Chapter 17

The voices haunted my thoughts as I woke early the next morning and got dressed, made worse by their ringleader- a voice I never expected to hear again: Dan. Chills ran down my spine as I headed for the graveyard, making a beeline for a familiar gravesite. The knife I had tucked in my boot rubbed against my skin, a threatening reminder of my task.

I was suprised to see that the rose I had left my previous visit had been joined by a white one. A hand suddenly touched my shoulder, making me jump. Without even turning around, I knew who it was. "Just leave me alone, Zach," I said wearily.

Indeed, as I turned around, I met familiar grey eyes. He shook his head, a remorseful expression on his face and stepped closer to me. To my horror, the whispers grew louder. I couldn't stop the whimper that escaped my lips. The closer he got, the louder the whispers became. He put his hand on my shoulder, his face the portrait of concern. My eyes were clenched tight, my hands in fists at my side.

I knew what I had to do, I just didn't know if I could do it. A heartbeat later, I had my answer. Whirling around, I swiped the knife from my shoe, eyes trained on his chest. A sharp intake of breath was all Zach managed as the knife hit home. Blood coated my hands, but I barely felt it. I was too busy waiting- and then it happened. Like someone had flipped a switch, the voices halted.

Relief, anger, sadness, grief: all of them hit me like a brick wall as I let go of the knife and fell to my knees. If it wasn't for the wetness on my cheeks, I probably wouldn't have noticed I was crying. A numbness settled over me as I felt someone's hands on my shoulders, lifting me up.

I felt strong hands grip me, keeping me upright. I felt a featherlight kiss on my forehead, followed by a familiar voice. "It's over, Bella. You did it." Adrian. A sob broke from my throat, followed by several more. The walk home was a blur- all I remembered was walking into my room and getting into bed. Adrian slid in beside me, putting an arm around me. I laid my head on his chest, my breath hitching.

"It's over," Adrian whispered. I had a feeling he'd said that more than once on the walk home. As we laid there, I suddenly sat up, clutching my pendant. Fresh tears ran down my face as a familiar figure appeared in front of me. Her smile was sad, but I could sense a glimmer of pride in her mood.

"You did it, Bella. I'm so proud of you. You've become such a strong, beautiful, independent young woman." A broken sob escaped me as I stared at my mom- a woman who'd had the odds stacked against her, and still prevailed. In the moments following Zach's death, I'd noticed a humming noise coming from the pendant. Hope had filled me as I'd clutched it- and cried out in joy as my mom's bright and vibrant figure had appeared in front of me.

Tears had filled her eyes as she'd seen me, quickly spilling down her cheeks as Dad came to my side. His own eyes were shining with tears as they'd gazed at one another. I'd struggled to keep the tears from falling at the heartbroken look on Dad's face.

"Dani," he'd whispered. An ashamed look quickly replaced the heartbreak as he struggled to get the words out. "I know who killed Sarah. It was Griffin Kelly."

A gasp had been Mom's only response. She'd turned to me, a sad smile on her face. "My girl," she whispered. A fresh wave of tears had begun as I'd heard her voice. Adrian put a hand on my shoulder now, jolting me out of my thoughts. My eyes widened as I saw what he held: a diamond wedding ring.

He was already smiling. "Isabella Gemma Harrison, you are the light of my life. We've only known each other a few months, but it's felt like a lifetime. I can't imagine my life without you. Will you marry me?"

I heard a door open and footsteps as Dad appeared, his eyes shining with tears. I turned back to Adrian, a smile appearing on my face. "Yes," I replied, laughing. He slipped the ring on my finger then kissed me. We'd heard nothing from Tara since Zach's death- not that we'd expected to. I never realised how hard forgiveness really was. Forgetting a situation is easy; forgiving it is a lot harder.
