Chapter 8- Who Are They?

(~Your POV~)

My legs feel weak. My eyes never leave him. "P-Papyrus." I choke on air. "You.. know who I am?" His orange pupils scan me up and down. I fall onto my knees, cold tears falling down my face. My magic disappears as well as my strength. I can't breathe.

'No.. It can't be him. I'm hallucinating. NO nO NO!'

"This is a-all some s-sick joke." I say faintly. Even if it's a trick in my head, it's surely a harsh one. I haven't seen Papyrus in over ten years. I watched him leave this world. Not only that, I scattered his dust at his funeral. I was convinced that I'd never see him again in this life. Now, here he is, alive.

His voice takes a serious turn. His cautious eyes glare down at me. "Human... Who are you?" He demands. I can't answer him. How do I freaking answer him?! It's all too much.

'I can't-'

My breathing speeds up and yet I can't find air. I can't stop. I can't breathe. My body trembles violently as I start to hyperventilate. My hands claw into the snow path and my head hangs low. I get tunnel vision. My soul is completely overwhelmed. It's too much to bear.

'It's not real! He'S GOnE, Y/N!'

The edges of my vision begin to blur as my body loses oxygen. It hurts. Everything hurts.

(~Honey's POV~)

I stay where I stand. At first, I have to fight something in my soul for wanting to be beside her. The human has gone into a panic-induced meltdown. This is the first time an adult human has fallen into the underground, and yet she somehow knows my name?

'The king didn't tell her anything, did he?'

I flinch when I hear the screams of children, "MAMA!!!!!"

'Heck, there's more of them?!'

I turn around as two boys run past me. My soul skips a beat on account of seeing two skeletons, not humans. They likely sensed their mother's soul in distress. That or they heard her scream earlier,

'If that's even their mother. How is it even possible? Sans and I are the last ones...'

At least, that's what I thought. "GET AWAY FROM HER!" One of the children yells at me, his eye sockets sparked with high amounts of orange magic. The second child is more attentive to the human, hugging her head into his chest and speaking urgently to her. This one appears to have her soul trait, his eyes a dull shade of (s/c). Both of them look at me in fear. I'm still trying to wrap my skull around this.

'The human knows who I am. She's not the kid. She has two monster kids with her that claim she is their mother.'

The first child with orange eyes yells again, trying to intimidate me, "WHAT DID YOU DO TO HER, YoU... You.." The second begins speaking, "R-Roman, i-i-is that...?" I start to get a little freaked out.

'Why is everyone looking at me like I'm some museum exhibit gone wrong?'

"The human and I were just having a friendly chat, that's all." I state. I was so focused on the kids, I forgot about the human's current condition. She suddenly slumps forward, losing consciousness and falling into the snow. Both boys scream in terror.

'Geez-'

I rush forward, getting on a knee beside her. Dangerous or not, she's not okay. I check her stats.

'Her HP is okay. It's not declining. Her soul is struggling to beat. Likely from shock or stress?'

It's the only explanation I can come up with for now. This whole occurrence is starting to hurt my skull. I look to the children, asking, "This is your mother?" Both of them nod.

'...'

Things just got even weirder. How is that even possible? All of the monsters are locked down here and yet these two exist? Monster children belonging to a human. Even in other resets, there was never any signs of a monster living on the surface previous to us.

'Focus, Papyrus. Answers later.'

I decide to focus on the task at hand. Both children are shivering from both fear and the cold.

'They can't stay out here.'

I do my best to carefully pick up the human without hurting her. "Look- I don't know what's brought you here but.. Your mother appears to be in some form of shock and I can't leave you three out here alone." The boy with orange eyes seems to be the only one brave enough to speak to me. "We came.. to find you.."

(~Time Skip~)

I put the human in my bed and close the door.

'This is all I can do for now. If things get worse, I may have to bring her to Undyne.'

The two boys wait for me on the couch, staring down every move I make with wide eyes. It's very difficult not to notice them.

'Well, if I can't get answers from the human, I can get them from the kids.'

I quickly make my way down the stairs. "Look- My bro won't be back from training for another couple hours. You can stay here. Still, ya need to tell me who you kids are and where you came from."

'I need to figure out what kinda timeline this is supposed to be.'

The boy with orange eyes speaks for them, "My name is Roman. My b-brother is Serif." I take a moment to observe them. They look almost identical if not for their eyes. Also, it appears that Serif is a little different. His bones are a shade paler as are his eyes.

'Is something interfering with his magic?'

I approach the couch and bend down so I can speak eye level with them. "It's nice to meet you both. Now, can you tell me where you two came from?" These are kids I'm speaking to and they seem to be stressed out. I have to choose my tone and words carefully.

Serif and Roman look to each other uncomfortably before both glance to me. "Mom says we can't know that until we're older." Roman explains. My face heats up instantly. I hurriedly slap a hand over my face to hide my quite obvious blush. Laughter escapes me for the first time today. Heck, why is this so awkwardly hilarious?

'Kids...'

Holding down my embarrassment, I try rephrasing the question, "She's right, but that's not what I meant. I mean, where do you and your mother live? Do you know?" Serif points to the ceiling, "U-Up there."

'So they fell from the surface. Okay, that's step one.'

"And your father?" I ask. Again, both Roman and Serif go quiet. They took a moment before Roman answers me, "He died before we were born." I take a deep breath. I feel my soul aching for the both of them. I can only imagine how hard it's been for their mother. She's had to raise two monster children on the surface all by herself. Likely, they've had a harsh life.

'Did they come here for shelter?'

"I see. So, you didn't know him much, huh?" I mumble without thinking. Soon after my comment Serif looks like he's about to cry. I'm instantly filled with regret. "Aw, bud. I'm sorry." I gently pat him on the head. Roman hugs onto his brother. Serif quickly hides his face from me in Roman's shoulder. Roman look down at the ground, muttering, "As for your question, I guess you could say that..."

There's still one thing lingering on my mind. The human seemed to have known me. Roman mentioned that they came here to find me specifically. Yet, I have no clue as to who they are. I sigh, staring at the kids.

'I suppose it's a question I can ask their mother. These boys have been through enough.'
