Chapter 16- Family Commitment
(~Honey's POV~)
Y/N never yelled or screamed at me but she certainly hasn't decided to look or talk to me either. All I've been doing is beating myself up over what happened. I messed with the Phoenix and now I'm getting burned hard by her silent treatment.
Dinner never really happened. Normally we'd all hang out in the living room for meal times since my bro and I lack an actual dining area. Although, Y/N and I are the only ones down here. Blue had to rest after using much of his magic and he's the one who normally cooks. I'm pretty sure the twins are with him in his room again. They've been sleeping with him almost every night since they've been here. Besides, they wouldn't want to be around me anyway.
'How long have they been here? Close to making a week now?'
"Here." Y/N approaches me and offers a plate of freshly made tacos. I grab a plate from her and she silently sits with me on the couch. "You made these?" I get no answer from her. She was in the kitchen for a while so I can only assume that she did. I take a bite. After the satisfying crunch, different flavors of spices and ingredients hit my mouth. The spices she used in the meat are phenomenal, but it also has a certain smokiness to it- My bro definitely needs to get her recipe. "You infused this with your fire magic, didn't you?" Y/N doesn't share the same enthusiasm as me.
"Papyrus, w-we n-need to talk." I don't have to ask to know the chosen topic is about earlier. "You never mentioned that the kid had determination." It's suspicious and dangerous. Monster souls can't handle concentrated amounts of DT. From what I could tell in his eyes, which is in direct correlation with his magic, Roman was full of it. "He's n-not supposed to. H-He wasn't born w-with it and hasn't even u-u-used it u-until more recently. I d-don't k-know where it came from." Y/N explains. At least the both of us can agree on him not needing it.
Still, that leaves the other subject. "Look... I'm sorry, Y/N. I didn't mean to hurt him. Can you at least tell me if he's alright?" Y/N grabs at her head, speaking in a softer tone, "A f-few s-scratches on his s-s-spine and skull. B-Blue checked him out a-and s-says it'll be okay but.. Roman d-d-doesn't remember h-half of the battle. H-He d-doesn't k-know what happened." I don't know whether I should be grateful or worried.
'Did he have a concussion? That's actually a common thing for us skeletons when there's nothing really to protect our skull.'
"GoD, my head." Y/N groans. She must be in pain again. I don't know why but my bro did say she has health problems of her own. When we read through her journal last night, there was a period where it mentioned Y/N being involved in an incident. She hasn't opened up about it though and I won't force her to. We've been giving her painkillers for her headaches but it doesn't seem to help much. I suppose monster medicines don't last as long for humans?
"Are you okay?" "T-T-These m-migraines are k-killing m-me." She replies. Y/N then bends over with both hands gripped onto her head. "Have you asked Sans for help? He's a great healer." Y/N interrupts me, frustrated, "It doesn't w-work like that." Y/N randomly deviates from the conversation and gets up while muttering, "What was that kid's name?"
'What kid?'
I arch an eyebrow and watch her pace in circles across the living room. "Y/N, an explanation would be helpful." "Roman claims he g-g-got h-help from a f-friend of Chara's. I-It's h-how we ended up here in t-the first place. F-For the l-l-life of me, I c-can't remember the name. It was so f-familiar but I can't-" She growls mid sentence and suddenly punches the wall closest to her, "DANG IT!"
'WoAH-'
I get up and rush to her side. "Hey, it's alright! Don't hurt yourself! I'm sure it'll come to ya sooner or later." "We don't have t-time, Honey. R-Roman isn't h-h-himself and I-I don't even know w-why! I-I don't know if they d-d-did a-anything to him or his magic. I... I wasn't there for him." There's no doubt that her insecurities quickly take over. She goes quiet and tightly hugs her arms around herself. I want to comfort her so badly. How could she have known? I'm sure she had plenty of other things on her mind at the time. It's easy for something to slip past in that kind of situation. It wasn't even her fault. One of my hands reaches towards her shoulder.
'You shouldn't.'
I hesitate, my hand slowly balling into a fist. I take a deep breath. Without warning, Y/N turns around. I move my hand to my side as quickly as possible. I don't think she noticed it. "Mama?" Y/N and I look to the source at the top of the staircase. "A-Are you fighting?" Serif asks, his body trembling. "Nah kid, far from it. What are ya doing up?" Serif's gloved hands grab tightly into his shirt. "I.. I can't sleep. I never really do."
'Heh, that makes the two of us.'
Y/N sighs, "You c-can c-come down and hang o-out with us for a little while, Babybones." Serif gives us a hesitant look, specifically directed at me. I don't blame him. Though, he does obey his mom's words to come down the stairs. Once he reaches us, he is already clinging onto Y/N's leg. Y/N pats his head, asking him in a gentle way, "Are you hungry?"
Serif nods in response to her. "I'll go f-fix y-you a plate. W-Why don't you h-hang out on the couch w-w-with Papyrus?" "... Okay Mama." Serif avoids making eye contact with me and seats himself on the couch. I put my hands in my pockets and follow his lead. Y/N walks into the kitchen.
'I don't want things to be tense between us. Then again, how do you find common sense with a kid you terrorized? Wait, that's it. His brother.'
"Hey Kiddo. Who's older?" I ask calmly. Serif doesn't understand the question at first. "I'm sorry?" "Between you and your brother. I never asked your mom so I thought I could ask you. Who's older?" He stays quiet for a while. If I could guess, he's probably contemplating whether to even hold a conversation with me or not. Again, I don't blame him.
He answers after a moment, though it's kept short, "I'm older." Being firstborn is quite a special title to hold. Yet, Serif is looking at the floor with a disappointed gaze. I catch onto his thoughts in an instant. "I see.. Heh, kinda hurts when your younger brother has more energy than you, huh?"
(Writer~San: Yep, here comes the friendly reminder~ I already know that Sans is older in canon Underswap but as already explained in New Purpose, Blue is actually the younger brother in my books. Please no judgment! It's just one of my headcanons and how I wish to display it here. Thanks! ;3 )
Serif's body relaxes slightly as he laughs, "You have no idea." I smile and shrug. "Really? You didn't notice the similarities with your uncle and I?" "Yeah but.." The kid cuts himself off. He tucks his hands into his lap and messes with his gloves. "But?" I draw out. "You're both really cool! AND my brother is amazing exactly like you guys but I'm just.. the weak one.. My brother was the one keeping me together for all this time but I'm not strong enough to help him out even once." I'm quite stunned by the words coming out of his mouth.
'When did Y/N find the time to copy and paste another me?'
I place a hand on his shoulder. "I think you're doing your best with the circumstances you got, bud. That doesn't make you weak. You may be twins but no one's expecting you to be a replica of him. Not even your mom. You both have your own strengths and personalities. Speaking of your mom, she was totally bragging about how cool your magic is. That's something special, isn't it?" A small laugh comes from Serif, "You're still trying to find out my secret, aren't you?" "QUiTe DesPeRaTeLy." I say while posing myself in deep despair. This makes him laugh even more.
"Though I know that's off the table for right now so I'll settle for another question instead. Do you know by how long you're older than Roman?" "Five and a half minutes!" He cheers, pumping his fist in victory.
'Ooooh this is gonna be good-'
I gasp, speaking loud and bold manner so that a certain human can hear me, "Wowwww, you mean your mom didn't have you back to back?! WEAK." As I expected, Y/N chimes in, "SAYS THE GUY THAT HAD TO DIE BEFORE THEY WERE BORN!" Serif bursts into hysterical laughter while I accept my fate. "Oh come on, Beautiful! You know I'm just joking around~" Y/N appears in the kitchen doorway. Her arms cross her chest as she leans her hip on the doorway. "Uh huh~ W-Well I-I love you too, Bonehead."
(~Serif's POV~)
Mama claims her win as Dad's eyes disappear. Soon after his face turns completely orange. I feel my soul swell with euphoria. "YOU LOVE EACH OTHER?!" I scream excitedly. Mama quickly covers her mouth to muffle her laughter. Meanwhile, I think Dad is broken. He hasn't moved or breathed at all.
"I don't k-k-know, P-Papyrus~ I don't t-think y-you'd be r-ready for that kind of commitment. I a-already have kids." Mama says teasingly. Dad's pupils return and he suddenly stands up. Mama gets nervous and her face turns all red. Her eyes never leave him.
(~Y/N's POV~)
'What is he doing?!'
Papyrus took one step toward me and then disappeared. Before I could even blink, he's already in front of me. I forgot about his ability to use shortcuts also known as teleportation. His right forearm rests on the doorframe above my head. I feel all of the oxygen leave my lungs. His face is inches from mine as he smiles. "Oh?~ Just watch me, Y/N." He whispers. His left hand reaches my hip and pulls me towards him.
I definitely know where this is going and my soul can't take it. Last time he talked to me with such confidence, I ended up pregnant. My face is burning hotter than my own flame magic. I squeal loudly and shut my eyes, slapping my hands over his stupidly attractive face. Honey chuckles, "I guess I win."
"OH COME ON, MAMA!!!!" Serif shouts in major disappointment.
