Chapter 28- We're Moving
(~Your POV + Time Skip A Few Months~)
It's definitely been a process. Chara, acting as ambassador, had to start from scratch to gain mankind's trust concerning monsters. Honey and Undyne teamed up the day that the barrier was broken. They were able to warn Queen Toriel about soul deficiencies. Thankfully, the Queen was kind and quick to listen. You could tell by the events that followed that she truly cares for the lives of her kingdom. A decree was soon made that monsters would have to be medically cleared before being allowed to leave the Underground. The Queen herself even vowed to stay behind until each and every monster was eventually relocated. She didn't have to. Still, she's kept her promise and is still living in New Home to this day.
Undyne and Honey put their smart minds together to develop a machine that has helped to identify hundreds with soul deficiencies. If a monster has no soul deficiency detected, they are given a pass to move to the surface when they wish to. If a monster with a deficiency is identified, they are designated to a group. Once it's their group's turn to leave the underground, they are brought to the surface and started on Undyne's injections. Each monster's health is then monitored daily by Undyne and a group of volunteering doctors. Even some of the human doctors on the surface have chosen to join their cause. Each monster's dosage is then adjusted until they can be medically cleared as stable enough to live without everyday monitoring. It usually takes up to a few weeks to complete one group. As one group is cleared, another gets the chance to move to the surface and start their process. This has been the way it's happened for a few months now. With the Queen's help and guidance, everyone in the Underground has been so patient.
Unfortunately, this illness still cannot be fully cured. On the other hand, we helped prevent the painful deaths of so many monsters that didn't have a chance in the last timeline.
'Today is the day.'
I take a deep breath. Next, I fold the last of Serif and Roman's clothes before neatly placing them into a cardboard box. "Honey, r-remember that you have to p-pick up your sock." I remind him. My bonehead for a husband packed up half of one box for the day before sprawling out across his bed.
'I suppose that is something.'
His eyes are closed for relaxation but he's not asleep. "I'll get to it at some point, Beautiful." He reassures me. "While y-you're at it, y-you m-may want to look for the matching one. I did the l-laundry but I can't find it a-anywhere." As I'm packing, I notice him staring at me briefly every now and then. Blue and I have tackled most of the packing throughout the last few days. The house looks a lot more empty now.
'It's going to be a long process bringing all of our stuff to the surface.'
From Honey's open door, I hear the echo of a small knock downstairs. "Blue, he's here!" I yell. Blue is packing the last of his things in his bedroom so he should have heard me. Papyrus opens his eyes again, mumbling, "A visitor?" "Mhm. T-They've mostly been t-talking through text lately b-b-but Blue's been waiting for the perfect time to invite him over. We've all b-been s-so busy."
'Also, Blue wasn't sure if Honey would be ready to meet his brother-in-law.'
I lean through the doorway as Sans comes running out of his room. His eyes are completely focused on the door. Both twins rush out of the room and after him. They giggle and squeal excitedly. Sans rushes down the stairs and swings the front door open. Their eyes locked on each other instantly. Dream soon throws himself into Sans' arms. Blue laughs joyfully and hugs him tightly. I see Blue hold his lover's waist and then spin him around from excitement. Serif and Roman show the same rejoicing spirit by squealing and circling the two. It's the cutest thing. I didn't even notice until now that Pap got out of bed. He is standing beside me in seconds.
Dream suddenly tears up. Blue is quick to respond. Sans cups both of his hands around Dream's face and uses his thumbs to trace the tears away. "When you didn't text me.. I-I thought.. I thought I'd lost you.." "I missed you too, Dream." Blue presses his forehead onto Dream's in a gentle and loving gesture. "DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!" Serif and Roman chant together. Sans' face turns completely blue and he attempts to playfully shoo the kids away. Dream laughs, taking the bait immediately by leaning closer and kissing him. Blue's eyes widened as the poor thing got startled. The twins, being the absolute fanboys that Undyne taught them to be, go absolutely nuts.
Papyrus whispers to me, "How long have they been together?" I'm surprised by his calm and almost careless tone. "F-Four years." I answer. He asks another brief question, "Married?" I smirk, "Ring's under Blue's g-glove." I quietly close the bedroom door. Honey is quiet. I can assume he's trying to process everything. I let him take his time.
'Everything has changed so much from what he last remembers. There's the ten year gap of everything he missed.'
"They look happy." He speaks like he's talking more to himself than to me. I rub my hand up and down his arm while confirming, "They are."
There was another period of silence. Then, his body begins to tremble. "You could've moved on with someone else. You could've been happy again. My bro found someone to care for him, but where was I when you needed me the most?" It's easy to notice Pap guilt tripping himself. I understand the feeling. I did it too for so long. Papyrus waited for me to wake up from my coma even though he had every right to leave. We never would've gotten married or had the twins if he had chose to move on. Still, he stayed.
'I always knew Honey was the one for me. I didn't desire to find another mate. We were okay.'
I shift myself directly in front of him and hold his hands. "Pap, l-look at m-me." Despite my request, Papyrus still keeps his stare locked towards the floor. I take a quick breath and continue, "A lot c-c-changed when y-you were g-gone. Especially with this r-reset, a lot is d-different from w-what m-me and the boys were used to. Our lives a-are starting over.. But there is o-one thing remaining t-that hasn't and will n-never change."
Papyrus' orange eyes meet with my gaze. I give him a smile and firm answer, "We w-want you in it, Papyrus. You've missed m-moments but now it's t-time to make n-new ones. The twins love you a-a-and so do I. That's what matters most n-now, isn't it?" Tears form in Papyrus' eyes quickly. He takes one of my hands, which is still intertwined with his, and presses a lingering kiss to it. "Of course, Beautiful. You're always right." He says softly through the tears.
(~Time Skip~)
'When will the walking end?'
We finished yet another day full of bringing boxes to the new house. Thankfully, Dream decided to help us out today. He's been visiting a lot more now that things have settled in the timeline. Papyrus is walking beside his younger brother, also having a sleeping Serif hugged onto his back. I walk a step or two behind them. Roman has a tight hold on my hand as he walks beside me.
"Mama, why do we always have to walk so far? I'm tired." He whines. We're making our way back to Snowdin for the night. We're currently reaching the border between Hotland and Waterfall. I don't blame Roman for being tired. To be walking to and from the Underground multiple times a day is exhausting.
'My arms and legs are killing me too.'
"The o-only m-members in this family that can teleport are you a-and Dad. If w-we to ask you or him to repeatedly t-teleport an entire g-group w-with boxes to carry, it w-would be v-very hard and t-tiring for the both of you. I-I know walking i-is tough, b-but it'll all be worth it in the end." I tell him. "Why couldn't you turn into the big fire bird and fly us there?" I let out a sigh mixed with laughter. Of course it would be Roman to ask something like that. "I think t-that w-was a one-time thing, Pumpkin." I admit to him.
Roman looks to the surrounding flowers and rivers of Waterfall. He goes quiet and inches close to my side. Being his mother, I can sense his soul grow with fear.
(~Honey's POV~)
"So you became part of a group that protects the different AUs?" I ask my brother. He smiles and rubs the back of his skull nervously, "Yes, I have! It was Classic (Undertale Sans) that introduced me to Dream, and Dream invited me to join." I used to visit my friends in other universes back then. Sans never really came with me due to always worrying and working all the time. The visits became scarce after I got sicker.
'I wonder how the guys have been while I was gone.'
Classic might remember me through resets but Edge (Underfell Papyrus) doesn't remember resets like Fell (Underfell Sans) does. If his world has reset, I'll likely have to start our friendship all over again.
'That's alright. It wouldn't be the first time anyway.'
Sans becomes excited, finishing with a motivated and confident speech, "It has its stress and responsibilities but it's so fulfilling! It's like being a Royal guard of the multiverse. Doesn't that make me sound cool?!" Dream laughs and links arms with him, "You do so well at it. Ink and I are glad to have you working alongside us."
'I'm assuming how it went is that these two figured out they wanted more at some point of working together.'
"Papyrus..!" Y/N speaks up from behind us. "Yes, Beautiful?" I pause and turn my head. She tilts her head down, silently gesturing to our child by her side. Roman is shivering. I got so distracted with talking that I forgot that he gets this way in Waterfall. "Maybe w-we should f-find another way to get h-home." Y/N offers. "Well, there is that one route we can let them take." Blue says slowly. I already know what he's talking about.
'I guess it'll work.'
(~Your POV~)
Sans leads us to a large river. Sitting still in the water is a wooden boat. In the boat is a completely cloaked figure. I'm not able to see the monster underneath at all. Blue gives me a small smile, "There's enough room for you and Roman to ride. The Riverperson has been helping others travel between the Underground for years. The rest of us will meet you in Snowdin."
Sans explains that him and Papyrus don't take the boat to travel like most monsters will. I know why. It's because their bodies are dense. Skeletons can't swim because they will only sink. On that account, they don't really like being put in a small boat surrounded by water. I am listening to Sans but my mind is trapped within itself. I hesitate and stare at the figure for a long time. My soul and mind are stirring. Pap was the one to notice my overthinking. "Do you not like boat rides, Beautiful?"
I walk to the edge where the land meets the river. I offer my hand to the Riverperson. Maybe I'm throwing all my clues into the wrong answer but I'm willing to at least try. "Well? H-Have y-you decided to come home yet?" I ask them. Honey tilts his head, "Y/NNNN..?" Papyrus' tone is equal to him uncomfortably asking me 'What are you doingggg..?' I ignore him and continue to stare into the darkness underneath this monster's hood.
A familiar chuckle comes from the darkness of the cloak, "You are the one that kept me waiting, my dear. I was under the impression that you had forgotten me." The cloak parts down the middle and a skeletal hand missing its palm reaches out from the darkness to take mine. I smile wider as I pull him onto land. I playfully sass him, "Whatever, a-are you coming t-to dinner or not? The whole family's here and n-neither of our m-marriages have your blessing. T-The least you can d-do is spend a m-m-meal with us." A short sigh comes from him. Finally, Gaster pulls the hood down from his skull and reveals his face. "I'd love to. That is, if my sons would allow you to host me in their home." He explains. I turn towards the group.
Everyone except the kids are stunned completely. "Honey, I think someone broke your record of how long it takes to come back from the dead." Dream mumbles while staring at Gaster still. Neither brothers comment on Dream's statement. Their only focus is their long lost father right in front of them.
Blue has both of his hands clasped over his mouth. Blue tears spill out of his dark eye sockets. "Aww, Blue-" Before I could even say another word, Sans runs forward. He hugs firmly onto his dad. Sans slammed into him with so much force that I had to help stop Gaster from falling backwards into the river. Gaster hugs Sans tightly in return.
"Y/N, h-how did you.." Pap stares at me with white dots for pupils. He's so shocked that he doesn't have the thought process to finish his question. "Your dad likes to torment the souls of the dead." I state bluntly. I receive a slap of embarrassment to the shoulder from Gaster. "That is NoT what happened!!!" He tries to defend himself and I only laugh at his blush-covered face.
"Dad, who is that?" Roman asks in a whisper to Papyrus. I look to Papyrus as he answers him, "That's my dad, kiddo." "We haVe A GRANDPARENT!!?" Serif shrieks suddenly, making Honey's soul nearly leave his body. "When did you wake up?!" I wheeze.
