+Chapter Eleven+
"Dr. Lemmings?" I asked.
She turned to me with a smile. "Yes?"
"I wanted to ask you about whether or not you could possibly come to work with an amnesia patient of mine," I explained.
*-*-*
"So, I changed the sheets and already put all of your clothes into the closet," my mom smiled to Ro. "Now, the biggest thing we have to worry about is enrolling you in school before the year starts."
Ro's eyes widened and I felt mine mirror hers.
"I didn't even think of that," she muttered.
"Luckily, I did. If you're going to be staying here for a while, we need to enroll you in school. It starts in a few weeks," my mom reminded us.
"Don't remind me," I groaned.
Ro let out a deep breath. "So a new school, huh? Okay. . ."
My mom gave her a warm smile. "You'll be fine. You're nice, and smart, and so pretty! Besides, you'll already know Cris, Josey and Ket!"
Ro now began smiling. "True. Cris and I get along really well. What about class, though? What if I can't remember anything and I completely fail?"
I made a face. It was weird to think that she was friends with my best friend. I leaned back into the couch, resting my elbow on the arm rest.
"I already discussed that with Jarod. We checked with the school, and they told us that they can provide a test for you to do before the beginning of the year so that we can see what grade level we should put you in at. Seeing as you only seem to have lost your Episodic Memory, though, you'll probably just be starting in at the same grade level any normal seventeen year old would."
Ro nodded.
"By the way, does that mean that her family told us how old Ro is? When's her birthday?" I questioned.
My mom smiled. "Yep. Ro is seventeen and she was born on September twenty third."
"Oh, cool," I said.
Ro just nodded again.
"Oh, I should go check on lunch. I'll be back in a minute," my mom said, jumping up from the couch.
I turned my attention back to the T.V. I wasn't even really sure what I was watching because I hadn't been paying any attention to it up until now. There was a guy with a role of duck tape and a hammer standing on screen. Well, this looked promising. . .
I glanced over at Ro who was sitting on the other side of the couch. She was staring down at her lap, fiddling with her thumbs. I could tell that she wasn't paying any attention to the T.V. either, but I had no idea what she was thinking. It bugged me because I usually found people easy to read, their body language would always give everything away. It was different with her, though. I wondered if the reason I couldn't read her was because she had lost her memory and so everything about her was now a mystery.
"Should I feel bad that I can't remember my aunt at all? I mean, I was probably the last one who saw her, and now she's missing. If I remembered her, I could help find her, but I don't. . ." Ro said suddenly.
I frowned. "It's not your fault that you can't remember. Besides, the police force here is amazing. I mean, look how quickly you were reunited with your family- well, kind of."
"I just feel awful," Ro whispered. "I can't remember any of them. Not really. I thought. . . I thought that once I saw them, my memory would just come back. It didn't though. I can't remember anything about them. I have a twin brother, and I don't remember growing up with him. I can't conjure up any memories that I might have shared with him- birthdays, first day of school, whatever inside jokes or secret languages we may have had. It hurts them to know that I can't remember anything about them, and I know that, and yet it's still all a blank. I can't remember no matter how hard I try. I'm a terrible person."
I shook my head at her, almost laughing at how ridiculous that was. "How are you a terrible person? It's not like you went out and purposefully lost your memory just to spite them. You're trying your best to remember them, and that's all that they can ask of you. They love you, Ro. Besides, I think that you subconsciously remember more than you think."
"What do you mean?" she questioned, her eyebrows scrunching together.
"Well, look at who you first became friends with," I laughed. "Officer Mills. Tall, brown hair, sturdy, protective. He even kind of looks like your brother. Some part of you deep down inside was scared and wanted nothing more than to be with your brother, the one who protects you. When he wasn't around, you went for the next best thing."
Her eyes widened a fraction and she rolled her lip into her mouth. I stared at it for a moment, completely distracted. I hated it when she did that.
"You're right," she agreed. "I can't believe I didn't see it until now. I'm glad that I did, though, because I ended up making a good friend."
I wrinkled my nose. "How cute."
She rolled her eyes at me. "I was wondering how long you being sincere was going to last."
I shrugged. "You should feel honored that I spent the amount of time that I did on it."
"What? Two minutes? Oh yes, I feel so honored," she retorted.
"Good," I smirked. "Don't get used to it."
She rolled her eyes again, but she was now grinning. Perfect.
"Guys, I'm home!" my dad called out from the front hall. "And I brought a friend."
I made a face and turned to look over the back of the couch. My dad walked into the kitchen, greeting my mom with a smile and a kiss.
"Honey, this is Dr. Lemmings. I brought her here to work with Ro on her memory," my dad explained.
I felt my stomach clench slightly. Of course the guest he had brought was for Ro. I tried my best not to be mad at her, or start glaring at the side of her head. After the conversation we had just had, I knew how important getting her memory back was to her, but that didn't mean it didn't hurt. I sighed and turned away from the kitchen and back towards the T.V. I could feel Ro's gaze on me.
"Hey Ro," my dad now greeted her.
Ro turned her gaze away from me to look at him, a smile on her face.
"So, this is Dr. Lemmings, and she is going to work on memory recovery with you. How does that sound?" he asked her.
He sounded like such a doctor when he spoke that way.
"It sounds great!" Ro agreed. "Why don't Dr. Lemmings and I go work at the island in the kitchen and you can take my spot and keep Ket company."
I raised my eyebrows and looked over at her sharply. I didn't want my dad to 'keep me company'.
"I-" I started.
"Sounds like a great plan," my dad cut me off.
Ro grinned at him before getting up. Before heading into the kitchen, she shot me a look. I just frowned at her.
"So," my dad started, slowly taking a seat beside me. "I have some exciting news."
"Let me guess, you picked up more shifts at the hospital, because working from eight at night til twelve the next day wasn't enough for you?" I snapped.
"Actually," he sighed, obviously picking up on my mood. "I was offered a different shift, one where I could work relatively normal hours during the day, and then come home for dinner and sleep at night."
"I- wait, what? You did?" I asked slowly.
"Yeah. I know I have exactly been around a lot lately, and I've been paying more attention to Ro, than you, even though you're my son, but I promise you that that is all going to change," he promised.
"Oh, cool," I nodded.
I couldn't help but smile though. I was going to have to thank Ro later.
"So, what are your plans for the last few weeks of summer?" my dad asked.
I quirked my mouth up on one side. He was trying.
"Well," I started. "the Back-to-School Bash is tomorrow. . ."
