Avi was in his father's cabin, trying to focus on the Annual report of the accounts when his phone pinged with notifications. He knew what the messages could possibly read but he was not ready for that. He was not ready to hear her talk about the person she loves. That would be his complete destruction.

His father was eyeing him from his chair looking distracted and not in his element. Usually, whenever Avi visited, he was an enthusiastic chaos running from one department to the other, asking questions that ranged on a scale of one to ten, one being as silly as why don't the bank just print their own money whenever they want more and ten being as intelligent as why is their Lucknow store in loss when he knows it's thriving and how. That question led the team in doubt and little audit had gotten the Lucknow branch head in trouble for stealing from the company.

Today, though, it was different. He had been silently sitting on the couch in his father's cabin for more than two hours now without moving, silently reading the file but his father knew something was very wrong with him. He also knew his son would tell him when it would get too difficult for him to handle it on his own. All he could do was to wait for it to either get better or worse (hopefully the former).

Vrishti was out of nowhere reminded of the conversation from the initial days of their friendship and something felt broken. She wasn't going to accept it but Avi made her feel special. The way he was always there for her came to mean something more than she had hoped it to be. But she tried to curb those thoughts. They were not allowed to wander in the lanes that she had no business knowing details about. She wasn't going there anyway.

When the constant notification kept on distracting him, he pulled out the phone from his Jean pocket and closed his eyes, in anticipation, before taking a look at the messages and in no time there were myriad of emotions lined up on his face. It started with utmost happiness to confusion and ended up at stress. His lie was coming to bite him it looked like. He ruffled his hair with his left hand before bringing it to hold his phone as he typed with his right.

A fictional man? Seriously? You got me all choked up for nothing?

And for that matter
I wasn't dating anyone

But don't get me wrong

The notifications kept coming as Vrishti went to stand in the balcony. The sky was painted with shades of pink, orange and purple. The sun was about to set. She heaved a deep sigh as she looked at the setting sun. Another day was coming to an end. Delhi had started to feel the approaching winter or so she thought and went inside to avoid getting cold. That would knock her worse.

She sat on her bed and picked up the phone only to be amused by a certain someone. And then her eyebrows twitched. He lied to her?! Then she was fuming. He shouldn't have lied. That wasn't done.

Wow you lied to me?
How should I trust you now!
How do I know anything you said was right or wrong?
How do I even know you are Avi?
For all I know you can be an identity thief.
I shouldn't have believed you honestly. Avi could never be this sweet and friendly.

No! That was the only lie I told you

Vrishti wasn't someone to let anyone get off the hook so quickly but a lot had shifted in her and on top of that it was Avi. Her heart felt okay being a little bit lenient with him.

Do sit ups then holding your ears. 10 times. And gimme a video proof of it.

Give me 5 minutes.

Avi quickly opened the camera of his phone and set it on video mode and reached out to his father to hold it for him as he completed his punishment.

"Dad, just hold it for me and see if it captures everything properly." He said. His tone was that of urgency. His father didn't know what had got him so suddenly but he asked no questions. He would ask them later. Right now he had to help him in whatever he was doing.

It took him no time to hold his ears and do sit ups. He didn't even break a sweat. Regular gym had him fit despite his lean body with right amount of muscles. His father was surprised. It didn't take him much time to figure out it was about a girl. And his son was down bad. Avi took the phone from him and sent the video file to her without going over the limit of five minutes he had asked for.

Vrishti looked at the video with wide eyes. The background looked that of an office which meant he was in his father's office.

Are you at your father's office?

Are you really so stupid
Tell me you cheat in exams right? How are you the topper with that stupid brain of yours?

And I'm not embarrassed about it. I was genuinely wrong when I did what I did and I deserved that.
