Chapter 23- Lost Souls Part 1
(~Your POV~)
I watch the children from my seat on the staircase. They both giggle as they crowd around the couch. Serif made a bowl of whipped cream this morning just for childish pleasure. For the longest time his brother was licking off the whisk Serif used to make it. Honey is sleeping on the couch, completely unaware of what goofiness is going on beside him. Serif takes another spoonful of whipped cream for himself and hums cheerfully once contented with the bite. "So? Are we going to do it or are you just going to eat it all?" Roman teases. Roman has a container of cinnamon in his arms, which he's been eating with a spoon since he ran out of whipped cream. I arch an eyebrow.
'What are you two doing?'
I'm tempted by my own curiosity. So, I choose not to interrupt or do anything that would let them know that I'm watching them. In fact, I pull out my phone and start recording. Serif gives his brother a nod before stuffing another spoonful of the sweet treat into his mouth. Roman does the same with the cinnamon. Roman then slips in front of his brother, carefully grabbing a hold of Papyrus' arm. Honey has one arm hooked under his arm for support and the other hooked over his stomach. Roman grabs the one on his stomach and readjusts the arm to Pap's side instead. I'm not in the slightest surprised that Honey hasn't waken up at this point.
Once Roman had Honey's arm in position, he makes sure that Honey's palm is facing up. Serif takes several large spoonfuls of the whipped cream. He proceeds to layer it into Honey's hand. I fight back the urge to laugh, my cheeks hurting from the way I'm smiling.
'So that's what you're doing? Pff- Nice job, kids.'
"Alright, you do it." Roman commands. Serif is immediately unsure. Sweat forms on his skull as he looks to his dad and then his younger brother. "Are you sure? You're braver-" "You were born first~" Roman makes a slick come back. Serif lets out a growl mixed with a groan. He's ultimately defeated. Serif crawls onto the side arm of the couch slowly. I find myself inching to the edge of the step with anticipation. I double check that the camera is in focus.
'This is going to be good.'
Serif shakily sits on the sofa arm, being mere inches above Pap's skull. He winces softly, "Sorry, Dad-" Next, a loud sharp thunk can be heard as Serif slaps Papyrus' hollow skull. I nearly lost my composure at the sound itself. Honey's entire body jolts as he wakes up. "OW-" His reflexive but completely unaware state of mind causes him to slap his whip creamed hand over his head. It goes all over his face and I let out a hard wheeze. Roman was also taken off guard mid swallow on his cinnamon. Dark red puffs of cinnamon escape him as he chokes on it through his hysterical laughter. Serif is completely occupied on his brother, shouting through the laughter, "YOU FAILED THE CINNAMON CHALLENGE! HA-" Honey suddenly reaches up and gives Serif a playful slap to the cheek, giving him the same whipped cream fate. Serif shrieks and falls off the side of the couch.
'Oh mY FreAkiNg GoD-'
I finally give in to my laughter. I laugh so much that my heart hurts. Tears form in my eyes as I fold over myself. "You put them up to this, Beautiful?" Honey asks. I can even hear the laughter he's trying to hold back. I take deep breaths and look up. Roman has recovered, but his clothes are covered in cinnamon. Serif is hiding behind the side of the couch while wiping the foam from his face. "RUN KIDS RUN!!!" I squeal. The three downstairs immediately catch onto the game. Both kids back up towards the kitchen while Honey stands up. "I think I'm going to enjoy this." Papyrus chuckles. I rush downstairs and continue recording on my phone.
'If only Blue weren't on patrol. He should've been here to see this.'
"It's okay, Brother! As long as we stay together-" Serif looks to his side to see Roman teleport away. His eyes go dark as he mutters, "Well shoot."
Honey lunges towards him and Serif screams at the top of his lungs before darting into the kitchen. I feel so bad for the child not inheriting teleportation like his brother but I can't stop laughing. I follow and stop in the kitchen doorway. I arrived just in time too. Anyone would think that Serif would be cornered immediately. I literally watch as he uses momentum to run up the wall of the unusually tall sink. Once he achieves enough height, he pushes in a leap off the sink and completely over Pap's head. "WHAT THE WORLD?!" Honey whips himself around with wide eyes. Serif's quick to stick the landing. The only thing in his way is me now. Or so I thought. Serif drops to the ground and slides in between my legs. As he does so, he gives me a quick wink and peace signs (Writer~San: Serif no joke be like- ✨(>wO)✌🏻✌🏻 "Cya later losers~") with his hands. I turn around as he rushes to get up in the living room and runs out of the front door.
I put my phone away and giggle hysterically. I got that filmed and that video is now the highlight of my life. Honey's arms wrap around me from behind as he fusses, "That kid is a track star and it's all your fault." "Hey, y-y-you're the o-o-one t-that trapped y-your kids in the house f-f-for a week. No w-wonder t-they got bored." I say before getting caught in another fit of giggles, "That... T-That was pure comedy."
I turn myself around to face Pap. I arch an eyebrow after giving a quick kiss to his cheek. "W-Well, Pap? Ya g-going t-to go find them?" "Me? Alone? Oh you're coming with me, Beautiful~"
'Wait what? I thought I'm not supposed to leave-'
Seems that I don't have a choice anymore. Honey pulls me along and out the door.
(~Blue's POV~)
I continue to navigate myself through Waterfall. It's been quiet besides the occasional voice from an echo flower. No one has dared to come out with the murderer still on the loose. I sigh and continue walking.
'There has to be a clue somewhere.'
"h e L p.." A flower whimpers as I pass it. My eyes immediately lock onto it. I stop in my tracks and instead approach the flower. Once I bend down, I stroke its soft petals. It speaks once again, the voice of a child, "h e L p.."
'Is that?'
I shake the feeling away. The voice could've been distorted somehow. There's no telling if it was the voice I heard. There's a flower behind it. I take two steps forward, letting it brush against my leg. "I dOn't wAnT to Do ThIs AnYmOre." It cries. My body stiffens at hearing the same voice, Roman's.
'There's no way he's out here again. He can't be.'
There's another flower down the overgrown path. I rush towards it and summon a bone staff in my hands. If Roman's out here with someone dangerous, I can't take any risks. As I rush forward, the next flower speaks, "PlEasE LeAvE!" And another screams, "GET OUT!!! LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!" My soul is pounding in my chest. The farther I go, the more it feels like an eternity. For all I know, my speed can be the determining factor whether Roman lives or dies. Flames of blue magic flow from my eye sockets as my soul becomes restless.
'I will not let another family member die!!!'
I turn a corner and find Roman's curled body in the dark. His back is facing me and his entire body is shaking. Sobs escape him as he sits there, alone. I look around and sense no one else. Still, this gives me an awful feeling. I let my staff disappear as I step closer. "Roman, what are you doing here? It's going to be okay.
Take my hand." I offer my hand to him. He whines loudly, sounding almost as if he's in pain. I summon his soul for me to check his stats. Red determination is slowly taking over his once orange soul. With it, black cracks are slowly etching into it. I gasp and step back.
'Hatred.'
"UnCLe SanS.." Roman whimpers. He turns around and lets me see his face. His pupils are flickering between orange and red. Between bravery and determination, both traits are fighting for control. More tears fall down his face as blasters summon to his side. His blasters are displaying very unusual behavior, their jaws open while they creak and shake. Their pupils are also switching between red and orange. Magic forms in their mouths. I look to my nephew in extreme concern. Roman whimpers to me almost so softly that I didn't hear him...
"R U N."
(~Honey's POV~)
Y/N and I are silently walking through the forests of Snowdin. It's been around thirty minutes and we haven't found either of the twins. It's enough to get us worrying. "Maybe we should check the house again?" I offer. Y/N says nothing and grabs at her arms, both are trembling. "... You cold?" I ask her. She shakes her head. I worry more about her lack of words. "Another seizure coming on?" "It's only a m-matter of time b-before it f-flares u-up again. Without my m-m-medication, they won't stop. Instead, t-t-they'll g-gradually get worse. I d-d-don't know how m-much time I h-have-" I interrupt her abruptly, "Don't say stuff like that. We're going to pull through this. We always do." Beautiful gives me a long glance before staring down at the snow. "Yeah.. Y-You're right.."
A low growl suddenly catches my attention. I look up to the trees. A blaster stares down at us, camouflaged pretty well with all the white surroundings. It's not one of mine or my bro's. One of its eyes is a (s/c) ring and the other is a dark blue.
'Integrity?'
A trait that, if mastered correctly, allows you to force your version of integrity/morals onto others. For example, Error Sans will use strings of integrity to ensnare and control other souls. His morals are nothing but dark so he uses the power for no good.
'Who has control of this blaster?'
Y/N looks up and sees it as well. She sighs a breath of relief, "Serif! B-Babybones, the game is o-o-over. Please c-come here." I look at Y/N and then back at the blaster, "What?" Soon, a small skeletal hand reaches from hiding behind the tree's trunk. Serif carefully steps onto the same branch the blaster is hovering over. The blaster's eyes shift to a normal (s/c) as it shakes itself like a wet dog would. "Is he gone?" Serif asks.
'His eyes, hiS FreAkIng-'
One is a (s/c) ring while the other is multicolored. He has a chromas soul just like Dad did. He has more than one freaking soul trait meaning he can use several forms of magic. "Is who gone? It's j-just us, Sweetheart! P-Please c-come d-down from there!" Y/N calls to him. "Okay..." Serif climbs onto his blaster and it slowly levitates to the ground. Once he plants his feet into the snow, he flinches and grabs at his head. I rush forward to assist him, bending down and holding his shoulders. "Are you okay, Serif?" I ask quickly. His breathing is shaken up as he closes his eye sockets, "Y-Yeah.. It's just a kickback from using my magic. It's okay." He opens his eyes again. Both pupils have shifted to dull (s/c) as usual. I decide it would be best to address the magic stuff later.
"Why were you hiding? What happened?" Serif hugs his arms around himself and mumbles in a terrorized voice, "It's Roman. I found him e-earlier but..." He trails off. My grip only tightens. "Serif, you need to tell me what happened to your brother." Serif looks back to me, his body trembling as he speaks up, "Dad, there's something I have to tell you."
I instantly have a bad feeling. I turn to Y/N. Except, there was no Y/N.
(~Blue's POV~)
I lay on the ground, my breathing heavy. Everything hurts. Cracks and fractures cover my body. My blood stains the black grass below me. Bones are scattered across the land around me. Fire is spreading through the grass quickly, either started by blasters or Roman's magic. A loud scream echos through the air as another blaster charges up.
'You have to get up. Get up, Sans! Get up!!!'
I roll myself out of the way, just barely dodging the beam of magic. It took everything out of me. The pain only increases as I lay here. "Hopeless. I thought you'd give me more of a fight, Sans." Roman says with red eyes and a wide smile. Though, I know it's not him. Whatever is inside him, inside his soul, that is the entity who I'm speaking to. I sit myself up with my arms laying limply at my side. It must the same person that I faced during our battle.
'I sensed the change in his tactics and behavior, but why didn't I question it? Did Papyrus see it too? That's why he attacked Roman, isn't it?'
Roman's wings stretch out behind him and he lifts his hands, "Oh well~ I've quite enjoyed this but every game must come to an end, don't you think?" Orange bones sprout out from under me. Being motionless, my soul gets the shock of a lifetime. I scream out in pain as my ribs are snapped with new fractures.
'How long have we been fighting? Why can't I get away? Why can't I beat them? Why am I not strong enough? Why? WHy? WhY?! WHY?!!!'
The orange bones dissolve and I'm left with only 10 HP. One more blow and I'll be nothing but a pile of dust. Tears fall down my face as I smile.
'It's been a good run, hasn't it?'
Roman's eyes shift to the side briefly. He lets out a small laugh, "Y'know... A phoenix is nothing without its flame.." A sharpened bone of red magic summons in his hand. His eyes lock back onto me as he lunges forward for the final blow. "Allow me to DEMONSTRATE!"
'Papyrus, Serif, Y/N, Roman... Dream... I'm sorry.'
My hands ball into fists as I accept my fate. There's no getting out of this. Roman is a mere few feet away from me. Suddenly, a familiar figure dropped from the sky, her back and (s/c) wings facing me. My pupils shrink to mere pinpricks and I feel my soul grow cold.
'NO- NOT HER- ANYONE BUT HER-'
"Y/N WAIT!!!!!" I scream. It was too late.
[*99999999999999999999]
"Sorry Sans.. Bros come.. first..." Y/N fell into the grass in front of me. Her wings of flames instantly flicker to nothing. "Y/N!!!!" I scramble to her side, screaming her name as loud as I could. It was futile. Her eyes are lifeless and dull. "No.. nO NO NO No! Y/N! PLEAsE Y/N!" My cries increase as I go to check her soul. Even with my blue magic, nothing is summoned. Her soul is gone. She's gone.
'Y/N is gone, and it's all my fault.'
I wail and scream as loud as my nonexistent lungs will let me.
Roman stands over us. He reaches up to his face and finds the tears pouring from his eyes. He scoffs in disgust at the sight of tears on his fingers. His other hand fists around a fading glow of (s/c) magic. "Forget the skeleton, we have what we need." And with that, he walked away as my screams echoed through the entirety of Waterfall.
