+Chapter Six+
"So, what's the story with the pretty brunette who's been living in your house but you neglected to tell me about?" Cris questioned.
I scowled. Of course Ro was the first thing she brought up. "She's a girl who lost her memory, and is living in my house for the time being. She's one of my dad's patients. End of story."
"So. . . you have a beautiful girl living in your house, and you don't care at all? Sorry, but who are you, and what have you done with the real Ket?" she gasped mockingly.
"Shut up, Cris," I muttered.
"Shut up, Cris?" she repeated thoughtfully. "That's a weird name."
"Shut up, Cris," I said again.
She let out a chuckle, followed by a small sigh. "Seriously though, I don't think there's anything wrong with her. She seems nice and all, and I was jealous of how well she rocked that cute little dress your mom let her borrow-"
"Wait, Ro has a little dress on and no one informed me? Like. . . how little? As in, there is a lot of leg showing?" Jose questioned, wiggling his eyebrows.
"Firstly, I'm not even going to answer that, you idiot-" she started.
"I told you that you were an idiot," I interjected.
"And secondly," Cris continued as if I hadn't spoken. "It doesn't matter what she looks like, because it's not like she's even here."
"What do you mean she's not here?" I questioned.
"I don't know, she was just leaving when I got here. I heard her say something to Kendra about an Officer Mills. I assume she meant the guy who pulled into the driveway a couple minutes after I did," Cris shrugged. "Looked a bit young to be a cop to me, though. He was hot."
My scowl deepened. Braum.
"Anyways," Cris sighed again. "Like I said, she seems really nice, and she's obviously pretty, so I don't think that your problem is with her. I think that you're probably just jealous because as your father's patient, she probably gets to spend more time with him than you do. You should really cut her some slack though. Didn't you just say that she lost her memory? That must be tough for her. I can't even imagine how scared I would be if I were in her place. The poor girl. . ."
"Yeah, we already went through all of this with Ro earlier. Honestly, I think he's more pissed off at the fact that she was actually brave enough to stand up to him than he is at the fact that she gets to spend more time with his dad than he does at this point," Jose shrugged.
"Would you two stop analyzing me like psychologists?" I snapped.
Cris fell back onto my bed beside Jose. "What exactly do you mean by 'stood up to him'?"
Jose grinned as well. "She called him a bastard and a daddy's boy, and told him to stop taking out his anger issues on her."
Cris let out a laugh. "Okay, I officially approve of this girl. Seriously Ket, get off your high horse. It sounds to me like you really have no legitimate reason to hate this girl. If you're going to be living under the same roof, you should at least try being friends with her. You know, put yourself in her shoes and all that."
Jose nodded in agreement. I narrowed my eyes at him. To anyone who didn't know him, he would look completely relaxed as he lay back on my bed beside Cris, but he wasn't fooling me. His body was turned slightly towards her, and he even looked like he was blushing slightly. He liked her. He'd liked her for a while, even though he wouldn't admit it. He would basically agree to anything she said.
"Can we talk about something other than Ro now?" I asked.
Jose was thoughtful for a moment.
"School starts in three weeks," he pointed out.
"Thanks, Captain Obvious," I muttered.
Jose rolled his eyes at me. "My point is, summer is almost over, so we need to start planning our Back-to-School Bash."
For the first time since this conversation had started, a grin broke out on my face.
"You're right," I nodded. "I think I have an idea."
*-*-*
"I can't believe they haven't called us back yet," my dad growled.
I sighed as he picked up the phone.
"I'm calling them back," he informed my mom and I. "We've waited much longer than I'd said we would. I told them we would call back last night."
I shook my head slightly before standing up and making my way towards the small kitchen in the room, dragging my oxygen cart behind me. I scowled down at the thing as I made my way up to the fridge. My oxygen cart was clunky and annoying and I wished I could just toss it out the hotel window.
I grabbed a bottle of orange juice from the fridge before making my way towards the living room once more. I absentmindedly rubbed my hand against my chest, trying to get a good breath in. Something felt tight and uncomfortable. I tried adjusting the nubs in my nose as well. The tightness only increased.
"What do you mean 'you went to Tam's house to check on them, but no one was there so you left'? Don't you understand that my daughter and sister-in- law are missing?" my dad was now yelling.
There was a pause as he listened to the response. His eyebrows furrowed even more.
"I have to wait 48 hours to report them missing? Are you kidding me? They could have gone missing right after my wife, son and I left! That was three days ago. why can't I just report them missing now?" he asked, trying to keep from yelling, but not exactly succeeding.
I tried taking another breath in and a sharp pain shot through my chest.
"I have to wait 48 hours after realizing that they're missing? Great. Wonderful. Fine, I will be calling back tomorrow to be making that report then, and you'd better hope that nothing happened to my little girl before-"
I didn't hear the rest though, because as I tried to take another breath, I realized that I couldn't. The next thing I knew, I was face down on the carpeted floor of the hotel room.
"Reed?" my mom cried.
Everything faded to black.

Was going to be longer, but I'm tired and it's late, and my first exam is on Friday so... yeah :P
