+Chapter Nine+

I stared out the window at the sun as it got higher sky. We had been in the hospital since yesterday, but I hadn't slept at all during the night. The waiting room chair that I was sitting on was hard and uncomfortable, and all I wanted was to leap from it, and go storming into the operating room to be with my little boy.

"Mr. and Mrs. Gessman?" a man dressed in blue scrubs called out.

My head shot up and my hand immediately reached for my husbands.

"That's us," Steve replied, standing up.

The man smiled at us. "Your son is out of surgery, if you would like to come see him."

We both nodded vigorously, wanting nothing more than to just see that Reed was alright.

"He is currently in the ICU, but once he is stable and we're sure that everything seems to be in order, he will be transferred to the Transplant Unit," the man smiled at us. "As you know from the discussion we had earlier, recovery time will be about three to six months."

I nodded numbly. I honestly just wanted this man to shut up and show me my son.

He led us into the ICU and toward a bed with a passed out teenage boy on it. There were multiple machines surrounding the bed and he had a large breathing tube hooked up to his nose.

"Reed," I whispered, rushing over to him, but being careful not to touch him just in case.

One of his eyes slowly opened.

"Hey, Mom," he croaked, flashing me a lazy smile. "Guess what? They gave me control over my drug intake! I feel great!"

He held up his hand slightly to show me the button he held in it. It was a pain pump.

"Great," Steve muttered. "He's high on pain medication."

"Yeah," Reed sighed in content.

"Oh, Reed," I sighed, carefully taking a seat on the edge of his bed.

"You know the only thing that would make this better?" Reed questioned, shutting both his eyes again.

I could tell that he was starting to drift off again. The doctors had said this would happen because of the anesthesia.

"What?" I smiled down at him.

"If Ro were here. Where's Ro? I miss her. . ." he trailed off.

My eyes widened and I felt my breath catch in my throat.

"Oh my god," I choked. "Steve, we forgot to call the police! I was just so wrapped up in worrying about Reed. . . I can't believe we forgot! Steve we have to go call them right now! Oh god. . ."

Steve was looking at me with wide eyes. Obviously he couldn't believe it either. We had forgotten to report our daughter and my sister missing.

Steve pulled his cell phone out of his pocket, already making his way out of the room, because it wasn't allowed to be used in the hospital. "I'm calling right now."

I sighed and looked down at my coma patient.

"We have an I.D."

I nearly jumped as I turned to see Mary standing in the doorway. I hadn't even noticed her come in. After taking a deep breath to calm my racing heart, I continued checking the patients vitals.

"Well, who is she then?" I questioned.

"Her name is Tamara Gessman," Mary informed me.

I nodded. "Alright. Well, at least now we have a name. Hello, Tam."

"So, tomorrow is the Back-to-School Bash event that Jose, Cris and I run every year. You should come."

I looked up from my breakfast, feeling confused. It was technically a litle late for breakfast, seeing as it was eleven thirty in the morning, but it didn't matter. I quickly glanced around the kitchen to see if there was someone else in there.

Ket rolled his eyes at me.

"I'm talking to you, you idiot," he said, taking a bite of his cereal.

"I thought you hated me though?" I pointed out, still feeling confused. "And I thought that Jose was the idiot."

"Firstly, it's possible for there to be more than one idiot in the world- actually, I can assure you that there's more than one idiot in the world- and secondly, maybe I'm actually trying to be nice. Isn't that what you wanted?" he smirked.

I frowned. "Well, it was what I wanted, but I'm finding that you somehow even manage to make being 'nice' annoying."

"Look," Ket sighed.

"Do you want to come, or not?" I shrugged.

"I guess so, but what are we even going to do for this Back-to-School event?"

Ket's smirk grew wider. "Go Karting."

I nearly choked on my cereal.

"Wait, what? Isn't Go Karting kind of dangerous, though? What if we crash? We could get hurt if we crash."

Ket looked at me as if I were stupid.

"Don't crash then."I gave him a flat look.

"Oh, of course! Why didn't I think of that?"

"Well, like I said, there seems to be an abundance of idiots in this world. . ." Ket grinned cheekily.

I flicked a piece of cereal at him. "Shut up, Blanket."

Ket's smile immediately disappeared. "How do you know about that?"

Now it was my turn to grin. "I have my ways."

Before Ket had the chance to reply, the phone started ringing. He walked over to the cradle and picked it up.

"Hello?" he answered, listening for a moment before making a face. "It's for you. It's your boyfriend."

I glared at him as I took the phone. "Hello?"

"Hey, it's Braum," the person on the other end of the line replied.

"Hey Braum," I smiled.

"Gag me with a pitchfork," Ket muttered.

"I have some good news and bad news," Braum began.

My smiled faltered slightly. "Alright, give me the bad news first."

"Actually, the bad news won't really make sense unless I give you the good news," Braum replied.

"Fine then. Give me the good news," I insisted.

"We found your family," Braum announced.

My breath caught in my throat. "Wait, are you serious?"

"Yeah," Braum agreed, and I could tell he was grinning. "They reported you missing early this morning and the description they gave matches perfectly. They faxed over all of your legal documents as well. It's really them this time. By the way, in case you wanted to know, your full name is Rolland Elizabeth Gessman."

I couldn't tell if I was breathing or not. I didn't think I was.

"As for the bad news. . . Unfortunately, although it's exciting that we finally found your family, there are a few complications. Firstly, it appears that your parents and your twin brother, Reed, are currently in San Antonio, Texas. Secondly, it appears that the aunt you were supposed to be staying with is also missing."

"I- I," I stuttered, I didn't even know what to ask first. "San Antonio? Missing?"

Ket was giving me a confused look from his spot on the other side of the island.

"Yeah," Braum sighed. "I'm sorry to tell you this, Ro. Apparently your brother is in the hospital down there because he just had a lung transplant. Your parents say that he's recovery well, though, if that makes you feel any better. As for your aunt, we currently don't have many leads. We have guys searching local hospitals as we speak."

I nodded, completely at a loss for words.

"You realize that you're on the phone and he won't be able to see you nod, right?" Ket questioned.

I made a face before clearing my throat. "S-so, my twin brother- my twin brother- is in a hospital in San Antonio and my aunt is missing? Wonderful. . ."

"Sorry, Ro. I know that this is a lot to take in," Braum said worriedly. "On the bright side, your parents want to talk to you! I told them that maybe you guys could set up a video call. What do you think?"

"Of course! I would love to!" I exclaimed.

"Alright, great! Do you want to head over to the station, then? There are still some things that I need to discuss with both you and your parents, so I figured it would be easier if we did the call here," Braum explained.

"Okay, that makes sense," I agreed.

"Perfect. Do you need a ride here?"

I rolled my lip into my mouth and glanced up at Ket.

"Do I need a ride to the station?" I repeated.

Ket just stared at me for a second, clearly going through some sort of internal debate."I can drive you," he finally sighed, shrugging.

I gave him a smile. "No, I'm good. I'll see you soon, Braum."
