My name is Kassey Cassedine Conwell. I am 15 years old and live in a foster home in the town of Baytonwood, Georgia. I’ve been from foster home to foster home since I was 4 years old. I don’t really remember my parents that much and the passing years seems to make me forget more and more. The foster home I’m in now has one other child named Elisabeth. Elisabeth is two years younger than me. She’s been here ever since she was a newborn. She doesn’t know her parents at all. We haven’t been really close since I’ve been here, but they told me I was leaving today and I’ve never been more upset to go to another home. This would be the sixth time I would have to leave.

I stand in my room quickly packing up my clothes. I don’t really own anything, so I only have enough to barely fill a bag. I have a few given pictures of my parents, notebooks, my phone, and some of my favorite foods that I stole from the kitchen. I got my phone from a foster dad I had in the past. Growing up in foster homes, I’ve become accustomed to being able to take things without others noticing. It’s a bad habit, but it helps me function and get the things I need and want.

I closed my bag when I finished packing and slung it over my shoulder. When I walked out of my room, I looked around in the hallway. I heard voices coming from the kitchen. I slowly descended down the stairs, sat near the top, and listened to the conversation.

“She’s leaving very soon and there isn’t anything you can do about it.” The voice sounded like the voice of an older woman.

“You can’t take her! We were planning on adopting her sometime. It’s not fair for her to keep jumping from home to home. She needs stability.” The second voice sounded like my foster mother, Alice.

“Another family has asked for her and since you haven’t signed anything before they asked, we are taking her there. They have a bigger family and I’m sure she will be happy.” The first voice said.

I didn’t hear anything else. There was shuffling behind me and I turned to see Lizzy. She stopped and glared at me with her arms crossed. “What are you doing?”

“None of your business.” I answered casually and turned away from her.

“So, you’re leaving today. I finally get the house to myself.” She pressed.

“Great, Lizzie.” I used the nickname she hates me using. It always unnerved her. I didn’t have to turn to see her smile drop.

      “Kassey?”

I jumped up and ran down the stairs. I was met with two women, Alice and my social worker, Ms. Reynolds. She was taller than Alice and was dressed like she was going to court. She had on a casual, all black suit and dress shoes. Her hair was tied back into a neat ponytail.

“Kassey, Ms. Reynolds will be taking you to your new foster home today.” Alice explained to me. I looked at my foster mother. She didn’t look happy about the arrangement, and from what I heard, she was totally against me leaving.

I didn’t want to leave this house. I haven’t been here long, but I liked Alice. Out of all the other homes I’ve been to, this was the best one by far.

Alice hugged me tightly. “I will always miss you being here. You felt like my daughter. I’m so sorry you have to move again. I was hoping I would be the home for you.”

“It’s alright, Alice. I liked being here. You made things easy for me. I’ll come visit sometime.” I promised.

Alice smiled and kissed my cheek. Alice then stepped back and put her hands behind her back and put her head down. Ms. Reynolds turned to me with a face of almost no emotion.

“Follow me.” She said then walked out the door.

I moved to follow her then paused in the doorway to look back. The room suddenly seemed smaller. I knew I would miss being here. I suddenly didn’t want to leave, but I knew I had to. Gathering my courage, I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
