World Turned Upside Down

Robbie smiled happily as he ran through the streets of Brighton on all fours, relishing his freedom as he looked around him at the houses flying by in a blur.

"Hello!" Robbie shouted as he ran, listening to his voice echo around him through the empty streets.

If he ran fast enough, he could pretend that everything was still normal.

Like nothing was wrong in the world.

When Robbie finally stopped after growing tired, the zombie looked around him at the debris and abandoned cars that peppered the cracked streets, the neighborhood eerily silent as he closed his eyes and stood up.

"Robbie need food, Robbie look." Robbie muttered to himself as his stomach growled loudly, the sound deafening in the silence.

Robbie staggered towards one of the empty houses that looked mostly intact, over the the broken down door and while avoiding the shards of glass surrounding him from the smashed out windows.

"Robbie find food!" Robbie cheered excitedly as he entered the house, looking in the living room to see a rotting corpse of a man that hadn't turned zombie yet lying face down on the floor.

"Living room now dead room." Robbie joked as he kneeled by the body, swatting flies away from it before scooping out some of his internal organs.

The man screamed in pain as Robbie ate, his hazel eyes brimming with tears while the zombie proceeded to not notice.

"Mmmm." Robbie groaned in content, feeling the painful pangs of hunger fade away as he ate.

"Robbie better, Robbie go." Robbie declared as he stood up, leaving the house with blood staining his face and dripping from his hands.

"Food! Need food!"

Robbie turned to find a woman with a bullet wound in her face pointing at him with a crooked finger, her forest green eyes sunken in and long dirty brown hair tangled in knots.

"Food in house, Robbie left some." Robbie stated, gesturing at the house he had just left with a friendly smile.

The woman merely grunted in reply as she limped towards the house, one of her legs bent at an odd angle.

Robbie watched her enter before leaving to wander more, the zombie pausing when he caught a glimpse of his reflection on a broken piece of glass lying on the ground.

The zombie's short lavender hair was covered in dirt and grease, his pale sky blue eyes lifeless and his almost translucent face stained with crimson blood.

His black and white striped shirt was torn in various places to reveal bruised and rotting skin, his feet bare and his black pants covered in several stains that Robbie couldn't identify.

"Robbie sleep, Robbie tired." Robbie mumbled as he trudged off to return to his home, the zombie freezing when he heard voices in the distance.

"Robbie hide." Robbie whimpered fearfully, crawling underneath one of the cars and holding his breath as the voices grew louder, several pairs of feet visible standing next to his hiding spot.

"...never thought the zombie apocalypse would actually ever happen."

"I know, but right now we need to focus on finding supplies to bring back to camp."

Robbie flinched as one of the humans dropped something by him, the human bending down to pick it up before noticing Robbie and freezing with a terrified expression while the zombie closed his eyes.

"Hey, anyone else see anything under that car? I could've swore I saw a pair of blue eyes staring at me."

Robbie breathed in sharply as he scrambled out of his hiding spot, unsure of what to do as three humans aimed guns at him with the intent to kill.

"Robbie find food, food in house there!" Robbie blurted as he pointed at the house he had been in earlier, the humans exchanging wary looks.

"He can actually talk?" One of the humans breathed in surprise, the man lowering his gun slightly as he took a tentative step forward.

"Robbie no want hurt." Robbie whined as he shrank back, hugging his arms close to his chest.

"You're okay bud, you're okay." The male assured him, his hand extended towards Robbie with a small smile.

Robbie staggered back as a wave of memories overwhelmed him, images of people that looked similar to him flashing through what was left of his brain.

A man with a black tattoo in his arm.

A man with a blue vest and black bowler hat.

A man with a lab coat.

A man with a scar on his neck.

A man with a cat mask.

A man with a red jumpsuit.

A man with a bottle of whiskey in one hand, the other extended towards Robbie with a comforting smile.

"The hell's wrong with him?" One of the other humans chimed in with a frown, their finger hovering over the trigger.

"Robbie fine, Robbie no want hurt." Robbie protested, pressing a hand to the side of his head as it throbbed in pain.

"Whatever, lets just shoot him and go." The third human interjected, firing at Robbie before the zombie could react.

Robbie grunted as the bullet embedded into his chest before he began running as fast as his legs could carry him, footsteps pounding after him to the beat of his own.

"You're okay bud, you're okay."

The somehow familiar words repeated in Robbie's head like a broken record as gunshots rang out behind him, one shot hitting his leg before he darted behind a building and hopped into a dumpster.

"Robbie smell like trash." Robbie grimaced as the scent of ruined food filled his nose, making his stomach churn.

"Damnit, where'd it go?!"

"Doesn't matter, lets just leave it and continue looking for supplies."

Robbie relaxed as the gunfire ceased and the voices became quieter, the zombie cautiously poking his head out of the trash before climbing out.

"Robbie go home." Robbie mumbled as he brushed what trash he could off of him while limping off to safety.

"Robbie safe." Robbie sighed in relief as he returned to the empty house he called home, feeling a connection to it although he couldn't remember why.

Robbie curled up on the couch in the living room and closed his eyes, the memory of the humans shooting at him haunting him as he fell asleep.
