at the moment.
"He's just a bad influence!" Grady exclaimed quietly, it whether he was acting or he actually hated Keefe, I couldn't tell, "He ran away from home, betrayed his friends on many occasions, and a lot more! I don't want him around my daughter!"
" Well, Grady! " Keefe exclaimed, signalling they were done talking, "I love the way you think of me! All those things you think I did but I didn't? Wonderful!"
Grady grumbled something about 'Lodestar' before backing away from me. Keefe came forward to talk to us,
"So, we're all looking for Sophie, right?" Keefe asked, " Well, maybe we should go looked for her. You know, split up into smaller groups and search different places."
As soon as he said "split", I froze. The line in the prophecy played in my head, and I got the feeling that Fitz had heard it, but didn't understand.
"Um, Wise Girl?" Percy asked, , waving a hand in front of my face, "You good?"
I quickly shook my head to get rid of the fog in front of my eyes before replying, " Yeah, I'm fine. Splitting is a good idea, Keefe. Though, maybe we should talk about this later? It's getting kind of late. " Fitz, Hazel, and Percy nodded, "Okay, so... There's a park near here. Meet there after school tomorrow?"
"Okay. We'll meet you there. We're gonna stay behind and keep searching for clues." Keefe said with a wave.
It was kind of strange to leave the elves behind, but still, we turned and left. As we walked, I heard Fitz in my head again.
*So, what does "Split to fight for what is true" have to do with Sophie?*
#Um... I don't know if I'm allowed to answer that.#
*Well, you obviously know something.*
#I have a hunch. Why?#
*Well, Keefe told me that Sophie came to him on Friday asking who would be the most likely to stay behind on a mission.*
#WHAT?#
*I'm assuming your reaction means you didn't know that? *
#No! I expected her to go to someone else!#
*Who would this "someone else " be?*
#Some figure of authority! Alden, Forkle, someone like that! Not Keefe!#
*What's wrong with Keefe?* I didn't know it was possible to hear a person smirking.
#You guys aren't supposed to get involved unless absolutely necessary!#
*Involved in what?! Be more clear, Annabeth!*
#I can't! I'm not supposed to tell you if you aren't directly involved!#
*Ugh! Stop being so difficult!* From down the hall, I heard something glass break. Percy and Hazel also turned to look, proving it wasn't my imagination.
"What was that?" Hazel asked .
"Probably just someone knocking something over on accident," I fibbed , "Though they better clean it up well so they don't get in trouble tomorrow! " Percy laughed and we kept walking.
*You could hear that? * Fitz asked.
#Yep!# I laughed in my mind. Fitz was quiet for a while before he talked again.
*How am I not directly involved in this?*
#Because you weren't given a scroll. It's as simple as that!#
*So, only you and Sophie are part of this?*
#Not exactly... at this point you'll probably force yourself to get involved.#
*What do you think I'm trying to do? I just want to save Sophie!*
#Why? So you'll get back together and you're reputation won't be destroyed? Yeah, Sophie told me all about your relationship.#
Fitz hesitated, *Tomorrow, when we meet each other at the park, will it just be you?*
#Probably not. Percy won't let me go out on my own, and since Hazel was here today, she'll probably come tomorrow. I also wouldn't be surprised if Leo found a way to sneak in.#
*Fine. Biana will also sneak in, more then likely. Are you okay with Dex coming too?*
#He's the technopath, right? I'm fine with that.#
*Okay. He's Sophie's cousin, so I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to get involved.*
#Okay.#
I continued walking in silence until we walked out the door. In the corner of my eye, I saw a dark figure. I pulled Percy and Hazel back behind the section of the wall that came out, with myself closest to the corner. I looked out for a second to see he was shrouded in a dark cloak.
"What was that-" Percy started.
"Sh!!!" I put a finger to go lips, quieting him.
#FITZ!!#
*Annabeth! Are you okay?*
#There's a man outside the school in a dark cloak.#
*Is there an eye on the sleeve?* Fitz sounded panicked.
I looked out again and, sure enough, there a was a white eye on the sleeve. #Yeah! He's just walking around with a black thing in his hands.#
*An obscurer.* Fitz mentally groaned, *Listen! You need to go!*
#What about you?#
*The others already know! We're gonna leap. Just get away as fast as possible!*
#Talk at school?#
*Deal. Be careful!*
#You too.#
I looked over at Hazel and Percy, who were looking at me nervously.
"Annabeth, are you okay?" Percy asked gently.
" Yeah. "
"What were you doing? "
"I'll explain later. Right now, we have to run."
" Why? " Hazel asked.
"I'll explain that later too. Now quit the questions and go!"
Without another word, I took off, with Percy and Hazel at my heels.
"Where are we going?" Percy asked.
"Where do you think? We're going to camp!"
It seemed like hours before we reached camp. As we ran though the barrier, I looked back to see the cloaked figure closing in on us.
"Barrier, " I mumbled, "I prevent any elves besides Sophie Foster from entering or leaving Camp Half Blood." I knew it was a stretch , but I had to try.
Suddenly , the man stopped walking. He looked around before turing and going back the way he came. When he was gone, I sighed with relief and turned around, only to see Hazel and Percy staring at me.
I sighed, "Guess I have a lot of explaining to do."
yea ! Chapter 18! this book is actually going by faster than I expected! Once again, I'm open to theories and suggestions, and I will be seeing you later!
