The Beginning
Taylor flipped her hair off her shoulders. The day hadn't gotten any cooler, she looked at the thermometer- it was nearing a hundred. She fanned herself with her magazine she had been flipping through.
The fact that tomorrow she had to fly to Montana, didn't make her happy. Emma Reid a girl in Bloomington Montana had been missing for a week and the Greenland Montana PD needed her services. Although she didn't know why, they had her sister Ria on their department. Taylor looked out into the yard of her small house, the grass was great and turning brown from the heat. Her phone rang but she ignored it. When the answering machine picked up she stared at it.
"Hey Tay I called you yesterday and you haven't called me back. I just wanted to see if you were mad at me? Karen called me and said she ran into you at the store and that you mentioned how upset you were after our break up. Tay we talked about it, I know breaking off the engagement was a shock and maybe a little over it at the time, and a lot to take in but Tay it's been five years. We haven't talked in FIVE years. We used to be so close. Any way I know you will get this, just call me back okay? Please.... call me back ASAP!"
Taylor rolled her eyes and through the phone on the floor. When Alex had called her and broke off their engagement it had surprised her and made her furious. She had wasted five years with a complete jerk. Tears stung her eyes and she quickly pushed them back. Alex wasn't going to ruin her night not again. Karen was Alex's fiance and was already engaged to him the week after they broke up.
She picked up her phone and thought about what her best friend had said, "Tay you have to forgive him. If you don't you will never ever be over this or be able to date or live again . Come on Tay, it's one call just ONE, just make it quick just three simple words... I forgive you. It's going to be much harder then it sounds but God will help you he will give you strength to do it."
Lindsay had said that two years ago and those words still haunted her. She dialed Alex's number which was stuck in her brain.
"Hello?" Alex answered on second ring, "Taylor is that you?"
She held her breath and tried to hold back the tears, some sad tears but they were also angry tears.
"Tay is that you? Come on tAlk to me."
"I -Just c-called to say I forgive you."
"Tay can we go out, maybe talk this out over a coffee?"
Did he just ask her to go to coffee at 7pm?
"May be at Council Hill coffee shop?"
Of course... the place where he proposed and took it back. The place where they met and departed, the place where they had their first date and last.
"I can't, I have a plane to catch tonight."
"Oh... that's unfortunate. Well I mean for me not for you, well maybe it is for you too? I don't know."
Taylor rubbed her forehead with her palm, a headache was setting in as it always did when she was stressed.
"It was actually quite the surprise for this job."
"Really?what are you going for?"
"A police job....."
"Oh, uh wow. Thats big and uh kind of surprising."
She hated to hear him say that. Her failure five years ago had her fired from her job evicted from her home her engagement ruined, her life.... broken.
She looked out The window and saw her roommate pulling in. The house was split in half for renters.
"Look Alex I really have to go-"
Her door opened and Chris walked in.
"Hey, is there anyway I can borrow your bush cutter thingy?"
"Who is that? Is that a guy? Are you dating? Married?" Alex frantic question made her panic.
"Yeah Chris it's over there."
"Wait yes your married?" Alex sounded frantic as if he was shocked and scared at the same time.
"Thanks Taylor."
"Alex, I'm not married or in a relationship it's just the neighbor borrowing my clippers."
"What clippers?".
Never mind she didn't have time for this. "Alex I have to go. Bye."
"Wait I'm not done-"
"Bye Alex." And with that she hung up the phone
